I’m still struggling to understand

Jan 13, 2022, 7:38 PM

How a coach who took a perennial tournament team, playing in one of the best atmospheres in all of college basketball tore our program down to:

A 20% decrease in attendance over the last 3 Purnell years with the last non-COVID Brownlee year

Going from making the tournament every year to 3 out of 12 years. And really 2 out of 11 years if you don’t count the year with Purnell’s players.

Going from making a conference championship game at the height of the ACC to being average at its weakest point ever.

It’s almost like some of us don’t believe we deserve better, even though we had it.

That’s what happens when you

flip the inside of the arena sideways and leave the outside alone

Artificially lowering expectations in order to slightly exceed them.

O-MY calamity, by golly, I guess this year is a rebuilding year. Yay, we exceeded all expectations and made it to the first round of the tournament. Don’t you dare think that success could build into something better next year because by golly our young players transferred and we have to start over.

You're right, things were so great with our basketball

program when Purnell was here, so he abruptly left without giving his boss a chance to keep him and didn't even tell his players he was leaving.

If it was such a great situation, why would he leave?

Not only did he leave, he left for DePaul! LOL!

And we had trouble finding a coach who wanted to take the job.

Maybe, just maybe, it wasn't as great then as your revisionist history makes it out to be.

"Everybody needs to know that Coach Brownell is arguably the best coach to come through Clemson." -PJ Hall

It was fun. Nothing “revisionist” about that.***

we've made the dance 13 times

Jan 14, 2022, 1:11 PM

In the 4 years that we went in a row, our tourney record was 1-4.

Brownell got to the Sweet 16 and came #### close to taking down the #1 seed. Parnell didn't get close to that.

How’s he do his other 11 years?

Jan 14, 2022, 1:14 PM

And how long should we have to drag him along because of one magical finish to a season?

Purnell could get his teams to the Dance, but with the way

Jan 14, 2022, 5:57 PM [ in reply to we've made the dance 13 times ]

he made them play defense, we were usually flat physically exhausted come Dance time, and it showed in the record, pretty much lost in the first round every year, but one?

No, purnell lost in the first round every year he got the team there.

He left out of nowhere at the end off the recruiting cycle, with only 1 recruit in Marcus Thornton. Thornton decided to go to Georgia. We had 0 ACC caliber freshman brownell's first year. We made the tourney and actually won a game. In brownell's second year, OP's remaining players were clearly not very good.

Again, we need to not completely flop this year, and win a game in the tourney next year for him not to be fired. Tomorrow is a must win. Looking forward to it
