Drinking out of other people's used cups, aka trash.
This should go over well post-COVID.
In a press release issued Tuesday, the company detailed plans to achieve its latest “planet positive goal” by encouraging customers to bring their own personal cups to be refilled, or by offering communal cups that guests would be instructed to return upon their next visit.
Those communal cups would then be professionally cleaned at the store and provided to other Starbucks customers, who would in turn repeat the process.

and are cleaned and reused in-house.
Starbucks is about 90% to-go from what I see.
Restaurants don't give you their sit-down glasses and plates when you get food to-go.

but is this any different than any other restaurant that reuses plates and silverware and glasses? If it runs through the industrial dishwasher in the back, isn't it really the same thing?

not sure their plastic cups can take the required heat to properly sanitize. But maybe they can.
I don't care either, I cannot stand coffee. Never even been in a Starbucks. But I do see their cups scattered everywhere.

but I just can't see people saving and returning cups that they have used. They gonna keep them in a sack in the back seat of their car? You gonna walk around half a day with an empty cup in your hand at the outdoor festival so you can return it?
You remember soda bottle deposits and longneck beer case deposits? Remember how hard that was?
Maybe they have the logistics figured out. But I'm afraid our disposable society ain't gonna change, we're too far down the road for that.

Didn't read the article, so maybe someone will explain it to me.
Since drinking coffee leads to excess urine output, then are the commodal cups save the planet by being used twice ... once as a coffee dispenser and once for coffee recycling.
Time to be especially aware of any new Starbucks flavored coffees such as Seattle Gold or Honey Amber.
