... have killed our progress.

We have made incremental progress each week, but the injuries seem to happen every time we take a step in the right direction.

We take a couple of steps forward then take a step back every week this season.

Bockhorst getting hurt just as soon as we’d settled him into guard alongside Rayburn at Center is a prime example.

Getting Ngata back and then losing him again is another.

Not to mention the fact that Ross has apparently had a broken foot all season.

We were a work in progress before the injuries. The injuries have killed our progress.

TODAY??

NOT TOMORROW, TODAY? WHO? Put your names on this board. Perhaps you already have. I just haven’t tried to correlate your userid with general coaching criticisms on this board.

I will assume that you will start with Elliott, right? Then, who is next on your list? Caldwell? Venables? Swinney?

I’m just in the mood at this time to really vent some frustration here on TNet about the criticism of this coaching staff.

I was in Charlotte back in September for that pathetic excuse of an offensive showing by DJU. I was screaming like an idiot at what I was seeing DJU do, and I was stunned.

You can use all of the “talent excuses” you want to, to justify what you would consider “superior-talent-hiding-bad-coaching over the past seven years, but the RESULTS over these past seven years do NOT come because of RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS over GOOD COACHING. I’ll NEVER buy into that.

Have I screamed at the TV questioning a series of play calls? You bet I have, and I listen to every interview that TE gives posted on TNet. He does not sound like someone that needs to be shown the door after this disappointing year.

And, DON’T throw ESPN commentary in my face about the Clemson coaching staff needing to be shown the door. Those ESPN idiots want nothing more than to see CDS, and all that he stands for, not just to fail miserably, but to see him and every coach on his staff CRUSHED into oblivion. That you can take to the bank.

Yes…I have read the comments on this board about how Kiffen and Leach can go out and take a bunch of 2* & 3* and within three months having a college team that could wipe out the glory days of the New England Patriots with Brady in his prime. My response to that is: BS!

I had my doubts about Dabo Swinney when he took over 12 years ago, but he has PROVEN he can coach and win at the HIGHEST level of this game and put together a staff that has the same vision, commitment, and dedication to excellence. CDS can stand toe-to-toe with ANYONE at the highest level of this game, and HE WILL NOT QUIT, HE WILL NOT TIRE OUT, HE WILL NOT GIVE UP!

CDS will have this team back in the TOP ECHELON of NCAA college football, regardless of how game rules, NIL, transfer portal, or WHATEVER other crap is thrown at him by those powers that seek to destroy this game from within.

I believe TOTALLY in CDS and whatever coaching changes that MAY, and I say, MAY, come with the next season.

That’s it!

ITiger, that is the post of the day, the week, the month, and perhaps the year.

You put it all into perspective. I'm a huge Dabo fan and would want no other head coach. I too have been frustrated with some play calling this year (and other years), but I trust that Dabo knows more about college football and the state of his players than I could ever know.

Nov 15, 2021, 11:42 PM

You'd have a point, if it were just this season. But the offense has had major issues for several years now, or have you forgotten us getting steamrolled in 4 of our last 5 big games? As it is, your post is completely nonsensical, as you take a complaint at assistant coaches then get on a pedestal about Dabo, farming thumbs from people who thumb up every post that's sunshine and rainbows. But you asked for a list of coaches I want fired, okay, I'll give them to you in order.

1. Caldwell - Good man who's just a bit past the game at this point. There's no excuse for our offensive line being as bad as it's been, and us producing virtually no NFL talent there since he took over. He did well with the group of guys in 2018, but it's been on a steep decline since.
2. Streeter - Worst QB in Clemson history statistically who's asked to coach NFL QB potential. Every QB we've had has regressed under him, except Deshaun, who got outside coaching.
3. Elliott - I would prefer just to demote Elliott to tight ends and keep him on staff. He's a good recruiter and seems like a good guy. But that's not realistic, and he's just not good enough to call plays for Clemson. Our offensive scheme has been very poor for years now, and when Jeff Scott left, it plummeted even more. It is inexcusable to have our offense as one of the five worst in the P5. Even more so when that person is paid like a super-elite coach.

That's pretty much it for me. I know a lot of people would include Grisham, but I think he's earned the benefit of the doubt thus far, as he's coached some great receivers, and I think our receivers would have a lot less drops if they didn't have a QB who tried to break their hands every pass. I think Spiller is doing a great job with the running backs, as we have three great backs who could start and I'd be pleased. Dabo has absolutely earned the benefit of the doubt, though he needs to adapt his model because college football is different now with the portal and NIL. Venables is the #1 reason for our success, and he's done an amazing job this year fielding a top 10 scoring defense with a ton of starters out and his defense having to play so much since the offense can't get a first down.

