If Clemson ever wants to be successful in baseball again,

Jun 1, 2022, 8:11 AM

the glaring issue we MUST fix is the scholarship limit of just over 11 at any one time. NIL has given us the perfect tool to do this. The money to equal a scholarship can LEGALLY be given to as many athletes via legitimate NIL deals as we want. Only by leveling the scholarship playing field, in SOME manner, will ANY new baseball coach that we hire be able to compete for talent to play for Clemson.

NIL could also work to secure the services of those players who, in the past, may have jumped from high school directly into minor league baseball. I'm not talking about first rounders, but slightly lesser talented players. If given nearly the same monetary option, which would YOU rather do, toil in the drudgery and obscurity of the minor leagues for three years, or walk amongst some of the most beautiful coeds in the world, and play college baseball? That would be a low brainer.

:)

What is the NCAA scholarship limit? If we are giving fewer than the allowed number then yes we need to change but I doubt that is the case.

The current scholarship limit is a total of 11.7 scholarships to be stretched over a total of 27 players on a 35 man roster.

However, the NCAA is looking at eliminating the limit on scholarships altogether which will put all teams on a level playing field and eliminate the advantage that some teams like Vanderbilt currently have.

Why does the limit not apply to Vandy and/or others?

In a nutshell, Vandy is a private school so they are able to circumvent the limit by offering additional financial aids to basically offer full scholarships to players vs public schools like Clemson where there are certain limitations due to the scholarships allotted for baseball schollies.

I'm not sure if David Hood has broken this down before (I wanna say yes) but I think it'd be neat if we had an article to touch on some of the challenges of baseball that aren't well known as Clemson begins their search for a new baseball coach
