well, sometimes a fellow just needs a mental day... or two.

So, use up sick leave first and then vacation

Jan 19, 2022, 7:52 AM

Got it. We used to have a few regulars who were sick primarily on Mondays. Our employees who did that got a higher (much higher) rate of random substance testing. Turns out some of them were also poor test takers.

Once worked at a place that gave 1.25 sick days a month

Jan 19, 2022, 8:34 AM

accrued up to 60 and the gal that I shared responsibilities with would be out the 1st Friday of every month and the following Monday every 4th month. Meant I was doubled up on work a lot.

She got pregnant and started freaking out because she had no accumulated leave.
We were not sympathetic.

this month marks 11 years without a sick day for me

Jan 19, 2022, 9:10 AM

last sick day was in January of 2011.

I probably just jinxed it by bringing it up. But it's a pretty nice "accomplishment". Especially through all the crap of the last 2 years.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I hope you at least use sick time for various

appointments and stuff.

At my old gig we didn't really have sick time. They called it discretionary. We got 7 days and those would be paid out in December if not used. I would hold on tight to mine and make it out like a tiny bonus.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-aero.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

if it's just an hour or so, I don't use anything

Jan 19, 2022, 9:26 AM

boss is cool that way. He knows I make up for it staying late, travel during off hours, coming in on weekends, middle of the night, etc. when necessary. Salary people never get truly paid for all the hours they put in. I hate to think about all the "free" hours I've put in over the years.

Sick time is sacred time to me - you should NEVER use it unless you are actually physically ill. Bad karma otherwise. I'm just wired that way.

Otherwise if it's like a half day or something, I just use vacation time because I can never use it all I have so much built up.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I worked with alot of people like that at the City

Jan 19, 2022, 9:21 AM [ in reply to this month marks 11 years without a sick day for me ]

and they let you know they never took sick time any time it was brought up, even when they were sick, because there was "pressure" on them to keep coming in. Yes, Doug, your four-man waterline crew will be fine if you stay out of the shop for a day or two with the flu. But nah, Doug brings it to everyone else who takes it home to the kids just to never take a sick day. Those people also didn't have kids or the wife would always stay home with a sick kid, women's work and all.

I have a few pollen/ragweed allergies from time to time, but that's not contagious. If I had something spreadable, I'd stay out, I'm not a selfish idiot. Never had the flu.

Jan 19, 2022, 9:48 AM

being a generally healthy person tends to draw strange reactions, not sure why. It's like you are somehow obligated to be sick and it upsets people if you aren't. What am I supposed to do?

I'm just fortunate that I've been healthy most all my life, and I DO appreciate that every day.

What is this "All" your PTO?

Jan 19, 2022, 9:12 AM

It's tough to run out of it when you have unlimited.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Being in a situation with unlimited AND really being

Jan 19, 2022, 9:15 AM

able to take it seems to be rare.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-aero.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We're all scared to take it now.

Jan 19, 2022, 9:16 AM

Its BS.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We're all required to take a minimum of 3 weeks

Jan 19, 2022, 11:32 AM

at my new company, and encouraged to take more.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They did that with us a few years ago.

Jan 19, 2022, 9:15 AM [ in reply to What is this "All" your PTO? ]

Couched it as some kind of big benefit; basically, all it meant was they didn't have to pay anyone out for anything when they got canned.

And we have "unlimited PTO" (but please don't take more than 3 weeks a year, and we have to record all of it).

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I have yet to be denied any of my unlimited PTO and that

Jan 19, 2022, 9:16 AM

included a 2 week trip last summer.

There were some beach trips in there as well, but often I would work on my laptop at the beach until lunch, then drink the rest of the day.

2024 purple level memberringofhonor-greenr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't know anyone who has taken 2 weeks, much less

Jan 19, 2022, 9:19 AM

3, so I'm not sure what they would do if we took more than 3 weeks.

With everyone quitting their jobs, ironically, now they are afraid that everyone will quit. People are dropping like flies around here. After I move, I hope to the next.

This company is bi-polar sometimes.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I took 2 weeks when my daughter was born

Jan 19, 2022, 10:20 AM

When I asked for two weeks, boss said, "you can have one, then work from home the second".

The day she was born, I emailed by boss at 4 in the morning to tell him I was taking two weeks and he didn't push back.

Jan 19, 2022, 10:16 AM

My boss gives me absolute #### when I do call in sick. One of the days, I came into work and spent an hour vomiting in the bathroom. Boss still wasn't okay with me leaving. I also had hand, foot, and mouth last year and my boss said he was fine with me taking one day off, but not two.

Our PTO days do not roll over or get paid out, so I left a week of PTO on the table because my boss told us on December 1 that we were not allowed to take PTO in December if we had not already asked off.

When I say that my boss has killed my desire to ever get it

Jan 19, 2022, 11:38 AM

I mean it. I do every single thing he does outside of marketing and being the "face" of the company. His policy is that no one other than him signs plans in this office, so theres not a single motivation in the world to get it. I never want that responsibility. The only motivation to get it is to move laterally at this point.

most of the knowledge, just sit for it. If your #### employer doesn't give you a bonus or raise for obtaining your PE, it's really time to move on to another firm.

I could also get you hired at my company if you want.
