Don't move to Rock Hill

Mar 18, 2015, 9:03 PM

Rock Hill is becoming crime infested. I'd rank the area in this order for living. 1.) Fort Mill/Tega Cay 2.) Lake Wylie 3.) York

Clemson doesn't care about basketball....as evidenced by Brown-L getting 14 years.

I'm actually flexiable on location but was wanting to stay on the South Carolina side of Charlotte. All input is very appreciated!

years ago we moved to Tega Cay for 1 year and then to RH for 4 years while working in Charlotte. Fort Mill is a quality school if you have kids in HS. Fort Mill is fine too. I thought RH was fine, but that was 10 years ago. I was close to shopping, dining, and just about everything I needed. Not bad really. BUT - things in Charlotte are very pricey IMO.

Good luck - and keep those tarholes quiet.

btw: RH is mostly populated with coots.

Depends on where your company is relocating. Fort Mill, Rock Hill, Lake Wylie or Clover are nice and pretty easy to get into Charlotte. You will just need to learn the traffic. If your job is on the University side/Huntersville area, you are going to have a drive from these areas mentioned.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If you're dying go ahead and move to Rock Hill

Mar 18, 2015, 11:14 PM

you'll live longer, cause every day there is like a friggin' eternity.

Take with a grain of salt, I lived there 20 yrs ago while finishing my last two years of HS.

Born and raised in Fort Mill and have been back in Fort Mill for 10+ years. Also lived in Rock Hill for a while. So much depends on your situation. If single and not looking to get hitched anytime soon, I would live in uptown Charlotte. If married with kids or kids will be coming soon, I would recommend Fort Mill, Clover, or York...in that order. Fort Mill is getting crowded but has the better schools (near the top in the state) but Clover and York are not bad either...plus, there is more affordable land in the latter two if that is important to you. Under no circumstance could I ever recommend Rock Hill to anyone. No offense to anyone who lives there....any questions, Ill be glad to help.

south carolina as well as terrible traffic to Charlotte and back, PLEASE come to Rock Hill. If you have any athletes in your family, please move a little farther west to the little hamlet of York. Also, do you like meth? If so, Clover is for you. Do you think you are better than everyone else? Yes, you say? Well let me show you the Tega Cay / Fort Mill / Lake Wylie area.

Move to Hickory Grove.

Well, those of us in Fort Mill ARE better than the rest of you....I kid, I kid. Born and raised there and it won't be the few of us left who think this...now anyone moving into the area in the past 10 years could easily fit that description.

I think everyone could help you better if you provided more info on your situation.

Where is your job located? Uptown Charlotte? Lake Norman? University? Fort Mill?

Are you single or do you have a family?

I moved to the Lake Norman area 1.5 years ago and love it. But I both live and work here, living less than 1 mile from my work. LKN traffic is horrid though because the interstate development has lagged way behind the growth in the area. A commute from Rock Hill to this area would take an hour at least and would likely cause you to have health issues. Commuting from Rock Hill to University would also be really bad. I guess the commute to Uptown would be doable, but would still probably take at least 30 minutes and be very high traffic.

I don't personally have too much experience with Rock HIll, but the impression I get is it's a good place to save money on housing for families who may work in Charlotte, but you lose a lot of the amenities of Charlotte. Depending on your lifestyle, that may or may not matter to you. As a single person, I don't think I would enjoy living anywhere on the SC side of the border. But if I were married with kids, maybe it would make sense for me. It all depends on the situation.

Overall, there's are lots of great areas of Charlotte and bad areas. Just like any big city. Traffic in this area is way worse than any city in SC so just keep that in mind when choosing where to live. I would not personally recommend commutting anymore than 15 miles as it could be horrible.

Come to Clover/Lake Wylie. 20 minutes from Charlotte. One of the best 4A school districts in the state. Great little community with access to everything

Rock hill isn't bad but if you have kids their schools get

Mar 19, 2015, 12:56 PM

bad ratings. WE moved to the lake wylie area which is just west of fort mill. Little bit less traffic and congestion that fort mill has acquired in the last 5 years. Rock hill you can get more bang for your buck and there are some nice homes close to Winthrop that I would love to have lived in b/c of Winthrop and the huge parks out that way but we have small kids and the schools get rating like real bad. Clover and Fort Mill schools are among the best in the state and are rated like 9 and 10 while rock hill is like 2's and 3's. But if you don't care about that kind of stuff the Thrill isn't that bad of a place.

I'm married with no kids. I was thinking the RH area simple because the wife is taking a new management job in pineville nc, she will be making that drive 5 times a week. She's the driving force on the location. Im a pilot so my commute would be to CLT airport, which I'm not really worried about it. Probably only staying in the area 18 months or so, then back to the upstate! We live in easley now and like it, lol. Rural area is fine don't need to be uptown. A condo or small house is all we need. Thanks for all the replies!

FOR THOSE PURPOSES FORT MILL IS YOUR BEST SHOT. CLOSE TO PINEVILLE AND PRETTY MUCH STRAIGHT SHOT TO AIRPORT. TRY SOMEWHERE AROUND BAXTER VILLAGE. LOTS OF THINGS TO DO THERE.

Re: job relocating to Charlotte area...

Mar 19, 2015, 2:33 PM

^Gotta agree with this post. Look into Fort Mill area.

Things you'll need to know:
1) morning commute up I-77 is usually backed up starting around Carowinds Blvd or further back toward Rock Hill...so your commute to the airport would take a little bit longer than expected until you get off on I-485 Inner Loop to go toward the airport if you plan to go by interstates. However, Hwy 160 (which goes through Fort Mill) also goes out past Arrowood Rd and does actually cross over I-485 on the airport side, so you would have that alternate to get to 485.
2) For your wife, if working in Pineville, she'd just need to get on Carowinds Blvd, then jump on Rockhill-Pineville Rd (Hwy 51)...this becomes Pineville-Matthews Rd after going through the little town section of Pineville.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If he's a pilot he won't necessarily be going to the airport

Mar 19, 2015, 3:04 PM

during rush hour.

Either Ft Mill or Indian Land would be ideal. deroberts mentioned Baxter Village (I-77 at Hwy 160) which is popular with the younger crowd.

yeah, true...wasn't thinking about a pilot likely not being in the true rush hour time frames.

Ah, you have much to learn grasshopper. I would never ever get on highway 51 during any rush hour. Take the shortcut through Regent Park...brings you out right at the mall in Pineville and also a good back way into Ballantyne.

find some where fun to live. Not nesseciarly Uptown. Right outside of uptown in Dilworth or a little further south. Not bad commutes for both of you.

Mar 19, 2015, 7:36 PM [ in reply to Re: job relocating to Charlotte area... ]

If only staying 18 months and no kids...I agree with others who recommend just renting something in/near uptown Charlotte. Your wife will be going against traffic in the mornings and you are maybe 20 minutes from the airport. If you want something less urban...try Baxter Village in Fort Mill...or rent something out by the lake in Lake Wylie. I personally wouldn't buy anything for just an 18 month stay unless you are going to fix something up and flip it.

I live in Lake Wylie, love it!
