and is familiar with options available for a husband who cannot access the phone of a deceased spouse? Payments are still being made for its purchase in addition to the monthly plan. Thought I would try a shot in the dark here before venturing to a Verizon store or calling customer service which I don't prefer.

You could try the messenger option on the VW website. You simply type your information vice having to talk to those troglodytes.

Don’t work for them but am unfortunately a customer. Might as well bite the bullet and go to the store. Call and chat reach people who can’t spell Verizon (and a guy named Fred with a strong Indian accent). Stores have the smartest guys, and the one in Clemson is WAY better than the one in Anderson.

The store is definitely my preference versus at least a 20 minute wait to talk to a CSR whose first language isn't English.

best option. My wife just went through that with her deceased son. She sent Apple the paperwork. Thirty days later, they allowed her to change the password so she could get to his messages and photos.
T-Mobile was unsympathetic and not helpful at all.
By the way...if YOU lost your spouse please accept my prayers for your strength and comfort.

Thanks. Will keep that option in mind. It was my wife, a 73 grad. Very much appreciate your prayers. Have been praying for strength and wisdom to carry on in the most meaningful way.

sorry for your loss, if you are trying to unlock the phone Verizon cannot help you with that. Lock codes are not something that they will have access to or record of, all they can give you instructions for is how to erase the phone to set a new lock code later.
For any access to info you'll want to contact Apple if its an iPhone and Google if it is android. From experience, both routes will require proof of purchase and ownership.
No need to call Verizon or take a trip to the store. Hope this helps.

Sorry for your loss. Prayers for strength for you. My mother in law recently passed away and we went to the Verizon store with a copy of the death certificate and they cancelled/stopped everything. Were very understanding, helpful, and empathetic. Peace to you my brother.

So sorry for your loss. Your best option is going to a Verizon store and discussing in person. I had a similar issue and had to do so via their customer service number, which was an extremely long wait. In early 2019, all local stores were closed due to Covid and their customer service service line was my only option. As I’m sure you have already discovered, doing anything either in person or via phone will require you bring/send a copy of the Death Certificate, which can be painful, having to do so over and over again. Prayers for you and your family and am so sorry for your loss.

Good Luck

Like others have said. Unlocking the phone/iCloud content is an Apple/Google/etc issue. I was lucky. My wife had all her passwords attached to her will. There might be information on the iCloud/Google/etc login page through a computer web browser
As far as closing the account go to a store. Before you go call and make sure it is a corporate store and not an affiliate store (I wasted multiple trips and hours with an affiliate before they finally told me I was at the wrong place) take both the death certificate and the paper confirming you are the estate’s personal representative
The estate will have to pay off the phone but you should be able to close the cell account right away
I’m so sorry. Dealing with all these people who only know how to sell not cancel is very painful. Just when you think you are done, something will pop out of the woodwork to be dealt with and hurt all over again.

And if an Iphone or laptop (Apple), you can visit an Apple Support store and have both passwords reset. Unsure of your location but there’s one just off Main in downtown Greenville and one in the Haywood Mall.
