I don't understand how Tajh ran the wrong way on the fumble

Oct 22, 2013, 10:20 PM

Where was he supposed to run?

Watch at the :38 mark

Can someone explain it?

From the way I understand it...

It was a run right with the quick outlet pass option, which if you look at the formation and how the WRs play it, looks to be legit.

Either way, he should have hung onto the ball***

It was a screen pass to the right side

Oct 22, 2013, 10:37 PM

Should work great against the corner blitz. Tajh throws that ball to Humphries and he probably picks up 20 yards.

This is actually the first time ive seen the replay.

Really bad play by Tajh. It's easy to be critical from the couch, but as a 3 year starting QB on a team that runs that play 10 times a game, I don't really understand how he got that wrong.

I mean the play is either hand the ball off or throw the bubble screen. You can't throw a bubble screen to the one receiver side. Should be simple.

Anyway he certainly isn't the only one to play bad that day, we just all need to move on.

Looks to me like he wouldn't have had time to make a throw. Would've been sacked or swatted down or intercepted. I think he made a bad read and should have handed it off. McDowell could have sidestepped the pile and picked up yards. Of course in the end Tajh should have tucked it.

No he was wrong from the beginning

Oct 22, 2013, 10:53 PM

He should have never had his back to the blitzer. The handoff should have made that guy decide either to take the QB or the RB.

Its pretty much the same play as the first play in this video

So you're saying he had McDowell lined up wrong? Or McDowell ran to the wrong side too? The only way Tajh can have his back to the other side is if McDowell runs to take the handoff on the right side.

Nevernind I see. The way McDowell an tajh were lied up Tajh could have gone either way.

2nd play of the game vs. Syracuse

Oct 22, 2013, 11:11 PM [ in reply to Re: No he was wrong from the beginning ]

TE is lined up on the other side, but it is virtually the same play. And if you watch the rest of the video, you will see Tajh always runs to the side of the play action.

Exactly. I don't get the "he ran the wrong way crap". There's only one bing that Tajh Boyd did wrong on that play and that's that he didn't hand it off. He hands if off he doesn't need to tuck the football. Hot rod picks up yards.

Tell me how what I said was wrong? Are you swing McDowell wouldn't have picked up yards?

Really? I'm just asking for an explanation because it doesn't makes sense from the video. No need to be a jerk.

I'm not sure if mcdowell was supposed to run to tajh's left or not, but if he runs to his right he can pick up the blitz and the bubble screen gets completed for an easy first down. However, if the play is setup for mcdowell to run to tajh's left, which it appears it is, then nothing boyd could have done with the screen to his right due to the blitz. Either way, shouldn't have lost the ball..

Also, lets just move on, everyone knows they played poorly, and lets get out there and pummel maryland

If you look closely, you will see McDowell's 1st step is...

Oct 22, 2013, 11:47 PM

to the right. The snap came in to Tajh a little wide right and Rod then adjusts himself to where Tajh turned.

I was curious, so I watched every pass play from WF, Cuse, and Georgia (with the help of youtube of course) and every time we ran that bubble screen, we threw the ball to the same side the run fake was on.

The yellow lines show where the linemen/WRs are going. The green line shows who Tajh should be reading, the red line shows who Tajh is actually looking at.

Nice job with the diagram Tigerstyle

But I disagree with your analysis.

The o-line is blocking down to their right and this leaves the DE on the left side free. It appears to me that Tajh is looking at the correct read on that DE.....the DE is free and forced to make a decision and Tajh is reading what the DE will do.

You are saying Tajh should be reading the corner who is coming on a blitz. You really don't see plays setup to make reads on a freed up blitzer.

I think the play was doomed before the snap because Tajh and/or McDowell did not pick up the corner blitz pre-snap.

Someone in this thread mentioned they rewatched this play everytime it was run in every game this season and Tajh made the throw to the side the play was going every time. If the casual fan can identify this tendency then surely FSU coaches saw it and made a great blitz call to Tajh's backside.
