So my uncle has lost over $300,000 in a period of about

Sep 27, 2021, 3:02 PM

2 years. Like legitimately lost it. He inherited over 200 acres from my granddad (his dad) and sold it almost immediately. Maybe he got like $320,000 for ~200 acres.

He says he gave some money to a friend, they got his checkbook and now all the money is gone.

I think he is too dumb to hire an attorney. Maybe he spent it all on h00kers and bl0w? This must be the part of my blood that puts mustard on a tomato sandwich.

Is there any way to help someone like this, someone who doesn't want help?

FWIW, he pretty much did this same thing in ~1995? My granddad sold 200 acres and gave him the money and it gone.

Remember how hysterical it was when the NC state kicker missed from 39 yards to win the game? And of course this was after he missed two other field goals earlier in the game.

4 real options:

Sep 27, 2021, 3:06 PM

1. Sex
2. Drugs
3. Gambling
4. Some combination of the above.

*I'm assuming he doesn't have any assets to show for the money.

It's possible he has fewer assets***

I'm going to theorize

Sep 27, 2021, 3:06 PM

that people should stop giving him large sums of money, unless they just hate money, in which case he's a good person to give it to.

so his friend possibly stole over a quarter million from him

Sep 27, 2021, 3:07 PM

and he doesn't care?

That's what he says, he has some care b/c he told my mom

Sep 27, 2021, 3:10 PM

He is a complicated man.

How old a feller is he? Fair number of older gents fall for

Sep 27, 2021, 3:07 PM

the charms of a young lady who just needs a little help here and there...

I agree this undoubtedly related to the whole mustard/tomato sandwich situation.

Man if that kicker coulda just missed one more kick after OT1 that woulda been something.

If he is telling the truth about the friend taking it, he should have some legal claims against the guy. However, you might have trouble getting a lawyer interested if the uncle isn't interested in pursuing it. If he was scammed, the state AG office may provide some resources.

If he is of unsound mind, you may be looking at a situation where a guardian/conservator should be appointed by a Court to prevent something like this from happening again and to pursue to the lawsuit on your uncle's behalf.

Based on your status as landed gentry, it seems like

Sep 27, 2021, 3:17 PM

you could give him another 200 acres and not even miss it. Don't be greedy. You have hundred acre tracts you haven't seen in years.

I'd like to help, because helping is what I do.

Sep 27, 2021, 3:24 PM

All I need is his phone number and a few days notice of the next time y'all give him 200 acres.

So, as a forensic analyst, I would ask, who had authority to

Sep 27, 2021, 6:07 PM

write checks on the checking account? If they took his checkbook, and wrote fraudulent checks, the bank is liable for cashing those checks. If he gave them signature authority....nevermind.

PS. I am nor really a forensic analyst, but I did sleep in a Sleep Number bed last night.
