Back to being spoiled fan, was looking at box score...DJ...

9/19 for 99 yards, 0 TD, 1 INT
For the season...this is pretty incredible
54.7% completion percentage, 172 (!!!) passing yards/per game, 9 TD, INT
There's no way Dabo can do his usual "Let the older, less talented guy start when a more talented freshmen is there" routine with Klubnik next year, right? RIGHT?

where KB got every chance to show he was a good enough option. That GT game showed he really wasn't. As for that particular 9/19 we'd have to look at how bad the incompletions were. By the end of the year DJ didn't really have any high talent and physically mature receivers to go to.

As far as DJ, this was an extraordinarly bad season and even with the injuries I assure you he had more talent to work with than most FBS teams...these season long stats are pretty unreal
Completion percentage 54.7% - 116th in FBS (out of 126) Passing yards per attempt 6.0 - 118th QB Rating 108.7 - 120th
I'm actually even amazed we won 9 games this year...I really hope any raises reserved for the offensive staff or instead given to Venables and crew

Stoudt and Watson. Putting the hand and knee injuries aside, I don't see how Stoudt gets back on the field after that Watson pass against UGA. KB and Trevor was a little less clear, at first. KB had done some winning and Trevor didn't come out and fully take the job until that GT game.

Nov 29, 2021, 9:15 AM

let's be honest here...we STARTED Will Swinney and a pair of true freshman receivers in this game. We're down to third-string as starters. A couple of those misses Saturday were actually good decisions to throw the ball away or really poor routes by the receivers. I'm not any quarterback in the country was going to look good throwing the ball for us Saturday night.

The one thing Klubnik DOES seem to have by all accounts that DJ doesn't is that innate leadership trait that Watson and Lawrence have. We might need that more so right now than a big arm, to be honest. Like you said though...five stars mean nothing but hype until you start taking college snaps.

jump from Sophomore to Junior seasons.
His stats were terrible and a slightly better QB gets us another ACC Championship. He also lost Ross, Ngata, Ladsdon, EJ Williams, and Galloway. Those are the top 5 pass catchers on Clemson's team, talent wise. Collins and Collins started to step up, but they are true freshman. Also, there was alot of turnover on the line from week to week, especially early in the season.
I chalk this season up to injuries and rebuilding, next year might be special though.

I think he had a combination of mental and physical problems this year. I wonder if the entire year would not have been different if we had played Georgia week two or three and had a warm up in there before them.
I think he has the talent and he led his high school team to a LOT of wins. And we beat some huge names in getting him signed. If he gets his head right he could still be what we thought he was.

that can survive behind a stout line making throws if he doesn't have to move a lot. Think old-school pocket passer. I think some of the accuracy issues and pocket presence might very well be attributable to the mental aspect more so than physical or scheme, but injuries coupled with sub-par line play made those flaws shine brighter. He's also got to learn how to survey the whole field instead of getting locked into one side, but again the line play could have sped up his internal clock this year. It is possible that he can be a very good QB, but I think the jig is up with him being a game-changer. I hope the lessons of this year elevate him next year, but he also needs to become a little more fiery with his leadership.
I guess like the rest of the fanbase, Bojangles, and Dr. Pepper...we'll have to wait and see.

I get the WR injuries but DJ's accuracy was HORRIBLE
Nov 29, 2021, 10:04 AM
[ in reply to I wouldn't count DJ out quite yet. He could make quite the ] |

Countless passes that were 3-5 yards over the WR's head and had no touch on slants/posts and would throw the ball way in front of the WR
DJ finally improved by just lofting up the deep ball and letting the WR go up and get it or draw a flag - but accuracy is one of the hardest things to fix and I just don't see how an offseason will do it

He's not very big right now and doesn't have the strongest arm. It is not the norm for a freshman QB to come in and play right away. He's going to need some time.

and mature from starting their sophomore year to their junior year.
Seriously, I think making assumptions about how good a player will be in a future year is pretty naïve, considering what we've seen at the QB position in college football over the last 10-15 years.
Not to mention we would hope our OL and WR corps is going to be better next year.

Nov 29, 2021, 11:05 AM

Seems he tries to sit in the pocket too long before he throws. That doesn't work well with an O-line as porous as ours is.
He needs an upgraded processor with a larger onboard cache to allow for faster passing.
And he's just generally slow running, too.

Mix his issues with our QB development track record
Nov 29, 2021, 10:19 AM
[ in reply to Right, there's no way players ever improve.... ] |

Other than Stoudt having a great single bowl game with playcalling adjusted for his QB style, can you name another Clemson QB who developed and improved greatly from start to finish? I can’t. The great ones started great and finished great, and the average ones started average and transferred out average.
Look at TP. 4 star prospect ranked 5-10 in the country at recruiting time. Been with us since 2019 and our staff doesn’t trust him for more than a series at a time. We don’t develop QB’s, period.

I don't think Dabo will throw a true freshman in the fire so DJ might start two games. That's if he can't reason any better than throwing to someone other than his primary receiver and enters the portal.

Won routes, high pointed catches, blocked, racked up YAC and most importantly, if they didn’t win 50:50 balls _ they, for the most part, made dang sure the defender didn’t.
Other than Ross, Clemson WRs were a little soft this year and not as refined in their skill. The WR group has talent but need to work hard at their trade.
