DJU thoughts for this off-season

Nov 15, 2021, 12:23 PM

So it hasn’t worked out like everyone hoped. Cade Klubnik comes in Jan, so he’ll be pushed in spring practice immediately which will make him better or break him. At this point we have to assume Dabo will be sticking with DJU, so I’m hoping he cuts about 20lbs on his frame for speed/agility, and dedicates his off-season to throwing with his WRs instead of going going back to back to Cali Cali. I definitely think DJ’s parents going through a messy divorce has had something to do with his preparation and focus this season. Hopefully he can also work through those demons or Cade will be starting sooner rather than later, a la Trevor 4 games into 2019.

Dabo benched Bryant for TL...

Nov 15, 2021, 12:32 PM

It was an unpopular and somewhat controversial decision in the eyes and minds of some, but Dabo made the decision that was clearly in the best interest of the team.

If necessary, I am confident Dabo would do it again in the case of DJ and CK.

Re: Dabo benched Bryant for TL...

Nov 15, 2021, 1:02 PM

IMO, Dabo's personal, private thoughts are that he can't wait until Cade Klubnik gets to Clemson, and he has learned just a part of the book. DJ will be hanging by a thread that is old, and worn!!!

I think it depends......

Nov 15, 2021, 1:22 PM [ in reply to Dabo benched Bryant for TL... ]

I personally think the 2018 QB situation was WAY different than this year.

In 2018 the QB was "the missing piece"........and it was OBVIOUS

This year the QB isn't the missing piece........the problems run so much deeper than JUST THE QB. That's why I haven't called for DJ's head as the starter............no, he hasn't been good, but the results wouldn't be any different w/ Taisun at the helm.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm not so sure the QB isn't the missing piece.

Nov 15, 2021, 1:48 PM

On Saturday, with the exception of the TD pass to Collins right before the half, all of the back-up QB's who played looked better than DJ IMO.

I'm not saying at any given time a backup QB hasn't looked..

Nov 15, 2021, 2:01 PM

better than DJ. I'm saying it doesn't matter what QB we plug in we're not going to change our offensive output much more than it is when our WRs, Oline, playcalling, injuries, etc.... are the same.

in 2018 we essentially had EVERYTHING for an explosive offense except a QB who could stretch the field. Heck, even the Oline was "adequate" (not great, but adequate). This year we have a clustered mess of problems on our hands.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No argument there.***

If we have any QB in College football in the top 50 in QB rating we are undefeated or a 1 loss team still in the top 4 CFP rankings.
You can't get around that.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That just speculation...

Re: Dabo benched Bryant for TL...

There is some audio from Dabo discussing the decision to start TL the next game.

What they saw from him when he played was him checking in and out of plays based on the defense, something KB never was able to do.

Developmentally, TL had passed KB in decision making.

That's why they were going to start TL the next game but play both QBs.

Comparing this to DJ and CK, it doesn't look like it would take much to pass DJ in decision making.

Re: DJU thoughts for this off-season

According to the TNET "future schedules" page we open with Furman next season.

Then there is a 2 week gap before we play LA Tech.

That likely means we will get 1 warm up game before we have 2 ACC games in weeks 2 and 3.

It should mean that we get to see multiple QBs in the opener, but I would be shocked if a true freshman can unseat veterans by enough margin to be trusted with conference games in weeks 2 and 3.

We need to hope DJ gets his groove back in the offseason to be ready for those early conference games.

That's why I referenced the information in the way I did, because I thought I had seen different as well.

If we open with GA Tech on the road, then there is a huge advantage to the veteran to start at QB.

Right now, there are only 5 dates locked in but it looks like Moose is correct that we open with GT on 9/5.

Re: DJU thoughts for this off-season

Nov 15, 2021, 1:30 PM [ in reply to Re: DJU thoughts for this off-season ]

Lets not forget that Klubnik is coming to Clemson rank pretty close to TL16 when he got to Clemson. The biggest difference in the two, is that TL16 was 6'5", and already being said to be an NFL first pick-First round prospect. But as college recruits, they are pretty close to being the same, IMO...

Deshaun Watson was listed as 6'2" 200 lbs entering Clemson, and Cade is listed as 6-2, 186 lbs playing HS. He will need to put on weight and muscle before starting at Clemson, but the same should have happened b4 DW4 became a starter IMO. Both DW4 and Cade had a nice arm playing HS FB, and both of them was pretty good running the ball in HS. IMO, Cade is really close to being a DW4, but Cade I think has played better competition in Texas, that DW4 played against in Georgia, IMO....

