I'm in an argument with a tarheel

Jul 7, 2022, 3:30 PM

He keeps saying that UNC is a bigger brand than Clemson. I keep reminding him they fill a 50,000 seat stadium when full, while Clemson plays in front of 80,000 to 83,000 fans. But he keeps going on about academics and basketball and all. Football is what's driving this all.

Our media value is driven by the bandwagon.

I’d say almost all programs are as well.

Tell him Brad Brownell is UNCs daddy

And he should stay out of football discussions. I hope he enjoys Mack Brown's last season in Chapel Hole. Could get really ugly.

Why are you arguing with a fence post? Save your sanity and just ignore ignorance.

Their basketball is what our football is to us.
They just have more basketball championships than we have football championships. However our football championships carry a lot of heavy weight.

They do their thing....and we do ours.

To add on to what you said, football is what is driving conference realignment, not basketball, so their basketball fans mean less than us football fans

Folks living in NC don't give a chit about college football. It has always been about BIG 4 basketball and still is. For years the ACC basketball tournament was held in Greensboro, NC. I attended many of them. All of my friends in NC never wanted to talk football. Only basketball. The term in the ACC, Tobacco Road came about when ACC teams outside of the "BIG 4" had to make the annual trip into NC to play Wake, Duke, UNC and NC State. For years, Dean Smith and Coach K and later Roy Williams, were the most powerful people in the ACC. Football in the ACC has always taken a back seat to Basketball.

We should have left the ACC years ago.

You can tell your friend that outside of NC, no one gives a chit about UNC.

Ha! Few things I want more than busting that little basketball party of four up and sending them off to different conferences.

Academics?

From UNC?

Was he asleep for the 20 or 30 years they were giving athletes degrees without them doing any work?

"To seem, rather than to be"

It's all about the football television contracts.

Most of the money from basketball is associated with March Madness, not from individual regular season games.

My response would be…

Football, how many national championships do you have?

Basketball, yep you are great.

Academics, you mean the place I could have went to and got a degree without having to go to class?

They probably are a bigger brand because of MJ and basketball.

Our football program, which is driving realignment is head and shoulders above theirs

Aggie who lives in North Carolina here. UNC is a pretty large brand outside NC. They've never done much with football potential, but the fans in North Carolina are already in place should they decide to capitalize. Not a whole lot any of us can do about it except beat them and make fun of Mack Brown.

"Brand" now means "national eyes on TV."

Clemson could play East Carolina at the same time UNC plays NCSU. Clemson would get 4 times the viewers.

Clemson wins "brand game" worse than 63-17.

You clearly are confusing football with a brand. Probably every sporting goods store in the country has Carolina caps and every time CBS shows Jordan hitting the winning shot in the National Championship game they have more fans.

Just ask him who brings the football revenue to the ACC? That's where the real conference money comes from. Clemson football averages 3.6 times more viewers than UNC. If the ACC paid by TV value, Clemson would be making $90 million and UNC about $25 million.

When he starts talking about their superior academics

Jul 7, 2022, 5:31 PM

remind him that all our athletes have always had to go to class. For years theirs didn’t. SMU is the only school that has ever received the Death Penalty. If ever there was a second one it should have been UNC. What they allowed was inexcusable and, rather than facing up to what they did, they spend millions of NC tax payers money defending it.
