When you hire a mid major level coach, you get mid major level talent and results. Our guys are, outside of PJ, not ACC talent. This isn't a knock on them, they play hard. That said, Clemson will never be able to compete on the level it should until we invest in PAYING a COACH that is ACC caliber. Come off the hip, spend the money, and go get the BEST COACH possible! Our school, it's fans, and its PLAYERS deserve it! I like Brownell as a person, but is he honestly on the same level as Most of the ACC counter parts he faces? Just my opinion, so before you bash, give me your honest opinion on the state of our MBB program.
100% correct. You get what you pay for and we spend millions in football on enough coaches and staff to run a manufacturing plant. Guess what, fans gripe when we lose a football game and those same fans will gripe when we lose basketball games even if we hire Coach K out of retirement.
The problem I see is something that Brad and Oliver Purnell before him have; they can recruit "TALENTED ATHLETES" who can play hard, but IMO, they can't recruit ,and develop "BASKETBALL TALENT". Again this is just my opinion, and it is not a bash. Take Purnell for instance. Oliver had teams that could run up and down the floor all night long, but couldn't hit the broadside of a barn yard ,or really play even good defense. Oh sure he had a Terrance Oglesby and we have P.J. Hall ,both team leaders who play hard but ...look at this years team. Look at how many times they turn the ball over, either from sloppy ball handling ,or even trying to make that one extra pass. And if I had a dollar for every 5-7 minute stretch Brad's teams have had per game ( over the years) with out a basket I could have invested that money and probably contributed to his buy -out. Just saying. Another issue that pops up in these conversations is ;Well no one expects us to compete with Duke ,or UNC. Of course not, but explain how you let Ga. Tech go on a 24-2 scoring run, or lose a 23 point lead to Boston College with a local player( Brevin Galloway) whose Mom was in the stands .Did we even talk to this Kid? I wonder. Look,I don't think we can compete for the BEST COACH out there like Duke or UNC. My thinking is we need a good young Assistant coach like a Hubert Davis, or Johnny Dawkins who learned from the best, bring him ,let him pick his staff, and let him recruit and develop some good 3 or maybe a 4 star basketball talent. Most of all give him 5 years ,and don't structure some ridiculous contract unless ,and until he shows some improvement. And what is improvement; It's not losing a first round NIT game at home or finishing last in the regular season of the ACC.
