"Just Ted Cruz defending Nazis," Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., tweeted.

Oct 28, 2021, 3:01 PM

https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2021/10/28/ted-cruz-nazi-salute-senate-hearing/

I dislike Cruz but I dislike liars more. Cruz wasn't defending Nazis and Swalwell is either lying or an idiot.

I watched Cruz grilling Garland. Cruz didn't defend Nazis.

That's why nobody takes these claims seriously anymore.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

True. He should have said "defending Nazi gesture"...

Oct 28, 2021, 3:55 PM

not sure that makes Cruz look any better, but it's more accurate than what Cruz did.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: True. He should have said "defending Nazi gesture"...

Oct 28, 2021, 4:01 PM

I dont know that even that would be 100% accurate.

Cruz was defending a parent who was calling the school board Nazis. He wasn't defending Nazis. In my opinion, that quote would make it seem he was defending Nazis. Just my opinion.

To me, it goes a little deeper than defending a gesture.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He was defending the use of the gesture by a parent

Oct 28, 2021, 4:07 PM

who was calling the school board Nazis. He wasn't defending Nazis, but he was defending the gesture the parent used (Sieg Heil salute) as something protected under the first amendment. So, the congressman was wrong to say Cruz was defending Nazis. That's true.

But, I'm not sure it's a great look by Cruz to be defending Nazi gestures whether or not he's right about their protection under the first amendment (which he is). I'm sure there were other examples he could have brought up so it comes off..curious when he chooses that one example.

Re: He was defending the use of the gesture by a parent

Oct 28, 2021, 4:08 PM

He chose other examples. Several, in fact.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Then bringing up the nazi salute one was unnecessary

Oct 28, 2021, 4:10 PM

to his point.

Re: Then bringing up the nazi salute one was unnecessary

Oct 28, 2021, 4:14 PM

Disagree.

I believe the salute was brought up specifically because the school board felt "threatened."

Grow thicker skin if a salute makes you feel threatened or either get out of politics.

Re: Then bringing up the nazi salute one was unnecessary

Oct 28, 2021, 4:21 PM

Yep, the memo sent by Garland to DOJ actually listed the Nazi salute so that would be why Cruz pointed it out..

"He said that of the 20 incidents cited, “15 on their face are non-violent.”

“They involved insults, they involved a Nazi salute, that’s one of the examples," he said. "My god! A parent did a Nazi salute at a school board meeting because they thought the policy was oppressive. Attorney General Garland, is doing a Nazi salute at an elected official protected by the First Amendment?" Mr Cruz asked."

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Gonna have to agree to disagree on that, I guess.

Oct 28, 2021, 4:22 PM [ in reply to Re: Then bringing up the nazi salute one was unnecessary ]

I feel comfortable in being on the side of not defending a nazi salute and really feel comfortable not being on whatever side Ted Cruz is on ;).

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Gonna have to agree to disagree on that, I guess.

Oct 28, 2021, 4:36 PM

I feel comfortable not being on the side of a liar (Swallwell) and looking at this in the context Cruz was using.

Also, I feel comfortable knowing I can disagree with someone's politics but also know that occasionally he or she can be right. ??

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm not on the side of Swalwell or Cruz for what it's worth

Oct 28, 2021, 4:39 PM

I made it clear I thought Swalwell was wrong in what he said, but I also don't think it's wise of Cruz or anyone else to defend using the Nazi hand gesture.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I'm not on the side of Swalwell or Cruz for what it's worth

Oct 28, 2021, 4:43 PM

Ok my bad, my points about context, and my second paragraph still stand.

??

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

exactly the parent was making a point

Oct 28, 2021, 4:19 PM [ in reply to He was defending the use of the gesture by a parent ]

that they are expected to bow down and just take it from the school board, thus brought the salute.

The whole thing is dumb if you have a brain that can comprehend context.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What does doing a nazi salute add to the context?***

Oct 28, 2021, 4:23 PM

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

that the laws are oppressive

Oct 28, 2021, 4:31 PM

and parents have no say in the process. Its not hard, you are just playing dumb, so I am done here.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Before you go, answer one quick question...

Oct 28, 2021, 4:34 PM

You used words to illustrate your point just now, so would doing a nazi hand gesture along with your point add or subtract from the overall message?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

the guy is mad.....actually furious

Oct 28, 2021, 4:40 PM

in the heat of the moment, he had a thought and he did the salute. I don't hate him for it and it probably helped the cause because without these types of demonstrations, we will still have teachers taking kids to Trans-reading days, gay bars and providing inappropriate books. Could he have said something more articulate, maybe, but many of these parents are just hard working people, not speech writers and have no clue how to be heard, so they do things like this....

Thats what I got.

I disagree with the salute but also believe that we would have never known his story without the salute.

Heat of the moment thing I'm sure.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't want to know the "story" of someone using the salute

Oct 28, 2021, 5:03 PM

clearly, they aren't of sound mind so whatever point they're trying to make will be disregarded.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I don't want to know the "story" of someone using the salute

Oct 28, 2021, 5:06 PM

Many stories I dont want to hear about after a fit of anger.

Since my son has started playing football, I see many middle finger salutes, etc.

But, those guys get more attention than the quiet, reserved person. (Me) lol

Just think, Cruz would have never mentioned the Nazi salute had our attorney General hadn't cited it as violence in the memo to the DOJ.

LOL

That's true as well although it should have never been cited as an act of violence by our attorney General.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yeah, when have nazi gestures ever led to violence?***

Oct 28, 2021, 5:04 PM

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Yeah, when have nazi gestures ever led to violence?***

Oct 28, 2021, 5:09 PM

Leading to violence is totally different than citing the salute as violence. You're intelligent enough to know the difference.

Either way, I'm done with this convo. You just can't admit Cruz was right in this one instance and just leave it at that. And that's fine. ??

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Some might say, "leading to violence" is a threat

Oct 28, 2021, 5:16 PM

which is what the letter included it as. I'm sure you are intelligent to understand that distinction.

I'm fine with ending the conversation as I think we've made it pretty clear where we stand on this issue.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

maybe the parent should learn what the Nazis did

Oct 28, 2021, 5:21 PM [ in reply to exactly the parent was making a point ]

Re: maybe the parent should learn what the Nazis did

Oct 28, 2021, 5:23 PM

True.

Although, I believe many of us could stand to learn what Nazis did. We often throw around that word too easily at our political enemies.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Schools asked for people to wear masks in school, that's it.

Oct 28, 2021, 6:15 PM [ in reply to maybe the parent should learn what the Nazis did ]

and some idiot(s) decided that was an infringement on their liberty to the level of fascism/authoritarianism and nazis. And for whatever reason Ted Cruz decided that those idiots are the ones that are the victims here.

Like the saying goes, we are living in very unserious times.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't understand "bow down and take it"

Oct 29, 2021, 7:57 AM [ in reply to exactly the parent was making a point ]

As long as the school board is making rules that they are legally allowed to make, then that's all there is to it. If a parent doesn't like it, they can vote for different school board candidates, or run themselves. And yes, they are allowed to state their opinions at meetings. If that doesn't change their mind, then there's an election coming up. In the meantime, there are other schooling options as well.

Am I "bowing down" to someone if I pay a speeding ticket? That's the law, and I submit to it. I guess we can call that "bowing down", but that's a pretty pejorative way of saying it.