I think he hits the portal before next season starts

Nov 15, 2021, 12:34 PM

if Clubnik is as good as advertised and learns the system well enough from being an early enrollee. And if he performs well in the Spring and Summer I think DJ will see the writing on the wall.

Re: I think he hits the portal before next season starts

I’m not disagreeing with you, but curious to hear who you think would pick up DJ? I don’t see any Power 5 team picking him up. Maybe an FCS TEAM?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't know who would or wouldn't

Nov 15, 2021, 12:49 PM

I just think if Clubnik looks good then DJ is going to have a decision to make. I don't think he will be ok with a freshman coming in and possibly taking his QB1 spot.

Not saying that Clubnik will definitely do that, just saying if he does Dj will have some decisions to make.

Tons of teams would line up to take him in the portal because coaches all over the country would kill for a QB with DJ's physical talents.

Coaches are extremely confident in their abilities and almost every single one of them with a need at QB would be convinced they could clean up his mental issues and have him performing at a high level.

So you think our offensive staff can’t do these things?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I think he hits the portal before next season starts

Nov 16, 2021, 11:28 AM

Not what I am saying at all.

Almost every single coach has so much confidence in himself that he thinks he can do things better than other coaches.

They look from afar and see that DJ has the arm, the size, and previous success and they assume that Clemson's coaches are falling short and that they could do better with what DJ brings to the table.

I am not suggesting someone else would actually do better, but the college football landscape if full of guys who think they can.

+1. 100% right other coaches will clamor for DJ with confidence in their abilities to “fix” him.

I also think there's a good chance that DJ enters the portal this summer and goes to a west coast team that doesn't feature RPO (if such a team exists)...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agree, But I Think Your Timing Is Off.

Nov 15, 2021, 2:09 PM

I think DJ enters the transfer portal long before spring practice, most likely in time to enter the spring semester of whatever institution he chooses to transfer(I think it will be USC).

through practice and conditioning. I imagine we will go into the season like 2017 with at least 2 playing a lot. Maybe three with TP, if all three stay. Likewise I hope to see some development in the young line and better help up front to make the qb's life easier.

I was told that the coaches asked DJ to lose 20-30 lbs this off season and instead he gained 10, so their expectations due to his limited mobility were a problem from day 1.

Re: DJU thoughts for this off-season

Nov 15, 2021, 3:17 PM

I'm just hoping this off season DJ takes the time to go visit some QB camps and get him a personal QB coach. He has the physical talent and I am assuming money now with that huge NIL deal he had to make this possible. He needs to just take the time off, get his mind right and mechanics straight. We know he is capable of being a decent to good QB. But if he can't regain himself to what he was or not make any progress, I hope he can know when to call it quits.

My suspicion is that DJ already has one foot out the door and the coaches are probably OK with that. Whether it's its parents divorce, him getting fat, or just his general inability to throw an accurate pass or look beyond his first read, DJ has been historically bad this season and its unlikely he ever takes another snap for us after this season.

I don't think they want him to leave, but the reality is that as soon as the coaches bench him he will leave anyway so him leaving before the season starts would be much less of a distraction and allow us to determine who our backup will be. Him leaving isn't ideal, obviously, but if he's going to leave either way its better for him, and the team, that he leave in the spring rather than September after he gets benched.

Re: DJU thoughts for this off-season

Nov 16, 2021, 7:10 AM

Cade will be a great QB here. In a perfect world, DJ improves his play and Cade sits. Cade is in desperate need of power hour and a good nutrition program. He’s rail thin and will get broken to pieces if he has to play as a true freshman.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: DJU thoughts for this off-season

Nov 16, 2021, 7:15 AM

I don’t understand where this talk of DJ changing positions or transferring is coming from. It sounds like a lot of you don’t understand how all this works. DJU was a 5 start recruit at QB & was the #1 pro style QB in his class. That dude is not changing positions period. He would transfer if it came to that.

I’ve never heard about his parents dealing with a nasty divorce & that makes a lot of sense & helps paint the picture of why he’s performed the way he has. I also think DJ signed some big NIL deals & got paid this summer & didn’t workout or train.

But I hope all Clemson fans read this part I’m about to type, if DJ goes into this off-season & doesn’t transfer (which idk what has indicated anything about that) & he buckles down & goes out & trains, works out, polishes up on what he needs to improve on then he will be one of the best QB’s Clemson has ever seen. The kid has so much potential it’s unreal.

So just like how ONE down year for Clemson truly doesn’t mean much in the bigger picture, a sophomore slump year for DJ does not mean his career is anywhere close to over. The sky is not falling. If Cade comes in & out performs DJ then great & I hope Dabo benches DJ but don’t count the kid out quite yet.
