problem was the quickest remedy and usually ended up wasting money. It appears more than a couple of my Clemson brothers feel this way about having two seasons without making the playoff. I could see it being like pain killers. They relieve the pain but the danger happens when it seems OK to continue taking them after there is no pain. Pain killers can bring the pain after a certain point.

Imo, the portal is similar. The potential to seek a quickfix via portal transfers and NIL bids can help a problem but there is a danger. When the pain of having a bit of slack at a position is solved using the portal/nil there is a particular cost to the future at the position. You lose one potential recruit and often lose the transfer after one year.

If we consider that and the fact that we've lost a year of weight and skill building at that position where we've substituted a transfer/nil fix we can see some damage to the future at that position. Compound this problem several times and you have no one dependable at each position where the transfers played. The pain becomes real and the only way to cure it quickly is the portal/nil.

I don't think I'm the first person to consider this and I honestly believe our MBA head coach is long and far ahead of my thoughts about how easily a program might become a one and done. I think we'll see that manifest itself within the next few years.

TL;DR: The portal can ruin a program if it is abused for dreams of short term success, imo.

Great summary. It’s really hard to play out all the scenarios and variables. I’ve waffled all over the place on what to do next. Some of that concern is centered around falling out of the spotlight. Not because I want the spotlight, but it’s much easier to recruit while in the spotlight. The kids we are recruiting now were in early middle school when we last won our NC. Too much longer and it will be a distant memory.

desire of prospects, I do not believe anyone considers an 11-3 team a losing cause.

I'm not saying I'm satisfied just that betting against Clemson without a point spread is foolish way more often than not.

if we went full portal mode and brought in a mini-class each year, then I agree with you. However, if we have a position or 2 of need and there is a solution in the portal, go for it. That really shouldn't hurt in the long run and if it gets us to the promised land again, it's a good trade off for any future payback.

When I hurt I take pain meds.

Jan 9, 2023, 3:40 PM

I'm fully aware there is a potential for me to get myself in trouble. Pain meds do not care who you are or whether or not you are aware of the danger.

Let me explain in construction terms. A liquidated damage clause in a construction contract is such that if the building isn't built by a certain day then each day of delaying the owner's use is assess, defined in the agreement and requires the delinquent contractor to pay that sum of money to the owner to compensate his lack of ability to use the building.

For simplification let us examine an apartment building with several apartments. If course the delay was only 5 days and considering that the apartment owner didn't have rental agreements and wouldn't fill the building with tenants for two or three months, common sense would suggest the damage was slight.

Common sense doesn't work in this case. Liquidated damage is assessed at peak occupancy which may not happen for months but those five days denied the owner of five days of peak occupancy. Now, try applying that to a ### producing electricity or a building where state of the art computers are being assembled. Try it with a football team.

Back to football. Three years after your one year transfer has left you're going to be missing a seasoned senior at that position who has 3 years of practice, weight and skill development. That's the real damage. Do this 9 times and imagine what your program is going to look like in 3 to 6 years.

Do it twice in the same year at any particular position and imagine what that position on your team is going to look like in 3-5 years.

Yes, this is exaggerated but the discomfort of becoming dependent upon portal transfers is still real. I'm not saying not to keep up with the portal and take transfers but that it can often cause problems just like pain meds if it becomes your basic need.

i think you exaggerating the impact - Bama doesn't get the NCG last year without the LB and WR they got thru the portal. I don't think they will be hurting in the future b/c of it.
