if a shakeout takes place to protect themselves and leaves NC State, Wake and Duke in the dust to sink.

That does sound logical. So would this eventually end in the ACC disolving completely? Or will it still exsit?

The ACC would still exist. The schools left behind would want to keep it going to collect the buyout money. The remaining Big East would merger in to make a good basketball conference.
