I’m thinking if all of the grads on this forum had

gone through rat season like some of us maturer folks, then there would be less dissension and outright name calling to those with a differing stance on things. Rat season made us all the same, all with separate backgrounds, but with a unity and devotion to Dear Ole Clemson. Go Tigers.

Dug, as my dear old dad long passed used to explain to us was back in them days you went off to college with nothing and usually without friends. You didn't have phones or no way to keep up with your HS click etc.
So you went with just your assigned roomie. However, tradition said upper classmates, not frats or anything like that, just upper classman made you shave your head after the first football game... And I can't remember but I think you had to wear something on your head. Anyway they could make you do stuff, stay in line type thing, follow rules... Again, not like hazing with frats or anything, more just behave like a Clemson man.
If you messed up, missed class or whatever, you'd have to either paint your head or get it partially shaved again... So you were recognized. It ran through football until the coot game. It gets fuzzy here but it was something like guarding the campus or the gameball etc b4 coot game all night long.
Then, again it gets fuzzy but I think if Clemson won, you could wear your hair how you wanted, but if Clemson lost, you'd have to wear it shaved with the paint or hat?? The rest of the year. I'm sure I butchered it somewhere along the way.
Dad's been dead for 22 years and I vaguely remember the details when he and Mr David Smith would talk about on the drive up from Columbia to the games... But my brother and I were little pups in the backseat so I only remember certain details
Please get some of the older generation to talk more about. In fact an interview with joe21 from D Hood would be a good story. He could get all the facts correct and probably have some great stories.
Since I'm an outsider, perhaps some of the influence on the bored could request it. The one lesson I do remember from it was it taught Clemson blood relationship for life as well as ultimate respect for the other man. Kinda like 50's 60's style Dabo . hth.

Thank you for the insight. Put it on your shoes... I'm going to remember that one. I could employ that today.

Well played. I'm with you all the way brother. I come from an era long past too. A Brotherhood of Dear ole Clemson. Rest assured, we go in the foxhole together, we're coming out together.
Tnet, much like many social media forums, it's a "click". You're branded an outsider no matter how much knowledge you may have, if it's a dissenting view from the pack.

You do realize that it went BOTH ways. Rats that got abused made sure everyone knew who did it, and the game was on. What goes around, comes around. Revenge is best served cold (or in some cases, well shaken, etc).

I still have my Rat Hat.
I might wear that thing to some ball games this year jes fer fun.
One thing I found out during Rat Season. I look a whole lot better with hair than with a shaved head.

Thank you all for the insight. Kinda regret I didn't get to experience something like that. Being a commute student in mid-late 70's you really missed the whole college experience.

The "Rat System" was left over from the Military days.
When the Wimmens came to campus, things changed.
