or Virginia or Michigan or Indiana or another similar type of BKB school that has had recent success AND:
1) Sit the bench for awhile and hope you get to earn PT by junior year; while going to NCAA's most years
2) Come to Clemson, more times than not, start as a true freshman in the ACC and hope for a .500 career
~~WHAT SAY YE & WHY??

Guess T-Net has more computer geeks than athletes

I figured this topic would inspire more input from all those who used to play the game...
Personally, I had the opportunity to play baseball at about any D-II program in the south, but I wanted to study Architecture & that is was not offered at any school on that level back in the early '80s. I chose Clemson because of the major & Coach Wilhelm invited me to walk-on...fate, abilities & time did not align and I found a new path. I've been in education for almost 30 years now, but still wonder what may have been if I had played at a GA. Southern or UT-Chattanooga back in the day. We wish our lives away I guess...
I'm a competitor & want to win, but at some point you have to be realistic---I would chose to play at Clemson and show off my talents if I were young again. I've always told my players, that if you have the talent, the college coaches will find you. You must find a school that fits your skillset & my issue with Brownell is the players he is signing don't really fit together and maybe the reason is that BB doesn't have a firm grasp on his philosophy OR he is just taking who he can get these days.

(and not the kind some folks wear)
if i'm the kid in the hypothetical you posted, it depends on whether i know what i want to be (or can be) when i grow up..
if i think i might make it in the NBA, i'm going to a big-time basketball school. one with a record of sending guys to the pros. and sadly, that probably isn't CU. if i can earn quality minutes by my junior season, i can get scouts attention
if i know i won't make it as a pro and i'm looking for an education, again it depends on if i know what i want to do/be.
an architect or engineer? CU or NCSU would be great options.
do i want to go to law school or grad school or business school? then i'm going to pick the best school that will have me...UVA or Michigan from your list
but really it comes down to where i think i will fit in the best - in all aspects - coach, team, campus, community...
FWIW, i played basketball for a 4-A HS in NC. like you in baseball, i could have played for a small college (was contacted by a few coaches) but i wanted to go to Chapel Hill. only after i saw them did i realize i probably could have made the junior varsity squad - having played in pick-up games with most of the kids who made the team (never would have made the varsity as a walk on - there were kids i knew who did and i know they were bigger and better players than me - one kid i knew well got to play in the blue-white preseason scrimmage) i also played several pick-up games with guys on the team and even a few NBA guys and other varsity alumni; i didn't embarrass myself, but i knew i was out of my league

Also, later on, when I was workig for Coach Ellis, I got to scrimmage every once in a while with the team and it is amazing the difference from what you see on TV than in person...those guys are amazing in their skill set. From #1 to #13, even guys at Clemson are amazing athletes & terrific players in their own right.
