No Jobs

Mar 26, 2022, 4:07 PM

When the Military let me go, came home to few chances at employment of any type.
As an ex Army officer I believed the job market would be eager to see me back in the USA.
I was wrong.
I finally got a job stocking shelves at a supermarket. My roommate (ex Green Beret) got one selling peanuts. We were soon living large, life was very good!

This week saw a Burger King sign saying they pay "daily" for workers. I have not eaten in one for years due to ~~~. I would have taken that job or any job. Now folks don't want a job, even for one day.

For decades to support my Bride --> worked a job and many, many, many part time jobs as my Bride took care of my boy. She worked also after it was just the two of us. We have done OK.

I don't think we have a shortage of labor, we have a shortage of folks who are willing to support themselves.

I think companies like Burger King would have an easier time retaining and hiring workers if they paid a better wage.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

pay a better wage

Mar 26, 2022, 4:25 PM

Even on Wall Street that is true.
The deal for any business is to make a profit. A job at Burger King is a job if you can't get on at Chick-fil-A. Work hard, gain experience and things will happen.
It is not about a business being a sweat shop, but making a profit so it can survive.

Agree. I’m not sure who will pay 15 an hour to cook French fries. Pretty sure the Whopper and fries would soon be priced out of business seeing you can get a burger at a better restaurant for 8-10 dollars and a lot better as well. Another thing I have noticed at a fast food that I used to frequent was that their food quality has went way down. Used to love these burritos they had and for the price was great but now I rarely go anymore because it just is not good.

I know a few people from college that got their "business degrees" and partied right through college making C's. Most of them now make well over 100,000 dollars a year to basically do nothing except sit in an office all day. And they wonder why the people who work in the 100 degree warehouse heat call out and don't work their ### off 24/7. I sat in meeting once where they were talking about how they told them they were "looking into" getting heat/ac for the warehouses. but they were never going to do it. they took that money and built a hunting lodge for the higher ups to spend their work days. Oh, and did I mention the starting pay for most of the positions is roughly $12 an hour? while right down the rode there are plants paying at least $20 an hour. Why would someone work there???? lol

Burger King has 20,000 employees

The CEO makes 20,000,000 per year.

He should give up the 20,000,000 and work for free.

Each employee would receive a 50 cents an hour wage. Then you could let one of them run the company.

No I’m having the same trouble hiring at my work as well. Not many applicants. 3 years ago I would have 5 plus great choices. Now it’s a contractor or nothing. Burger King probably pays fair based on the job. Those jobs used to be young people jobs when I was in school. Not many kids are applying and older folks need to much money to take that level of pay. Not thinking unless you are in management that a fast food job was created to support a family. People ask me how they can make more money and I tell them to make your self more valuable. If that is working your way up or gaining more education do what it takes and don’t sit around waiting for people to give it to you.

Mar 27, 2022, 7:38 PM

I worked at a plant years ago and learned multiple jobs there, eventually becoming a manager. I showed up everyday, and never complained, but the company took advantage of that and kept beating around the bush when I would ask about a raise. Put it this way, I could barely support myself, much less a family on what they were paying me. I eventually left and went back to school to get my degree, and I am much happier now. Im not saying that's what you do of course, just saying that it does happen at places.

Mar 26, 2022, 4:52 PM [ in reply to Re: No Jobs ]

Many people, especially younger people do not want to work. I have no idea how the ones who show up late, lay out and eventually get fired are being supported but whoever is doing it (government, family or whoever) needs to stop. They aren’t helping these kids. This younger generation is on a path to poverty individually and collectively as a society. Many of them are not being taught responsibility and accountability by anyone.

Mar 26, 2022, 9:21 PM [ in reply to Re: I work for a large company that pays well and has good benefits. ]

Well done you! Raised your son well.
I retired last year, partially due to the horrible work force coming in. I probably missed work 15 times in 40 years. I had salary engineers and other professionals miss that much in a year. For no real illness. My HR dept started not firing them due to not being able to find replacements. Coming in late, bad attitudes, etc. I finally gave up when an entry level engineer 1 year out of school - who we paid $80k - told one of my location engineering managers that he did not want to work more than 40 hours and if he did, he thought he should get paid for it.
These kids are crazy, they are “woke”, they are snowflakes, have no work ethic, no accountability, and simply want everything given to them. There are exceptions of course, but those are becoming more rare.
Schools have bred a lot of this into them. Dummying down to the lowest common denominator, no longer having kids compete and given participation trophies.
It’s sad. I would have worked a bit longer, but was not worth it to deal with their crap.
Ahhhhhhh

The woke snowflakes have no work ethic and have now taught that to their children. These children are now at the age where they should be filling the fast food part time jobs. In my era, they were prized jobs. Now in St. Petersburg, they pay $13-15 per hour and either cannot get people to come to work or get some amazingly horrible employees. Fast food here has had to reduce hours, close the dining area and make it drive thru only, etc.
this has little to do with pay and more about people who want everything and care about nothing.

