Paterno's was a cold and calculated decision to cover up for at least 13 years for a child rapist. Joe Paterno will not be remembered for all those wins, he will be remembered for enabling a child rapist.

Woody hayes tried to punch a guy in the heat of the moment.
Joe Paterno covered up the rape of young boys for 13 years,13 years.
Covering up Child rape is just a little above punch some one else. Maybe if Paterno covered it up for a week and then had a change of heart, maybe, but not 13 years of covering up child rape in your own locker room. hell even after if was uncovered he wasnt even willing to apologize for his actions

Both coaches were legendary.
Both coaches became bigger than the schools and programs they coached.
Both coaches had tremendous success and were worshipped by thousands of their students and peers.
If you recall, Hayes had many many issues with anger, abuse of players, etc., that were ignored and/or "swept under the rug" by his administration due to intimidation.
Paterno, as it turns out, had the same "power" over his superiors.
And both men finally suffered a nationally-exposed unforgivable lapse in judgement that in one swift moment, tore down decades of success and admiration.
Woody Hayes was fired the next day after his punch was seen around the country. He should have been fired or at least severely punished, many times before but wasn't, and it eventually cost him EVERYTHING.
Paterno's "punch" was Sandusky's arrest and the exposure of the scandal, and this too, cost him EVERYTHING.
Both will be remembered more for the bad than for all the great things they accomplished. And they probably should be.

Honestly, while the punch is near and dear to us Clemson fans, I think Woody Hayes is remembered as one of the great all time coaches. If it had happened in his prime, he probably wouldn't even been dismissed. It made a convenient, if embarrassing, way to move him to retirement. The average sports college football fan nationally knows who Woody Hayes is and probably knows nothing about that incident.
No amount of time is going to undo the damage to Paterno's reputation, and it may only become worse - if that's possible at this point.

there is uncanny similarity in the way things were 'overlooked' in both instances. That Gator Bowl was the final straw on numerous other incidents for Woody Hayes that had previously been excused away. Both he and Paterno thought they were bigger than the universities they coached for and until everything became undeniably public, they were allowed to do whatever.

Perhaps I have too many Big 10 family and friends. Oh well. Still no debate that the situations aren't comparable at all. My Ohio state inlaws proudly display woody Hayes items to this day. Doubt that will be happening with Paterno. Could be wrong.

you are right, but I think the point is they were remembered for not finishing well. Noah started well but did not end well but was still remembered as being great. King David started well, got bad, but ended well. Woody and Joe Pa will allways be remembered as ending BAD!

I went to that game and wandered around Fulton County Stadium with about 10,000 other people looking for a ticket that day. Everybody was buying and nobody was selling. About 15 minutes before game time, an elderly gentleman sold me two club level seats for face value. He got swarmed by a mob of people trying to outbid me for the tickets, but he honored our deal. Gotta be one of the most exciting 1-0 games in the history of baseball.

I can honestly say both. I grew up 70 miles from Columbus and a major Buckeye and Woody Hayes fan. I started at Clemson fall of 1977. I think it took 1 or 2 games max before I became a die hard lifetime Clemson fan. I could not compare the atmosphere of Buckeye stadium with the electric atmosphere of Death Valley. By the end of the year there was no question on who I was rooting for in the Gator Bowl, but I really hated to see the way Woody went out. Classic case of someone staying too long. From what I've read Charlie Bauman and Woody actually became friends at some point after that game. The game had moved on from the "four yards and a cloud of dust" offensive philosophy. I remember watching the second half when Danny Ford put Warren Ratchford in. Warren weighed about 150 lbs soaking wet, but we started running him around the ends and he was like greased lightening. The big slow OSU defense could not catch him. Woody lived and breathed football, but honestly think he would have had the moral integrity to react differently to something like the Jerry Sandusky mess.

..and JoPa. I heard another interview with Woody and he talked about how hard work would overcome a lot of difficulties in life and how he was raised. There's simply no comparison between Woody losing his temper and Paterno protecting a child molester. I have a feeling Woody would have beaten the crap outta Sandusky *on the spot* after being notified of what happened.

I totally understood your comparison that you tried to make. Not sure why so many seemed to let the forest get in front of the trees. oops - I used an analogy - so many will miss this too. Anyway, good comparison.
As for CB, the announcers totally ignored that he got punched - maybe they didn't see it. I almost jumped to the ceiling in my house screaming for a call. I was surprised that woody was allowed to remain anywhere close to the field after that crap.
And I'm not making light of the paterno thing. That's another subject IMO.

I remember that. I was watching the game in OH, with a bunch of OSU fans. I swore I saw Woody hit CB, but it happened so fast that no one else saw it, and the announcers didn't say a thing about it the rest of the game. By next morning, OSU had fired him.

it took for 1. Charlie Bauman to not slug him back and 2. Jeff Bryant to not deck him FOR Charlie since Jeff was right there beside him when it happened.....Charlie played NT at about 6'1" 230 or so and was a tough joker along with Rich Tuten who wasn't much bigger and is the strength coach with the Broncos now i think. I'll never forget that day.

the entire "body of work" of the two coaches. Without the Sandusky sewerage, Joe Pa would have won. But Paterno's "body of work" includes almost a decade and a half of covering for a child molester and, therefore enabling more God-awful child abuse.
Woody Hayes is a revered coach at OSU. Paterno will not be at PSU.
