I'm going to reveal a secret.

Apr 18, 2014, 1:16 PM

Don't tell anyone, though. As a liberal, I hate to give away one of our more effective political tactics. But as a Clemson Tiger, I feel I owe my brethren the truth.

The FFRA, like PETA and many other fringe groups, uses pop culture as a vehicle to increase their otherwise nonexistent media exposure. College football (and coincidentally, Clemson University), provides an excellent platform to gain that much-needed attention.

This tactic only works when you respond to it. When you read to these stories in The State, or watch them on CNN or Fox News, just move on. If you take the next step and write an editor to defend your religion (which isn't under attack, really), share your outrage on Facebook, or click on the ad-sponsored blog post, all you are really doing is feeding the FFRA trolls and sensationalist media. You are magnifying what is essentially a non-story, and giving it credibility.

Don't get lured in.

Not Baptist, not a church, and not in Westboro.

Excellent points, but as a regular poster on Tnet,

I feel it my duty, nay, my obligation to blow everything out of proportion and garner as many clicks and as much web traffic for Crump and B-Meist as possible, cause ya know, I'm a team player like that

Spot on

Apr 18, 2014, 2:18 PM

If people had just ignored this, there wouldn't have been any effect at all. It's just a letter from a more or less nobody association.

Good point ATL!! Ignore these people and they go away!

Agree, except I think this is outstanding publicity!

Apr 18, 2014, 2:35 PM

You really couldn't purchase publicity like this. I mean, I just listened to a large part of Tiger Rag on national TV. So although I agree that responding to these organizations is what gives them credibility, I think this is a huge win for Clemson as well.
