Is IPTAY now a relic?

Feb 15, 2022, 6:26 PM

Dr. Fike is credited with being the originator of IPTAY.
Many suggested that $50.00 be the minimum donation, but Fike thought it would be best to get as many Clemson supporters involved as possible, so he established the $10.00 minimum.

I joined in the 60's for $10. I have gladly paid thousands into to IPTAY. It has served us well. No organization in the USA has been the equal as to raising funds from normal fans.

Going forward IPTAY will be OK, but different.

NIL means that one can donate $ to football players - even the one of your choice.
You, me and a 100 others can now form up and build a pool of $$ to pay for players. That is already a huge thing (Texas A&M). All others will follow or die.

More booster $$ will now be going to buy players as opposed to better facilities to dazzle and lure kids. Less $$ will be there for coaches, but enough.
Less will be going to things not football.

Times are changing.
I personally don't care for the new "players for hire", but it is reality.

IDK. But, great question!

It will be interesting for sure to see how it is modified.

I think the NIL process is going to get "super-ugly" and lead to some unintended circumstances that people "who think money fixes everything" do not understand.
Egos and jealously and feeling under- compensated might motivate a kid to "not perform at a key moment" in a game for example!
Who knows!
If A&M wins the NC next year and Texas makes the playoffs "finallY" because of NIL money - everybody will look to follow their model or look to add some legislation to it(NIL deals) in order to keep up. It's going to be interesting for sure!

It's an interesting question.

I think IPTAY membership has shifted to a "pay to play" organization. In order to get seats to see one of the best football teams in America, we have to pay (donate) to be considered for seat and parking assignments. I don't mind paying to see my favorite team play, but in recent years donations have increased to maintain good seats (seat equity plan).

The NIL may be an incentive for athletes, but it won't pay for tickets or parking. You can argue that top shelf athletes will bring more success which will result in higher ticket sales.

IPTAY donations pay are used for the good of the Athletics Department, and the University needs the donations. I hope boosters don't consider dropping IPTAY for NIL investment opportunities...

Interesting question--we shall see. Right now, membership gets you access to Clemson+.

It’s because it’s sterile and I like the taste, not that you asked, but I wanted to share that.
