To those of u criticizing Herbie & Fowler's coverage (long)

Dec 6, 2015, 1:08 AM

It seems like some people are so obsessed with finding a pundit, commentator, or announcer that isn't giving Clemson the credit we deserve that their paranoia has begun to cloud their judgement completely.

It's and incontrovertible fact that some ESPN crews can be extremely biased toward specific conferences and/or teams in extremely negative or extremely positive perspectives, depending on the individual. However, you shouldn't let the overwhelming incompetence of Ed Cunningham and Jesse Palmer put you into hypervigilance where you are constantly listening to every statement and trying to find a way to interpret it as a knock at Clemson.

The obsession against all things ESPN seems to have gotten much worse this year despite the fact that we have received more coverage and more respect than ever before. It's gotten to the point that if an announcer says anything good about our opponent in a game no matter how trivial, several people will immediately interpret it as a slight to us.

After reading the post a few minutes ago about how Fowler and Herbstreit basically don't deserve to live I wanted to list several things that I remember these guys saying during the telecast that were very supportive and gave high praise to our team, players, and coaches. Those of you in the tinfoil hats somehow weren't able to hear any of these things despite how often they were said.

They spent a ton of time talking about how great Deshaun Watson is. They literally went on and on and on. They mentioned him as a Heisman candidate on several occasions and agreed that he should be in New York and strongly considered for the award. Herbstreit mentioned several of Deshaun's specific stats pointing out how impressive they are. He calls Deshaun the best dual threat QB in all of college football and says he throws the best deep ball.

They also gave Wayne Gallman more credit than he has gotten from any other announcers all year, specifically in the second half. They talked about his speed and how impressed they are with his hard-nosed running style that can turn a potential 1 yard gain into a 5 yard gain time and time again. They also discussed how he is still learning the position and how great he is going to be if he continues to improve at the same rate.

Herbie mentioned the outstanding play of Ben Boulware and BJ Goodson on several occasions. He gave them significantly more praise as a group than I thought they deserved at certain points in the game. They both had high praise for Shaq Lawson from start to finish. Like pretty much every crew, they spoke incredibly highly of his talent and level of play.

They complimented Mackensie Alexander a few times and discussed the significant growth and improvement of Tankersley throughout the year. They were highly complimentary of both Christian Wilkins and Austin Bryant as well on the defensive line.

Something that was very rare to hear was their praise of our offensive line. Herbie made a point to point out how great our offensive line has been this year even though at the beginning of the year all of the pundits were saying it would be a huge weakness and possibly prevent us from winning the conference. He mentioned Charone Peake and said as talented as he is catching the ball, he's made name for himself nationally for how great of a blocker he is and how he always sticks on his man throughout the play. They mentioned how talented Jordan Leggett is and how he is a mismatch for most opponents.

They also spoke highly of our coaching staff. They said that Venables is very deserving to be a finalist for the nation's top assistant (Broyle's Award) and that it is nearly unprecedented for a team to put 7 or the top 8 guys in the front 7 on defense in the NFL yet come back the following year and have a defense that produces at close to the same level.

They mentioned how Dabo is a great motivator and how great he is at bringing Clemson into the spotlight with his clever catchphrases and wit.

They even mentioned how we have two of the most impressive wins in all of college football this year with our wins over Notre Dame and Florida State. Herbie has had us ranked #1 in his poll for two months now. He's been extremely supportive of Clemson for nearly the entire year, especially since the Notre Dame victory.

Of course they also praised UNC, especially Fedora and Gene Chizik's ability to turnaround the defense in year one. They gave a lot of credit to several of their players also.

On the flip side, they mentioned Marquise Williams on countless occasions and talked about how much trouble he kept having trying to complete passes (until the 4th qtr when he threw the ball much better). They talked about how good Elijah Hood is but pointed out as great as he is that he couldn't run between the tackles against our defense with much success.

The only time they were critical that was unfair in any way was when TJ Green was ejected for targeting. That was an unfair analysis. But the talk about the phantom offside on the onside kick was completely warranted and would have shown significant bias toward Clemson if they didn't mention it. No football fan wants a game to end with a controversial call involved because it takes away from the team's accomplishments and gives people an excuse.

I'm sorry for the length of this post, but I wanted to point out just the positive things that I remember them saying about our team, players, coaches, and program. I'm sure there were several more examples that I don't remember off hand.

I just can't figure out exactly what was said in tonight's broadcast that leads some people to believe that Kirk Herbstreit and Chris Fowler have an agenda against us and are openly trying to talk us down.

My only beef is that they were fawning all over whomever had the ball. This is not exclusive to Herbie and Fowler, I hate when any announcers do that.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

As I state earlier, Herbstreit talks too much

Dec 6, 2015, 1:18 AM

and it annoys the heck out of me. I don't need to hear his voice every second of the game.

###!!!