Re: Who precisely do you want fired from the coaching staff…

Nov 16, 2021, 8:01 AM

So you have some what of a point but you’re the typical fan who thinks they know everything so let’s humble ya.

How can you possibly say Streeter is a bad coach? That’s so incredibly ignorant. Boyd, Watson, Bryant & Lawrence. I just listed 2 1st round generational talents (DW & TLaw) Boyd was a great QB there were just other issues with the team & Kelly Bryant was a 3* prospect who was able to lead Clemson to an 11-1 regular season, a conference championship & a playoff birth. No he wasn’t a prolific passer but he was just a 3* so I cut him slack there

I agree with you on the o-line coaching needing to be changed up, it’s so evident that the o-line is virtually the biggest weakness on the team.

For anyone who says Grisham needs to be fired you’re a moron. Clemson has literally be dubbed WRU so idk how you can possibly think that about Grisham. Sounds awfully similar to the Bama fans calling for Saban to be fired after a loss.

And Dabo hasn’t “earned the benefit of the doubt” Dabo is the best coach Clemson has ever had & the 2nd best coach in the country (I do not say that lightly, Saban is probably the GOAT & Dabo is the only one close to his success) this program is in great hands with him.

If Elliot does leave, the Clemson OC position will probably be the most sought after job in the country. More than a lot of programs HC positions.

Re: Who precisely do you want fired from the coaching staff…

Nov 16, 2021, 8:25 AM

I don't think I know everything, though I do think I know a lot. I played college ball and coached at the high school level. I could have turned coaching into a career but I had a different route in life.

Let's talk Streeter, since people have a new-found desire to defend him, presumably from his latest heroics. First, at the time Tajh Boyd was playing, Streeter was coaching at Richmond and hadn't been at Clemson in 9 years. Not sure how you can credit Streeter with that, considering he didn't come back to Clemson until December 2014, a year after Boyd left. Do agree Tajh was very good though, and we might be undefeated with him as QB (though we'd get our clocks cleaned in the playoffs). Kelly Bryant, as you said, was not a good passer. But interesting enough, if you look at his statistics, he played progressively worse as his career at Clemson progressed. When he went to Missouri, they got him a passing coach to develop his mechanics. He still wasn't world beating, but I find it interesting that his two best seasons were before Streeter began coaching him and after he went to a new QB coach. Trevor was slated as a first round draft pick when he was a sophomore in high school. It really didn't matter what he did, he was going to the NFL. But while he learned the Clemson offense better and improved his instincts, his passing mechanics regressed every year Streeter continued to coach him. Deshaun Watson was considered a superstar before he stepped on campus and hired a private passing coach his freshman year. He did not regress. And let's not forget Hunter Johnson and Chase Brice. You can safely say neither of them improved their passing at Clemson, and yet Chase looks like a different person this year after learning from a real QB coach. Similarly, Zerrick Cooper improved after he left Clemson. So we've got 5 QBs who worked under Streeter who didn't improve from Streeter's coaching and/or improved only once they left Clemson. The only exception was the QB who ignored Streeter and hired his own person.

I do think the offensive line is our biggest weakness. Agreed. Good offensive lines can cover up a ton of deficiencies in the skill positions and allow for consistency. I've been concerned that we seemed aimed the other way, hoping for explosive, big plays, and if they don't happen, we're helpless.

Agreed on Grisham.

I don't know that I would say Dabo is #2, though I agree he's been one of the most successful (no one's been close to Saban's success though). Dabo does have to evolve his coaching though. What made us successful won't keep us successful, especially in a game where no NFL-caliber player is going to be "All In." NIL crushes that.

I think that's right. Clemson's OC positions should be highly coveted with the talent on the roster. That's why we should strike while the iron is hot.

I would say it turned out pretty well! The way the offense preformed some days, I would say it was fantastic to have a great defense. I not sure what the people want from the coaches, but I do know some will never be happy. Do we know they were blowing smoke up our back side, sure. Do the players know it,sure but what do you expect them to say, lewd the offensive sucks, looks good for the public and recruiting.

Awful, bad, average , good, amazing.

On the surface, you have to rate it as good. Ten wins is a benchmark that many programs would gladly take and nothing to scoff at. Conference championships and playoff appearances are difficult to win and we’ve been other worldly dominant at achieving those things.

When you dig deeper, I’d rate it as bad. Our defense had the chance at being elite but injuries and being put on the field too long and too often have taken some of their shine. The offense…… well we all know. The fact we’re not ranked in the top 25 speaks volumes.

