Swinney and Streeter never considered transfer portal to add QB depth

The transfer portal was never an option for a Clemson coaching staff dealing with questions surrounding the depth at quarterback heading into the summer and fall. Full Story »

What a lot of you guys don't seem to understand is that the players that are in the portal are not looking for backup jobs. They are typically leaving their school looking for a starting position. Clemson would not be offering what they want anyway.

People leave schools for all types of different reasons. They go to other programs for all kinds of different reasons. That is a gross oversimplification and simply not true. A lot of players are looking for more playing time. But I guarantee you a lot of those guys would rather be on the two deep and hit the field for Clemson than starting at some other program.

Okay, give me an example of a quarterback that was available that would love to back up DJ? Who do you think would do that, for one year, much less two??? Anyone?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I find it concerning that they didn't at least consider

Jul 21, 2021, 11:11 AM

the transfer portal option.

I certainly understand the preference for developing players within the program rather than using the transfer portal. I also realize that a true difference maker might not have been available through the portal. But to not even consider the portal, when our QB room was admittedly very thin?!?

The unfortunate reality is that Dabo will likely need to use the transfer portal eventually, or risk being at a deficit depth-wise. As much as I love our program culture, and feel that it stands the best chance of keeping an intact roster, if we are honest with ourselves that isn't enough to keep star players happy when they aren't getting the playing time they think they deserve. We will lose our share of transfers, and if we think we can simply replace them without using the portal then we might be in for a rude awakening.

IMO anyone close to being a true difference maker wouldn't want to come in and sit the bench while the game was competitive or until the starting QB suffers an injury.
I'm guessing 9 out of 10(easily) enter the portal due to lack of playing time.
Another thought is, if DJ had gone down in the Spring game, I feel strongly Dabo would have shown serious interest in the portal.

JK… I couldn’t disagree more.

What folks need to know when they come to Clemson is that they are going to get a shot to start and play if they stick it out. They are not going to have the tables turned on them by having a transfer come helicoptering in and take up their opportunity who didn’t pick Clemson in the first place. NOOOOO! Not only NO, but HELL NO!

I think once people realize that skipping out to find greener pastures is not all it is cracked up to be, the coaches who stick by the guys who chose them in the first place will be much more desired to play for.

I'm not sold on TP coming back this season

Jul 21, 2021, 11:55 AM

Case in point: Mike Soroka of the Atlanta Braves returning too soon. He tore his Achilles last August 3rd and tried to make a comeback only to re-tear it again supposedly because of his body's rejection of the sutures. I don't think TP should even make an attempt to come back this year but what do I know?

Not sure about the baseball player because I assume he had the best case scenario for treatment too and considered the team doctor's advice. Sometimes people have bad luck.

TP11 is a young college athlete with access to the best recovery options available at a top notch program too. I mean, we've had players come back and play after tearing their ACLs in the spring.

My guess is TP11 returns around late October to November-ish time frame and is carefully worked back in.

2024 white level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If he fully recovers, iI think he’ll transfer ...

Jul 21, 2021, 9:03 PM

He’ll be competing with DJ and Cade Klubnik next season.

And then just maybe the following season ... Arch Manning (speculation) ...

Taisun is way too good to be a career back-up but probably not good enough to ever star5 at Clemson.

So you'd feel "really good" about Billy Wiles playing against Georgia? Don't believe that for a second, Coach. Had you said that in 2017 when our five QBs averaged 4*, I'd have believed you. But today, with a 2* walk-on with 12 passes, a 3* true frosh baseball-playing WR, and a 2* true frosh that TNet doesn't even have listed on the roster behind DJ, I can't agree with you.

Everyone keep your fingers crossed until Taisun is healthy.

If Dabo says he feels good about it, I for one trust him. I think he could win with Forrest Gump at QB!

in great shape with Taisun as the main back-up.

We weren’t.

If we lose DJ for any length of time, we’re sunk as far as CFP goes.

DJ has to remain healthy.

Re: TNET: Swinney and Streeter never considered transfer portal to add QB depth

Jul 21, 2021, 2:19 PM

I am not a fan of the transfer portal, but like $$, it is now a huge part of CFB.
Some teams like Georgia have greatly enhanced their team talent level with it.

I am glad Dabo has not gone that route, even though I know all teams will be forced to do so.
I think the "sitting out a year" was a good rule, but even that was not evenly enforced.

I am less worried than most as to the QB room. Ours is way better than most.

The two best players for Ohio State when they kicked our ### last year came from the transfer portal.

poorly and then has to scramble to find a starting QB capable of competing with the TWO we had on scholarship.

The portal is simply the path of least resistance for the disaffected to find the field.

Someone in this thread said he thought Georgia improved themselves through the portal.

No, they had to scramble to find a QB because they lost Fields.

So, if there isn't any interest in using the transfer portal, what is coach Pearman doing again? I'd take THAT job AND I'd probably be pretty good at it!~

For all the positives of Dabo, this is just a ####### take to have. I can understand him not wanting to add through the TP for most positions, but QB is different. First, it’s the position with arguably the least quality depth on any team, just because only one QB can play at a time. Our already thin depth, is now non existent.

As with anything, if DJ stays healthy, he doesn’t pop a covid protocol, then all is probably good. But let’s hope Dabo does learn a very obvious lesson in risk mitigation halfway through what could have been a championship season.

Re: TNET: Swinney and Streeter never considered transfer portal to add QB depth

Jul 22, 2021, 1:15 AM

The transfer portal is full of players who are not happy that they are not automatically made a starter. Dabo still tries to get players that fit the culture he has instilled.

I am concerned about our depth issue at QB. I remember when DW went down against GA Tech.

However, I think it would take unique circumstances for a QB to be picked up via the portal. It would have to a QB thar Clemson was already recruiting and chose to go to another school because of our previous depth at QB.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I’m sorry but this is the one time I’ll disagree with Coach Swinney.

Jul 22, 2021, 10:01 AM

I’m not saying we should have taken someone but we should have considered it.

I just disagree with his philosophy on the transfer portal. I’m not saying we take 5 to 10 kids a year but we should take 1 or 2 a year. Similar to what Notre Dame is going to do.
