Wassa good credit score?

Just got off the phone with a mortgage broker about a pre-approval and I can't remember if he said a perfect score was 750 or if he said that's what the average American score is.

Don't know what perfect score is

750 is a good to very good score, but highly doubt the average American is anywhere near that

Usually anything over 750 will get you the best rate.

Not sure if it helps your credit score, but it couldn't hurt to tell one more person.

I can't get above 800.

I've never been late on any payment. Ever. I have no debt, no car payments, and one credit card. That's what kills me. I bought plane tickets and a hotel room for 4 days a few weeks ago for about $3,000. I have $9,000 credit limit on my CC. My Experian credit score went down 40 points. I paid it off last week and I imagine it will go down even more. I was around 800, and now its at 760. I won't be surprised if it dips below 740 because I paid it off.

You need more credit cards, and then don't use them

Stupid answer, but true.
Your score dropped because you went above the 30% utilization rate (3,000/9,000 = 33%).

It's dumb. I don't really want another card; I don't need one. So every time I spend $1000 on my one CC it lowers my credit 10-30 points.

Used to have about $50k worth of credit cards and score was well over 800, but pared it down to your level, so now my score jumps all over the place.

throw in the drawer and never use from different companies.
I have one I put everything on but actually have 4 spread over VISA, MC, AmEx, Discover. I picked the others up over the years to get 12 months zero interest on something I couldn't pay off right away.
Shows different folks are willing to extend you credit.
But like they've said as long as you're at 750 or above don't worry.

I was hitting damm near perfect (850) for years. Like you - never been late on any payment my entire life, paid cash for cars, paid off CC's every month, no debt except mortgage, etc. But then... The Divorce, after almost 30 years of marriage. I was smart and killed off all the accounts in both our names right before I filed for divorce, as women are notorious for running up a bunch of charges and since it's in both your names, you're liable. But that also killed off all of my "oldest accounts"... like the AMEX card I'd had since 1982 before we even met, etc. Plus I had to refinance to keep the house and buy out her equity. So I was basically starting over...
And I saw my score drop under 800 because Avg Age of Open Accts was then almost zero. It's been edging back up slowly over the last 7 years, I just need another year or so. But it's a catch-22... they want to see more open accounts, but get a new CC and Avg Age goes down again. It's crazy and makes no sense...
