The Carolina Panther Disdain Here is Laughable

Apr 25, 2020, 9:56 PM

People saying that they "refuse" to draft Clemson players, do you really think the front office is scheming on how to not draft our players? There have been multiple GM's, and now a new owner, I doubt that is the case.

The worst thing the Panthers ever did was drafting Cam, and I only say that because I don't like the guy. That being said, he was the obvious draft pick, and did have several great seasons carrying an otherwise average team. That move almost won a super bowl, so who am I to argue on that one.

A Clemson player will be drafted to Carolina when the situation presents itself, it isn't as if they have never had Clemson players. We could also wonder why the Patriots or Ravens haven't drafted a Clemson player in the same time period as the Panthers have been in the league...

Over 25 years and 195 draft selections the chance to draft a Clemson player has never presented itself? Perhaps it’s a coincidence, but when 29 of 32 teams has drafted a Clemson player since the Panthers have been a franchise it seems purposeful. The only 2 teams to never draft a Clemson player are the Ravens and Panthers. While the Patriots have drafted Clemson players, the last was in 1991.

I tend to remember another tiger who the Panthers passed on in 2016 at nose tackle for a 1st round "stud" DT.

If they waited 2 rounds, they would've been able to take Simmons at 7 no problems.

His name is Grady Jarrett, I don't get all my draft info from Mel Kiper. D-lineman bust more often then not.

The Panthers have literally spent half their draft picks between 2010-2020 on d-line. Im pretty sure that's accurate.the behavior today is why Cam Newton is broken in half, they never invested in O-Line and real weapons for him.

Best for their needs? Dude I’m not saying Carolina intentionally misses on Clemson players but they just loss their best player in Luke. Luke and Thomas Davis are both gone. Their secondary is trash. Isaiah could have helped both of those positions. Then they draft two more defensive linemen in the next three rounds. Idc they didn’t draft him, but don’t say you are trying to build a positionless football team, and then don’t draft the most positionless football player in the darft.

I am of the opinion that in 26 years they could have given some thought to fostering good will amongst a large fan base in their backyard. They have obviously chosen not to care one whit.I guess all these drafts have been extremely important to their success?Maybe they could learn something about championship football from a few Clemson players, who knows.

Getting away from the drafting Clemson players thing, if we end up with the No.1 pick we would have to get Lawrence. But, I don't see a team with an experienced QB and Christian McCaffrey ending up with the No.1 pick.

Not saying we will be good, but 4-6 wins is reasonable, and would put us back at a similar draft spot to this year.

according to wikipedia, pretty well:

Since they began playing football in 1995, the Panthers have been to four NFC Championship Games; they lost two (1996 and 2005) and won two (2003 and 2015).[140][141] The Panthers have won six division championships: the NFC West championship in 1996 and the NFC South championship in 2003, 2008, 2013, 2014, and 2015. They have won the NFC South more times than any other team in the division. They have finished as runners-up in their division six times, finishing second-place in the NFC West in 1997 and 1999 and finishing second-place in the NFC South in 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2012.[142][143] They have qualified for the playoffs 8 times, most recently in 2017.

She told me that Cam asked the whole family to come back after the game and that he spent hours with them after signing more autographs, taking pictures, and just talking. Cam has much baggage. He was booted from UF for stealing a teammate's computer which he threw out of his window trying to avoid being caught. Seems there wasl some other theft by him but memory fails here.

His dad shopped him around the SEC, asking $200k from MSU -- this came out and was admitted but nothing was done, said it was his dad and not him. Dad said he needed the money to fix his churches.

After he got to AU his dad suddenly got the $$$$$$ to fix his churches and stop them from being condemned.

Hence the name SCAM

Re: The Carolina Panther Disdain Here is Laughable

It is difficult to believe that in the Panther's 25 year existence and over 100 Clemson players drafted, there has never been a situation where a former Tiger was a good fit for the needs of the Panthers?? Seems a little unusual to say the least. Also the number of former Tigers that have ever played for the Panthers in their 25 year history would amount to the number of Tigers currently on the roster of the Raiders. Lastly, one could wonder about the Patriots or the Ravens, but as they are not the "Carolinas" team, who really cares? Personally, I hope I never have to pull for a Tiger in a Panther's uniform so I am not complaining.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don’t think the Panthers are going out of their way not to draft a Clemson player.