I couldn't even finish your dumba$$ diatribe.

I expect the announcers to report the game; I don't expect these jerks to tell me what they think should happen and/or what/who they believe should be ranked where. That's not their job!!!!!

That's why we now haw have a Playoff Committee. They re not made up/comprised of the news media but of those who have been involved with the game itself.

Stop telling me what I should think b/c that's what you believe. That's called propaganda. Like in communism.

Give me a freaking break. Just WIN Tigers!!! Don't listen to the Non-Believers.

Thank you. Well said. I think at times they were critical of the procedure and other penalties Clemson had, but I think that was a fair criticism, too. I had no real issues with their calling of the game. I appreciate Herbstreit's noticing of WR blocking downfield.

I think some Clemson fans are strangely paranoid on this topic. Everyone is out to get us. It's all a big conspiracy.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If I thought like many who post here

Dec 6, 2015, 1:47 AM

There wouldn't be a single announcer who is anything but a d bag, or a hole, or homer, or Coot, or whatever. They are all not bleeding orange I guess.

Re: If I thought like many who post here

Dec 6, 2015, 10:57 AM

I thought they were fair and unbiased throughout the game. Fowler always shows emotion on big plays throughout a game, and Herbstreit speaks what it is on his mind. Didn't watch the game thinking they were leaning a particular way, and thought it was fine.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Your points are well taken, but Fowler did go on & on a bit

Dec 6, 2015, 1:47 AM

much about the "phantom" offsides call.

Can spin it any way you want to but ESPN (AKA SEC) bias is BS......these guys know who pays THEIR salaries and can not be objective even if they wanted to be.....SEC will ALWAYS RULE in their narrow minded & tunnel vision opinions.....LOL.....Go Tigers!!!!

They also mentioned (and seemed extremely impressed)

that we were #1 despite losing all of our starting linemen on both sides of the ball.

Don't bother trying to talk any sense into the idiots on this board. This is one of the most well-put together posts on Tnet in a long time, with great points that are backed up by actual facts. The dummies on this board would rather live in their fantasy world where everyone hates Clemson and all that ESPN cares about is pumping the SEC. I agree with you that there are certain people on the network who only exist to make the SEC look better (Finebaum is the worst about this, but there are others), but Herbie and Fowler tonight were great.

Let them have their delusions. If they don't have the intelligence to read and understand your post, it's their loss. Kudos.

Do you fee better now? Perhaps if every show for an entire week and all day long had not been about what happens when NC beats Clemson maybe folks would not be so sensitive.
Alabama is a one trick pony and plays in our sorry conference and ESPN is just propping them up!!!

Judge Chamberlain Haller: That is a lucid, intelligent, well thought-out objection.
Vinny Gambini: Thank you, Your Honor.
Judge Chamberlain Haller: Overruled.

Verbosity aside, they were both being ##### last night. It is not appropriate to question calls to that degree at all, and if you are going to call out the refs, at least do so without bias. They were both rooting for an upset in a big way. They would never treat Bama, Michigan/MSU, OSU, LSU, UGA, the real USC, etc with such disrespect.

They did fine job most of the game, but ...

Dec 7, 2015, 10:57 AM

Their incessant harping on the onsides kick thing set the stage for a national debate that continues today.

They made an unnecessarily lengthy analysis of and gave approval to the targeting ejection of TJ Green, but made no mention of the two blatant "helmet-to-helmet" infractions committed by UNC players ... one of which was during the controversial onsides kick.

This is my main beef with ALL of the current people used to call games ... they talk WAY too much! They inject FAR too much bias, both good and bad, into the narrative.

badge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

My only beef with them was when they started talking about

Dec 7, 2015, 11:15 AM

how Dabo should be mollycoddling the punter after the mental "fake" punt. That play could easily have cost us the ball game, and undone 12 weeks worth of previous hard work. Dabo's reaction may have been slightly excessive, but not by much in my book.

I didn't think the commentating was terrible

Dec 7, 2015, 11:28 AM

but it did drag on to much at the end about the kick - which even if recovered by the tar heels does not necessarily mean they would win.

Mike and Mike went on and on about this on their show this morning. To the point where I had to email them - which I have never contacted any ESPN show, ever.

Here is a cut and paste of Mike Golic's response:

"Interesting that our ratings have never been higher......soooo, we are fine, you go ahead and enjoy whatever you listen too" Golic

Little surprised Golic came across so condescending in his reply. Oh well. I have cut back to the point I only watch live sports on ESPN. I only knew about this because someone posted it on here and I went and watched it.

Great post and actually watching the replay when Fowler

Dec 7, 2015, 11:29 AM

tried to bring the onside kick into the conversation, Herbie changed it to talk about all the positives we did. Fowler did annoy me a little but he always seems to inject something negative regarding us for some reason.

and they were offsides because of the formation. Not enough players on one side of the kicker.
