TNET: As good as 2018? Swinney thinks 2021 defense has the potential to be great

As good as 2018? Swinney thinks 2021 defense has the potential to be great

Clemson’s defense in 2018 was one of the best in recent memory, putting up the kind of numbers that are hard to replicate in today’s game. Dabo Swinney thinks the defense in 2021 has the chance to be just as special, thanks to some lumps taken over the past few seasons.

I do believe we will be very, very special this year. Dabo will use the "no respect card" to its fullest, and we definitely have plenty of talent and depth. Let them talk abou ugay and OSU, AL, etc. all they want to, but we should be very, very special this season, and don't be surprised if we bring home another "Natty".

To your point, we play UGA (I don't understand the hate speech part but I know many fans hate Georgia), however my concern is we won't really have a lot of competitive games outright. That's OK, but they'll be talking about Alabama & Ohio State for legitimate reasons & likely not so much with us after the UGA game for the opposite reasons. As a result, things like the Heisman, for example, are simply out of our reach this year (again).

To the point of the article, though, that gives us all the opportunity in the world to destroy these defensive stats. I'd love it!

You must not live around them. If you did, you'd understand the, as you call it, "hate speech".

I do live around & know plenty of UGA fans here in Seneca, that's for sure.

I think we owe UGA itself enough respect for playing us this year instead of Wyoming to not use homosexual slurs, but I admit, I suppose that's personal for me & Coach Swinney.

I see plenty of opportunity to beat these defensive stats with our 2021 schedule for sure. UGA might be a kink, but the rest is smooth sailing. I say pad the stats deliberately, make the Ferrari purr. Having guys like Skalski and Turner back, for example, should help us destroy at least 10 of our 12 opponents.

The 2018 Defense was very special. The DL was exceptional. And IS11 and TM1 were studs but got little love with worthy Power Rangers on the prowl.

A central theme for this 2021 Defense is Skalski and Turner are strengths vs. the run and mediocre ACC competition and weaknesses vs. talented receivers and pro-level playoff competition. This presents a challenge for B.V. in the playoffs and in the development of younger, faster, and much higher recruited Tiger players with NFL potential. The DL is definitely back, and LB's & DB's are TBD. I hope to see Booth and true frosh Wiggins at CB with Davis & Greene in rotation. And Carter, Mukuba, Zanders, Mickens & Turner will have to fight it out at S.

It will be interesting to see how B.V. deals with these challenges in 2021 as tough, experienced & slow players Skalski and Turner build their coaching credentials in their 6th year on the team, and Jeremiah Trotter and Barrett Carter potentially watch them play and lose a season.

I agree, I think players like Nolan Turner and Jake Venables have their deficiencies masked by mediocre competition and and our dominant D Line. I'm really hoping that some of the younger guys can take over at some point. UGA will be targeting Turner all night and he doesn't have the athleticism to deal with it. Players like Mukuba, Mickens, and Carter, while young and inexperienced, should have the athleticism to match up with elite WRs.

You're right about UGA, but we don't have to beat UGA more than we have to rely on another conference winner or Notre Dame losing a game for us to control our destiny to the playoff again this year. As long as we're competitive against UGA and another conference champion loses a game, we'll be back in control of our destiny to the CFP.

I agree with this so much. Great points.

I think as long as another conference champ or Notre Dame has a loss we'll be able to then control our destiny to the CFP. How prepared will we be? Impossible to say, to your point. But playing against teams good enough for the playoff is what I absolutely crave to see from elite teams like Clemson. I just don't see anything to really test us after UGA, and since that's the first game of the season it's not truly indicative of the team's performance by nature.

This team will likely be special, for sure. I just hope we get the chance to see it.

A great defense with a new starting QB, I have seen the results of this same picture before. Go Tigers, and get the #4 natty in 2021!!!!

Let's hope they all come back for a fourth year. Then we can make a comparison.

If the front four are anywhere close to the 2018 Power

Apr 17, 2021, 5:03 PM

Rangers, they will make the rest of the defense look much better, just as those guys did. :)

The schedule is perfect for the defense to be good. Come out of the Georgia game and the next 11 are maybe not cupcakes but pretty close.

Similar to last year, we looked great until we met some real talent.

Re: TNET: As good as 2018? Swinney thinks 2021 defense has the potential to be great

Good point, albeit last year we has some significant competition, including the most-watched ACC game of all time. We were ironically blessed with the schedule changes in 2020 due to the pandemic.

This year, unfortunately we're back to likely not being able to control our own destiny to the CFP until another conference champ loses (& ND, albeit their schedule is maniacal) & the Heisman is certainly out of our reach by nature. I only wish we could do more about it, but it's not Clemson's fault & our players deserve those opportunities, IMO.

I don't see this happening. Sorry, just keepin' it real, but I hope I'm wrong.

Do you have any specific concerns?

Apr 17, 2021, 10:54 PM

I mean, matching up to our 2018 defense is a tall order. We could be a very, very good defense without hitting that mark.

Like you, I hope we get there!

Indeed! Have watched Wake, Syracuse, and BC games over

Apr 18, 2021, 10:16 AM

the past few weeks. Lots of scorched DBs for sure. Those teams were not very good, but still showed a weakness that o14o was able to seriously exploit. They also showed that Amari and Cornell can play!

We should be better than last year but let's not sell those 2018 guys short.
