... on Sirius/XM today:
"Clemson is one of those programs that MUST go hard after players in the portal or take a chance on getting left behind." He went on to say that it's a new world and "no one, not even the Dabos or Sabans in this game will be able to keep up by simply recruiting HS players and developing them." Saying a kid that's had college experience and is in the portal is a far greater asset and a lower risk than most kids coming from the high school level.
Rick Neuheisel agreed and said starting this year, the entire thought process of recruiting, developing and retaining players has changed and become a whole new business, and the coaches who study and adapt will win, and those who don't won't. And they agreed the power players in this new world will be established this year, and become evident to everyone by midseason.
They weren't Clemson bashing or Dabo hating.... just using us as an example. He said it applies to all schools.

Good point only issue with that mindset is portal wasn't really a thing when Dabo won our championships. The landscape is changing. As much as Dabo hates the portal I believe he knows he will eventually have to use it and use it he will.

he won't use the portal. Of course he will use it, he already has. This "Dabo refuses to use the portal" nonsense is a false narrative that is perpetuated by people who refuse to do any research. Dabo has been clear on the portal since day one, yet people continue to try and interpret his words/actions to fit their own emotional narrative. You don't do things the same way as everyone else and expect different results.
The whole thing is mind bottling.

There is some truth to this. How often have Clemson and Alabama had recruits that spend 3 years in the program before they contribute anything? Not as many recruits are willing to do that now, for better or worse. Serviceable upper-classmen in the portal who can fill gaps now and provide depth seems like a good idea PROVIDED they fit the culture. I still think if you build your program on transfers you will be rebuilding every year or every other year. Recruiting and development is still the lifeblood, but the transfer portal is a valuable supplement.

I think the "quality" of the portal is substantially improved and will continue to get better over time. This is not everyone else's "sloppy seconds" anymore.
Dabo is attracted to quality and while he may be selective, I believe he will utilize the portal when he finds a value that fits a need.

RU--agreed we need to take more from the portal...part. this year. But on average, we only need to use it sparingly IF we are doing what we need to with HS recruiting. BAMA has done well in this area. We need to upgrade our NIL game...which we are doing. Better late than never.....
As the resident UF grad on here (I have season tix to both CLEM and UF) I can unequivocally say Dan Mullen is literally the LAST person anyone needs to consult with concerning recruiting. Dude was a butt ### lazy as a recruiter and is the epitome of a smug jerk. Thought he coudl out-coach everyone. Kirby even trolled him after the 2021 UF/UGA game saying you had to recruit to succeed. Dan is almost the direct opposite of Dabo. UF is a perfect illustration of a team that has depended too heavily on transfers in the past rather than just do what UGA has done and recruit HS kids at an elite level . . No excuse not to be elite in recruiting in that state...

Dabo will adapt, but he will not change, which is a good thing. He will not only remain committed to his current players, but portal players will need to be a good fit for the culture he has built. My guess is, if he has to waller-in-the-mud to win he will retire.
I believe the cream of the crop in the portal already know where they are headed before they enter the portal, or have a good idea of where they will end up.

It's commo sense at this point. You can't make up for outgoing transfers with recruiting high schoolers. Look at the teams we've lost to over the years. It's been by mostly transfers.
USC - rattler, the WR and others
LSU - Joe Burrow
Ohio State - Justin fields and Trey sermon.
We have to be hitting the portal hard, or we will be left behind 100%

Dan Mullen is right.
Alabama and Georgia will survive longer than us because they recruit at a higher level. But the programs that are surpassing us is growing every year. Ohio State and Michigan have passed us. USC is getting close. Schools like FSU and Miami are flipping their rosters in a hurry.
Recruiting and culture will keep us around the top 10, while competing for ACC Championships every year. But that will be our peak. I don't think we can compete for national titles without the portal. Just my opinion though.

Eventually, we will be forced to look at the portal as another tool for recruiting. I don't think Dabo wanted to give it any legitimacy until it actually became legitimate on its own. Now, that appears to be the case and so we will have to take it and use it for what it is.

I'm very concerned about the opinion of a fired Florida coach and a chump from UCLA named Newweasel.
The portal is slightly overrated and most players on it are scrubs. Deal with it.
