I get a kick out of this attitude.

The federal government has a mile and a half long list (like the Tesla line) of things they subsidize, which all fall in the category of "whatever" and "meh" for most people. But those same people get all kinds of militant about a subsidy with a tangible end result--there's a massive difference between 100,000 charging stations and 500,000 charging stations across the country. "NOT MY TAX DOLLARS!"
Why are some people so uncomfortably protective of the fossil fuel model (and also bitch about gas prices in the same sentence)?

be solved by the private market. I mean, Eisenhower didn't pay for every Esso and Gulf station when the interstates were built, they were put in by corporate and individual gas station owners who saw an opportunity.
There's a reason niche companies like Electrify America require heavy subsidies from Volkswagen, and EVGo has a meager stock price....it's a tough business model here in 2022. Add to that the fact that gas stations don't have competition from your home. You don't have a gas pump and underground tank at your house that you can fill up whenever you want.
So right now, there's not a tangibly positive (financially at least) end result to the scenario you describe. There is a scenario where we are throwing a shidpot of taxpayer money at a money losing proposition for the near term.
Just like gas stations make their money off slushies and corn nuts, the EV charging biz is going to have to come up with a value add for people charging....you just don't make enough selling watts.

fruit, why wouldn't companies like say, Duke Energy, start throwing up charging points all over locations throughout their grid?

Siting, acquisition, and installation
The big problem for them or any 3rd party is the lack of standardization
This is where the gov could step in and set a regulation that all charging stations will have X plug and Y specs so any car can charge anywhere

I'd be fine with that. Seems like a standard is merited.

Govt standards gave us toilets that take three flushes to kill a good deuce, and dishwashers that take 3 hours to run a load of dishes.
Let's let the private market decide the standard too.

percent of the rare Earth metals on the planet. China's pretty much swooped in and laid claim via $$$ to the South American mines also. Good thing we are getting along well with those two countries. Should be smooth sailing on the horizon if we convert everyone to EV's and still need those two to count on for batteries.

Don't forget about Afghanistan ... they have huge lithium deposits.
Uncle Joe Biden bought (OK, gave) a lot of good will to the Taliban, which is rumored to like things that go Ka-boom and Ka-bang.
All ole' Joe's got to do is give then another ~$85B of military equipment, and then sponsor one of their special vest-wearing contests.
All Your Lithium Belong to Us.

has gotten, what, 5 or 10% more efficient over the last century? They STILL, after all that innovation, waste upwards of 70% of the energy in a unit of fossil fuel. Battery technology is ever-evolving, and we'll likely see functional saline battery technology ready for rollout in the next decade. Batteries are a means for storing energy. That's it. And there's a myriad of ways (and substances) that can be used to do it.
There's this reflexive tick that the hardcore fossil fuelers have that obligates them to shit on the idea of building the strategy around what the infrastructure should look like, and get the damn thing rolling. Fossil fuel is not tenable, it never has been, and we simply don't have the luxury of draining American oil fields over the next 20 years, and THEN figuring out a solution when the planet is dry.