Apr 25, 2020, 10:43 PM

I agree that it’s simply a weird coincidence that they never have.

But you would think since they have mostly sucked as a franchise, they would consider drafting one or two in the later rounds if the situation presented itself, simply because they would be likely to get some new fans out of the deal.

I hate the Panthers and always have, so I think it’s great that they never draft Clemson players. My only stipulation this year for Isaiah Simmons was that he not go to Carolina.

Houston played the Panthers in the first preseason game after Watson was drafted.

There was more Clemson fans there then Panthers fans...

The Panthers potentially would of had thousands of new fans if they drafted Simmons...

Brown is great, but he can only do so much at NT.

The last time the Panthers busted a 1st round pick pick bad was a DT Vernon Butler. The same position the Falcons drafted Grady 4 rounds later.

One has a record breaking contract and one is not on that teams roster. The Panthers failed to scout what the Falcons did.

The Panthers spent 3/4 of their last round 1/2 picks on the defensive line and spent 1 more in the late rounds on a d-lineman.

Their offensive line is terrible and they felt the need to shore up the defensive line.

The KC chiefs won the SB with the 18th best defense, the whole NFL thinks its a joke the Panthers didn't spent one pick on offense.

Even if you don't need it,you do it for backup or if you can't extend someone...

If you find no problem with how they treated Cam Newton and Olsen on their way out (two faces of the franchise for almost a decade), you need to take those blue glasses off.

The draft picks aren't why I think there is a bias, the Carolina Panthers 1st season they were declined by SC to play there and Clemson accepted them.

Look at the camp bodies the Panthers sign, is say for every Clemson player, they signed 25 guys from SC that at least got a chance.

Clemson is more important to me then the NFL, bias or not, I care about our guys getting treated right.

So our consistent 7-5 to 9-3 teams weren't good enough in the 2000s to get looks at from the Panthers... But 1-11 to 5-7 teams were?

You know it's bad when Las Vegas is more interested in having ties with us then the freaking Panthers

Apr 26, 2020, 2:43 AM [ in reply to I don’t think the Panthers are going out of their way not to draft a Clemson player. ]

If an NFL team doesn't have a Clemson player on the roster, I am not interested. Clemson represents and interests me. The NFL represents billionaires making more money and feeding their already inflated egos (my opinion, of course). My opinion is also that it is bad business not to feed into the PR of a built-in fan base.

The Panthers should be considered a brand new franchise. The new owner and coach are nothing like their predecessors. Even if prior bias existed, the "old man has passed away".

Time for fresh thinking about them. What Matt Rhule did at Temple and (closer to me) Baylor was nothing short of incredible. I thought Baylor might end their football program after the mess Art Briles left behind. It was worse than most people realize. I wondered who would be stupid enough to take the job because no recruits wanted any association with Baylor.

Rhule's hiring with Joe Brady, dumping Cam and building around McCaffrey represent a complete about-face for the franchise. I was also surprised they didn't take Simmons but Derrick Brown is a monster and was a sensible pick.

Matt Rhule signed more players from Temple and Baylor this off-season then the Panthers signed from Clemson in 27 years.

Nobody is asking for the Panthers to draft 6 Clemson players. Try inviting more then 1 every 4 years to camp. NFL teams invite local college players all the time to come and participate in camp.

Maybe watching Bersin play for 3 years in Charlotte while the Panthers cut Philly Brown (who had over 600 yds their SB year) showed me they have a bit of bias.

You can't tell me the Panthers couldn't find a FA WR better then him in 14, 16, 17 lol.

my focus has always been Clemson.

But I know a lot of folks, primarily here in S.C., who have resentment toward the franchise over what they thought was promised to all Carolinians when it was organized.

Their attitude, rightly or wrongly, is that original marketing in both states stressed the dual-state base with the stadium supposedly being built along the state line near Carowinds. Instead, it wound up downtown Charlotte with uniform colors strikingly close to UNC colors. Then, the same folks point to what has appeared to be an extremely spare interest shown by the team to players from our state.

Other than that, simply, a lot of people were supporting other programs before the Panthers team was organized. My extended family are largely Panther fans. I tend to watch games, featuring Clemson players. Since the Panthers have shown little interest or need for Clemson players, I'll let my family support them.
