I'm 45 and my college days were marred....

Jul 17, 2021, 11:15 AM

with sub par football and autumn Saturdays that had fans alike simply going through the motions. It started off with Tommy and ended with another Tommy but let me tell you about a man named Dabo! Hallelujah....

Like a Phoenix rising from the ashes, little did I know that nothing, absolutely nothing, could hold back the greatness that was bubbling under the surface!

Through the fire came the tempered steel that created what is today a juggernaut of a program and dynasty.

Boys that will preach and I just tackled the dog! Spot the freaking ball!

These years were not the worst years for Clemson football. They were 1960-1976. Even Tommy West's teams had winning records in 3 of his 5 years as head coach but his teams lost all four bowl games when he was the head coach. It was good when he left because he was not going to recruit the top players for Clemson. Coach Tommy Bowden's teams had a winning record for all ten years he was coach but only won three of his nine bowl games that Clemson participated while he was the head coach. The only time we didn't go to a bowl game was in the 2004 year where Clemson and South Carolina got into a fight on the field. Neither team went bowling that year. Only because of Dabo's teams does those years not stand out as good years but granted Tommy lost to the teams we should have beat, like Wake Forest and others.

The ACC's trying to be the IVEY League of the south was the problem. Football players had to have a higher score on college boards than a regular student. When we played Alabama and Southern Cal back to back in 1966 there was an article in the Greenville News that only 3 players on Alabama's team and 1 on Southern Cal's team that could have played in the ACC. Basketball was the only sport that mattered to the conference leaders.
