I'll share a fishing trip story

Aug 15, 2022, 8:20 AM

when I was a kid my dad booked a fishing trip off the coast of NC. It was just a spot on the boat with about 10 others. Boat was an old WWII PT boat. A great time but it got rough. There was a partial eclipse that day so I don't if that caused it or not. It was so rough our clothes were covered in spray. So much so that our clothes were stiff as boards when they dried out.

Sounds like my 1st deep sea fishing trip with my uncle

So rough that we had to look upwards to see the top of waves as they approached and were looking straight down at the bottom of the swell as the boat was starting down the other side of the wave. I had to put my feet into slots in the side of the boat at floor level to keep from being tossed around (or overboard). These days they would cancel in such conditions.

we felt like ypu had to hold the railing or the boat would drop out from under you. I suppose according to physics it wouldnt have really but we took no chances

A similar party boat trip in the mid 70's out of Beaufort, NC. Not quite rough enough to cancel.
Every one on the boat spent the entire trip hanging over the rail barfing except one old farmer from Arkansas, who chewed tobacco and drank beer the whole time. Haven't been out of sight of land since.

My first and last boat charter...

Aug 15, 2022, 2:50 PM

When I was 12, Dad got us on a charter fishing boat out of Southport. All I remember is tossing my fruit loops over the railing, time and time again. Dad was pretty green as well, and I asked him if he couldn't get the captain to turn the boat around. Dad responded, son, I'd buy this #### boat if I could.

So I swore an oath that if God saw fit to get me off that boat, I'd never do that again. Promises kept.

Had a friend who invited me to go fishing several miles out. We left Murrells Inlet and after an hour or so, he told me we were in trouble. I looked at the horizon and saw the darkest, meanest cloud I had ever seen. He said it would be close. Never been so scared in my life. We made it to a creek near the south end of Garden City. He turned the boat to face the storm and put the throttle at full blast. Somehow we kept our position while the wind and rain pounded like crazy. After the storm passed and we were safe, I asked him how in the hell did he know what to do. He said one word: experience. Last time I ever went fishing in the ocean.
