Lunge topic for today: Alternative careers

Jun 29, 2022, 9:55 AM

A couple of ways you could take this. What would you be doing if you got a chance to go back and start over? Would you do something else? Or, what is something that you'd really enjoy doing even if it isn't exactly realistic for you?

I'm in digital marketing now by happenstance, not design. I love it and am good at it, but I think if I could go back and "do it all again," I think I would have done law school and tax work. As a senior at Clemson I thought about law school but was more interested in con law, and just didn't think there was much of a future in that. So I didn't go to law school. My buddy did, and fell in love with tax law after working in the clinic at Georgia State. He now has a successful practice in Atlanta where he gets to browbeat the IRS into giving his clients breaks. That is some satisfying work as a libertarian.

My less conventional career would be as a welder. I've thought about reaching out to a local shop and seeing if they offered training like at night once a week, so still may be a viable hobby, and would provide a skill that keeps me useful in the post-apocalyptic paradigm where digital marketers become either food or sex dolls.

but I am not skilled in it and it would take me too long to get good. We had an independent local builder do our house and he was fantastic to work with and it reinforced that desire. Pool contractor would be fun too. Those can be boom and bust though, so maybe not so much in the next couple years.

Neighbor ended up selling his share because it became much more than just a side-hustle. I can't imagine what he cashed out his investment for, and dang if he didn't get out at the right time.

In order to climb into Corporate Mgmt in Chem industry. I got a taste of the big time corp world as VP Sales for a global company. Hated the mean politics going on and left the company when a more appealing (and better for my health and well-being) opportunity became available.
Glad I didn’t do that MBA thing!

In high school my parents pushed me towards history major bc that’s what I loved. But there isn’t much to do w a history degree right out of college and thus I got a job selling wine then got my MBA and now have a career in alcohol distribution. It’s a fine job and easy, pays well, but still wish I had went the medical route.

1. I would be a Civil War historian. My love for that time period knows no bounds and I want to breathe in every ounce of knowledge I can.

2. A teacher. Having a kid has brought out a side of me that I haven't seen in myself before. I love seeing the joy in her eye when she learns something, or accomplishes a task. I can only imagine the joy teachers get when they see the light turn on in some of their students. Yeah, I know the job is a pain in the ###, and kids are shitheads, but I could see myself being passionate about that.

Re: Lunge topic for today: Alternative careers

Jun 29, 2022, 10:11 AM

no doubt I'd work for DNR and be a forest ranger (or something similar). That's what I wanted to be growing up as long as I could remember.

I applied and was accepted into Clemson Forestry. My HS teachers implored me, browbeat me, did everything they could to convince me that I should be an engineer because that was what I apparently tested best to be and that kind of logic and reasoning came easily to me. But I resisted mightily. Then as I researched more and more, I found out what kind of money a forest ranger made (not much). Going to college and getting a degree to make $20K a year seemed a waste. So I changed majors to engineering.

Do I regret it? Kinda, but not too much. I'd had a very fulfilling career, accomplished some really cool things. But I do wish I could have spent more time out in the wilderness, the one place I feel most comfortable. If there was just some money in it <img border=">.

Jun 29, 2022, 10:47 AM

Work 24 hours, have 48 hours off. Earn an honest, blue/grey collar living and just have a general respectable job that actually contributes to society rather than being a part of the corporate/consumerist/capitalist leech mentality that defines our society and just uses, uses, uses to my benefit.

On 2 of my 3 off days, I would operate a food truck and enjoy making people happy by serving simple meats/veggies with a smile.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Hah. That food truck life.

Jun 29, 2022, 11:09 AM

I helped a buddy with his truck. The end conclusion was that there were easier ways to be poor. He went back into the corporate world.

My dad retired after 40 years as a commercial hvac tech. I didn't really appreciate the blue collar work until I got older and realized it's not what you do, but how well you do it, that gives your career its value. And it wasn't until I got older that I realized just how good my dad was at HVAC work; and not just the hands-on stuff, but also how much the customers appreciated and respected him. It was sort of cool #### moment when I realized that although I set behind a computer, and he was schlepping across 110 degree roofs, both he and I had a very similar mentality when it came to the customer. And that he loved what he did just like I loved what I do. He said he retired when he finally stopped having fun. Loved that.
