Test results are in: I can't eat tree nuts any more.

Nov 23, 2021, 7:54 AM

Sucks, because those are by far my favorite type of nuts to put in my mouth.

I can still eat peanuts, and croconuts though. And I guess I can also eat DeezNuts.

No pecans, walnuts, pine nuts, cashews, hazelnuts, almonds, or nwordtoes. I live in a freaking pecan orchard. Not cool.

What really ticks me off is there's nothing I can do about it. I can't lose weight, or lift weights, or do anything to overcome this. I guess I can get re-tested in 5 or so years and see if it goes away. Until then, I'm supposed to tote an epi-pen around.

It's like this came out of no-where. I've gorged on tree nuts constantly my whole life, and then all of a sudden they might kill me.

Poot.

What is up with developing allergies after years

Nov 23, 2021, 7:56 AM

of eating something or being in contact with something? (see my poison ivy post below).

Is it because our immune system changes or something?

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I used to get posion ivy, not anymore.

Nov 23, 2021, 8:02 AM

I used to be allergic to all kinds of crap, then I wasn't, then I was again. I used to not be allergic to Azithromycin, then developed an allergy to it. It happens. Very common for allergies to come and go over years.

It's because the US food system is completely fawked.

Even 'organic' is coated in chemicals and pesticides. Plus the trees or plants are growing in soils with decades of chemicals so it not directly treated, it's in the tree/plant.

Mrs. Tig developed a gluten intolerance late in life.

Nov 23, 2021, 9:15 AM [ in reply to What is up with developing allergies after years ]

She was fine until about 6 or 7 years ago, and it slowly got worse until she started trying to find out what was wrong. Took about 2 years and 4 doctors before they figured it out. Actually, the doctor said that a fairly significant percentage of the population has some varying degree of gluten intolerance, but Mrs. is in the very low percentile of people that are actually classified as being celiac. It's a pain to deal with and completely changes the way you buy groceries, prep food, eat, and even wash dishes. It took a while to get a system down, but once we did it seems to be working for her. It's killed going to restaurants because you have to vet them carefully as to how they handle food prep even more so than just using gluten-free ingredients. It makes traveling a pain, and it makes big gatherings like Thanksgiving and Christmas a pain.

Youngest son has that. Same deal.

Nov 23, 2021, 8:00 AM

They say it will likely last for his lifetime, although that may be different for adults who develop it.

I feel the same way with heroine

Nov 23, 2021, 8:11 AM

for a couple of months, even that first year....totally fine. Nothing seemed to get in my way, clear complexion, actually helped my work and my mood.

Then BAM out of the blue, I had really bad complexion issues, constantly constipated, needle marks just started showing up and lingering. I mean, I was so confused as things were going so well and then BAM it became allergic to me.

I kicked the heroine, it was tough, as I thought I could get back to that first feeling and back to normal. I might try again in 5 years or so and see if I am still allergic.

I missed something. What's the side effects if you eat pecan

Nov 23, 2021, 8:22 AM

walnuts, pine nuts, cashews or any of deez nuts?

badge-ringofhonor-clemsonsteve02.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

First reaction was full body hives that lasted about 4 days.

Nov 23, 2021, 8:29 AM

Dr and wife say that the second reaction will be much worse.

Only one way to find out...

Nov 23, 2021, 11:06 AM

Here's some advice that you can trust, because I am a 'Science Communicator' (found out about these specialists from the Science Channel series "What on Earth")...What you'll need to do is start eating small amounts daily to build your tolerance. Kind of like those people who inject themselves with snake venom every day. If you're the man that you say you are you should have no problem acclimating your body to these new found toxins, if you're not...Well, you've at least reproduced so your bloodline will live on for another generation at least.

Good luck on your journey!

Nov 23, 2021, 8:25 AM

it's that us commonfolk are smarter than them doctors, so I would take any quack advice you get from them with a grade of slaw. I think you're perfectly fine to fill your mouth with nuts.

Nov 23, 2021, 8:26 AM

Eat a bunch of nuts and just hit myself with the epi-pen.

She made me promise I won't do it.

I had my fangers crossed though.

I can’t help but feel like this is a reaction to the COVID vaccine. That or a conspiracy by Big Nuts to make you desire their product even more.

Nov 23, 2021, 11:17 AM

I know there’s a certain tick reaction that renders you allergic to meats in general. Be glad you don’t have that. They day I can’t eat bacon at will is the day I call Dr Kevorkian.

So, I had a pretty narly spider bite a few weeks ago.

Nov 23, 2021, 1:33 PM

My thigh swole up and looked pretty nasty. Nasty enough where my wife took a pic (without my donger) and sent it to her nursing friends.

I assumed it was a spider, but it could have been anything, I guess.

I asked the allergy doctor and he stopped me mid story and said, "unrelated". Very dismissive. I almost tuned him up, but decided not to.