Frustrating. If we finish 10-3 I’ll be relieved we ground out a respectable record across college football. But I’ll never feel great about or forget some of the macro issues that plagued this team. And there were a lot of them. The missed opportunity hurts; with a defense this good, we should’ve at least taken care of the ACC title and been in peripheral playoff discussions the way Michigan (really?) or Notre Dame are currently. We’re not even ranked right now. That’s embarrassing.

Fwiw, if somehow we win out and back door our way into the ACC title game and win that one, that would be something I’d feel good about. Sure, the ACC isn’t great this year and we will have needed far more help than we should have needed. But there’d be an undeniable resilience factor the players and coaches could build on if this team somehow wins the ACC. By no means am I holding my breath for this, but that would be something I’d personally get excited about.

Unreal due to number of injuries and roster and lineup issues.
Not a good reflection of Tony E in terms of adjustment, preparation and development to create improvement.
Consistent and impressive for Coach V
Creating a crossroads moment for Dabo in terms of off-season decisions.

The 2021 season reflects unusually bad luck with injuries and absences.

The 2020, 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, and 2015 seasons reflect astounding good luck with regard to lack of injuries and absences.

The 2014 season had some bad luck due to injury (esp. D.Watson's ACL tear)

2021 is worse than 2014 as far as injuries, and 2014 had far better ready-to-go QBs (D.Watson as the starter and C.Stoudt as a capable back-up).

So with the not-ready-for-prime time QB situation in 2021 and the enormous rash of injuries / absences, if we finish 10-3 then it will represent Dabo & Co's best coaching job.

Oh yes, and I'll be thrilled with the season.

Great Coaches of the Legendary Variety have the knack of adjusting their system to fit the personnel they have. For instance, Bear Bryant changing to the Wishbone after a lousy season and winning 3 more NATY's. Barry Switzer abandoned the wishbone after a couple of NATY's and went to the I formation because of Marcus Dupre and won another NATY.

BV does a fantastic job of this with our defense. He always manages to patch a great defense together no matter who is on the field. On the Offensive side of the ball........not so much. They keep trying to pound round pegs into square holes and refuse to change because "it is what we have always done with great success." Bad answer, Coach!!

Let's look at the goals Coach states every year:

1) Win the first game - Lost
2) Win the home opener - Won
3) Win the Division - Not over yet but will not happen
4) Win the ACC - Will not happen
5) Win the state - We we beat SC State, the other USC TBD (Boy i hope we win)
6) Go to the CFP - Will not happen
7) Win the Bowl Game - TBD

What have i missed or gotten wrong?

Defense - A (every game except Louisville C+)

Special teams
Punting - B
FGs - A (except for the one game )
Kick returns - C
Punt returns - C

Offense
SC State (B),
UConn (C),
GT/BC/Cuse/Louisville/FSU (D)
UGA/NC State/Pitt (F)

Those are not Dabo’s stated annual goals. There are only 5:

1. Win the opener
2. Win the division
3. Win the state
4. Win the conference
5. Win the closer.

He has repeated these over and over. The only one that is decided is that we did not win the opener. All of the others are still possible.

10-3… and the last 3 down to the wire. Then I would rate the season as miraculous. How many teams win that many games that are that close in a season?

On a scale of 1-10, with 10 being my pride in my team… 9. And I’ll hope for an undefeated season in 2022.

10 wins is an achievement, but who are we kidding here? Almost every win has been eeked out and we all feel and know that they have been hanging onto threads. The offense has looked like they are the second string still in spring practice. The defense is superb and is the only reason they are winning despite the many injuries to that unit.

If there were ever an "eye test", this is the year. 10 wins at this point would be awesome. Scraping by against much lesser teams and occasionally playing like the offense is playing football for the first time does not pass the eye test and is where I get disappointed. I don't expect to stay at the very top of the mountain every year, but just didn't expect such an offensive drop this quick, this year. Here's hoping for 10-3!

A struggle.

But another 10 win season to add to the banner!

I would say finishing 10-3 is something to be proud of regardless of preseason expectations. A lot of programs would be very happy with double digit wins and only Alabama has had more success than Clemson in the CFP era, every other program would kill for that success.

So with that being said I’m not to spoiled to enjoy a 10-3 season & be proud of the boys.

Also I don’t think this season is any indicator of how next season will be

10 wins is always a good season. Not a great season, but a good season. Before the extra fluff game, I look at it as a 9 win season of old. Solid year.

At this point, I'm good with a 10-3 season. I hope it happens.
