Just curious... if we win the coin toss against Alabama, should we choose to play defense first?

And to answer your question, the only way to ensure you play defense first would be to choose to kick off. But then the other team will choose to receive the ball to start the second half, so you obviously don't want to do that. If you want to play defense first the obvious choice is to defer. That's what Saban always does when he wins a toss, and more often than not what Dabo does too. Choosing defense isn't a literal option. You know that though right?

That's cool.
His post was about a long running joke of an argument that was had when someone (whose name will not be mentioned so we don't summon him like Beetlejuice or the Candyman) argued repeatedly that we many coaches have chosen to play defense first. Even when presented with an explanation he stuck to his guns.

But when you defer, you're basically choosing to play

defense first, aren't you?
It would be a shane, umm I mean shame to think otherwise.

I'm not really sure what you're trying to say, but I think

you're confused. While it's pretty common verbiage used when coaches defer, you can't specifically choose to play defense first. Do you get that or not? Hard to tell.
By the way, I made a boo-boo previously referencing Saban. Apparently he does not always choose to defer. Earlier in his career (when touchbacks came out to the 20) he was quoted as saying, "we defer to play defense first". The thought pattern was that playing good defense can result in a 3-and-out, the opponent punting deep in their territory, good field position in return, and momentum gained. But more recently he says, "I don't necessarily buy that, but a lot of people like to play defense first, but I would really rather play offense first."
Wait, can you literally choose to play offense? I don't think so.
Obviously choosing to play offense or defense are not literal options, but what you do after winning the toss dictates which side of the ball you're going to play first. I think that's where you're getting confused. Does this help?

I was a Gary Patterson man myself. What's your point troll? You were behind him all the way? I think not. Not many were. No one but Dabo could have seen what we have now.

...you or anyone else. It was an attempt at humor, albeit apparently it was a poor one. No need to go to the troll card either way. For what it's worth, I was on the fence following the day I watched us lose in Charlotte to USF. Personally I was willing to give him one more year, for what it's worth.
