NCAA could have a simple fix to paying athletes.

Apr 30, 2020, 8:54 PM

I'm about to give my opinion, which I've had for 30+ years. It will never happen. And, y'all feel free to blast me for it. (I'm a Nole. I expect to be blasted occasionally.) But, if the NCAA were serious about being STUDENT-athletes they could pass one simple rule that would go a long way toward solving the encroachment of professionalism in the college ranks.

Here is the rule: When an athlete signs an LOI that scholarship counts against the limit the NCAA allows for either six years or until the athlete graduates.

Would Coach K have recruited Zion if he knew he would lose a scholarship for the next five years?

The NCAA would have to change their philosophy completely. The philosophy would be "The purpose of an athletic scholarship would be to provide the student an opportunity to earn a college degree." As of today, the purpose is to win as many games as possible while letting the kid earn a college degree if he wants to. But, if he doesn't want to, no big deal.

Point taken. I think that scenario does affect a school’s APR which has some significance.

APR is a joke.

The last year Jimbo Fisher was at FSU, when he quit in September but kept "coaching" until he announced he was going to aTm, he basically turned the kids loose as far as class attendance. Our APR was pathetic. But, it still met the minimum requirements for the NCAA. I am certain no Power Five school has ever been penalized for APR. I don't think any G5 team has either.

APR is just a publicity game the NCAA uses so they can claim they care about academics.

In today’s world this makes way too much sense for any of these clowns who make the rules to consider .......but I totally agree with you......Go Tigers!!!!!

I’m sure the NCAA will control the money

And distribute to the players just like they do the royalties from apparel sales to the colleges.

put the money in a savings account and when they

graduate they get the money. I like Dabo's idea.

You are absolutely correct it will never happen. As long as there is big money in any profession, the professionals will try to maximize their profit. Usually to the detriment of everything else.

That is an option but here is what I would do instead...

- Athletes cannot enter into Agent contracts or sign NIL agreements until their sophomore year of college. I believe this would help remove some of the NIL shenanigans that are bound to corrupt the recruiting process and will allow Freshmen to focus on adjusting to college academics/college life.

- All money received from an athletes NIL will go into an individual interest bearing escrow account that is established/managed by the NCAA.

- Money accumulated in the escrow account is not payable to the athlete until they leave college or their athletic eligibility runs out.

- In the event of an emergency while in college, athletes can petition the NCAA for early receipt of funds from their escrow account prior to departing college (e.g. family emergency).

This whole NIL is a mess and what the NCAA should have done several years ago was establish a profit sharing compensation program for athletes. The program could have been funded by the NCAA by taking 10% of the NCAA's bowl season profits and giving those funds to the athletes. Every athlete from every FBS team would be paid the exact same amount regardless of their position. This would have kept every program on equal footing instead of the free for all that is going to happen with the NIL. Here is how it could have worked:

- The moment an athlete enters college, the NCAA creates/manages an escrow account for that individual athlete.

- Every year, funds from the NCAA's profits are divided up equally and put into the athletes individual account. The longer an athlete stays in college, the more money they accumulate.

- Upon graduation, departing college, or their eligibility runs out, an athlete will receive the full sum of the funds accumulated in their escrow account.

- In the event of an emergency while in college, athletes can petition the NCAA for early receipt of funds from their escrow account prior to departing college (e.g. family emergency).

If the NCAA had not been so greedy and stupid, they could have instituted a profit sharing scheme with the athletes that would have given them standing to keep the politicians out of it. As it is now, some players will be getting paid while others will not. Just wait - this athlete "inequality" will become an issue that politicians act on sometime in the future.

Geez. Kentucky could only field a team once every 6 years.***