Don't think it is the wages. Some of the younger generation seem to be allergic to work. I recently discussed this with someone in the medical field. He said the new doctors are very lazy and don't go out of their way to do something for someone. Wages certainly is not the case here. Our government helped with a lot of this attitude. Stimulus checks, not having to pay rent, food stamps, food giveaways, feeding of children at schools year round, free child care, and free heating fuel. Why would anyone want to work ?

They have a big "We Are Hiring" sign out front but he said no one has even applied. For part of the day they have 2 people working. Almost everywhere I go I see "We Are Hiring" signs and all they talk about on the news is the big job exodus continues. I am too, as are most Americans. No group of folks has ever been as generous to their brothers than folks in the USA.

I don't see it as a generational thing as that is words. The greatest generation remains the WWII folks.

Every generation since has had an easier go of it due to them. They completely spoiled their kids -- the next generation.

During Carter a bank account was drawing 15%. Mortgages were high got over 15%.

I (and most in my crowd) could not make it on one job of 40 hours a week, so we found ways to add to that. We were not thinking retirement, but making it week to week.

Now government gives out endless $$ to buy votes. It is that simple. No way in hell would I have ever worked a day except I like to eat and there was no way to eat but work.
I could not be the CEO, so took any and all jobs. Now many folks are happy with free money and see most honest labor as below their station.

mortgages rates peaked at 17.8% in 1982, they were 11% in 1979.
Unemployment is currently at a 52 year low

And my 1st job was on my granpa Oz's farm handing tobacco to the stringers for $3/day.
Had to stand on a crate to reach the leaves when they dropped the sides on the drag.
I was glad to get it too and looked forward to granpa waking me up to go with him and check the barns at night to clean leaves that fell onto the flues off so they wouldn't catch fire.
Mom, me & my sister lived on the farm while Dad was overseas with the Air Force in Nam.

Perhaps its time to have a discussion about immigration. More specifically can we talk H1-B visas and how they have impoverished Washington DC?

are some of the hardest working people I have ever met. we could learn a thing or two from them. I worked with this lady who sent almost all of her check back to mexico every week so her family could come over (legally)

Approximately 10-15% of the foreign labor force in areas related to my industry are either being sanctioned or too busy defending their cities to steal American jobs. It does not make me happy that people are systematically destroying each other on another continent, but I am thankful that our business model relies on domestic labor only. Our competitors are raising prices, while ours have remained constant. The invisible hand has made up for this shortage in labor and steered it toward our company.

It is because of Tigerbalm1's innovations and outright theft of more efficient production techniques that we provide jobs to Americans only, go home by 5:30, pay our poeple well, and can outcompete those who do not. We've had several clients drive up to 4 hours to visit us and verify that we are a real company, and not some guy brokering work to Eastern Europe and the Baltic regions. They always shake my hand and thank me for proving that good old-fashioned American ingenuity is still alive.

Back in my 20's, I sold Krispy Kreme donuts and chocolate

Mar 27, 2022, 7:02 AM

chip cookies door to door on Fridays to pay my bills. I sold about 200 dozen every Friday. They were not pre-sold, so I had to hump it every Friday until they were all gone. I did that until I was about 30 years old. I would go to Blacksburg,Clover,Saluda,Edgefield,Abbeville,Honea Path, and finish up in Belton. I had a little Clemson Orange VW crammed to the gills with boces of donuts. I would make about 400.00 every Friday and that is how I got into real estate. It was sometiems a little embarassing when I ran into a bank or doctor's office wearing shorts and a tshirt with me Clemson hat on and I bumped into someone I knew. But, it was honest work and it allowed me to pay my bills while learning how to make it in real estate at 22 years old. By the way, the first subdivision I ever developed, one of my donut customers gave me 400,000 dollars to do it with......My second subdivision was financed by another donut customer in Williamston...

Hard work never hurt anyone...

I don't believe a word of this. We can't find anyone that will even bother to interview for a job right now. Since Covid, people decided they didn't want to work anymore and we can't find anyone.
I don't believe there's no jobs available because everyone I know that's in my position is having the same problem. WE can't find people to work.

I think it's a lot more complex than just passing it off to " laziness" or willingness .
Think these last 2 generations simply have a different world view than you or I , and not to take liberty with what I think you or I would think about it but I think the way things look today versus what they'll look like at the end of the decade is going to really shock a lot of us who aren't paying attention to the why's and the who's.

I tend to agree with much of your post. There are more complicated reasons than running down the last 2 generations as lazy or sitting around waiting on a check from the government. Things will look different for sure in the next few years. Maybe for worse, but I am hoping that perhaps some better will come out of it too.
