Solution for OL woes by copying successful SEC teams

Oct 18, 2021, 5:33 AM

I think the solution for our OL woes is not as complex as we may think. Ala, LSU, UGa and UF have all had success recruiting players off other teams via the portal. LSU, UGa and UF all took one of our players apiece. I believe we should recruit the entire 2nd string OL from UGa. Promise them immediate PT and a new OL coach. We currently have a coach whose job is dedicated to the portal--he should use it for these UGa players.

We don’t need leftovers that didn’t work out at other teams. We have the best OL recruiting we have ever had, they just need experience. We will be so much better next season & later this season on OL, our depth will be amazing too!

Our OL should be improved next year and hopefully years to come. We still need to find a true LT and experienced center for next year!

Center- I’m not sold on Rayburn yet and Lithicum will only be a RS Freshman.

Left Tackle - Jordan McFadden is NOT a LT. He should be playing guard! I don’t see a True LT on this roster.

"I don't see a true LT on this roster."

Look up Tristan Leigh ... needed a year in the weight room (i.e., RS in 2021) ... this is your "true LT"

I agree that we have recruited a lot better on the line I’m just not seeing the development I feel like we should over their career, if that changed we would absolutely be fine there..

This would be the concern. Hopefully it will be addressed with Caldwell retiring.

To Portal,or not to Portal is not the issue because our coach will not utilize the portal.
But let's look at the success of the 4 teams you have mentioned since the CFP's were formed ;
Alabama is the most successful of those teams with 5 appearances and 3 National Championships.
Georgia has one trip, a Championship loss to Bama in 2017 but hands down they appear to be the favorites to win it all this season. But they are sound top to bottom, not just on the O-line.
LSU beat Clemson 2 years ago but just yesterday basically canned their Head Coach, and Florida has yet to even win the SEC.
And since we can't recruit the entire 2nd team O-line from UGA, your argument just got disintegrated in the portal seen in the Fans Ville's Dr. Pepper commercial.

Re: Solution for OL woes by helping them to age faster

Oct 18, 2021, 10:57 AM

Anyone notice why NC State and Pitt have been suprisingly good this year?

NC State OL - - - several seniors and juniors (I think one sophomore on the staring unit)

Pitt OL - - - 4 seniors and one junior ... all five have started each game of the year.

NC State and Pitt will both revert back to their normal success next year (when their OL is younger)

Clemson will hopefully have adequate experience on OL during H2-2021 to score somewhat better.

Clemson will be mother-truckers next year with the modest additional OL experience and getting true studs playing (which are RS'ing now) such as T.Leigh and D.Pennington.

Age and experience of the OL will be a major factor in next year's improvement (and maybe enough to help us win some otherwise tight games for remainder of 2021).

Good idea wrong Conf for OL. Need to recruit B10 for OL

Oct 18, 2021, 6:59 AM

Those big corn fed boys in my opinion have the best OL consistently. One from Iowa one from WI one from MI one from THE OS and one from Penn St (take ther #6 OL from each and you will have a good OL)

Recruit SEC for speed on DL LB WR RB

I’d settle for just teaching them the technique the other teams in the ACC use that allows them to grab, hold or tackle our DL in such a way the ACC refs just don’t see it as holding.

I'm curious...

Oct 18, 2021, 9:01 AM

which current players would you send packing in order to free-up scholarships for the new players you want to recruit from the portal?

Zero. We have plenty. Injuries have hurt and we're extremely young. That said, we had a couple spots that came open in the spring. We should have taken those 2 spots and brought in one year guys for oline depth... With the understanding no quarrentee of playing, only if they earned PT.

Uhh no !!! There are no extra scholarships laying around.***

a portal transfer.

I would much rather copy Wisconsin!

Oct 18, 2021, 7:06 PM

The Badgers consistently put OL starters in the NFL.

That recruits the next class OL to go to that school. Clemson has proven it can recruit some of the best WR talent around going back to Sammy Watkins. Some worked out some didn't.

But, a different direction maybe needed on the OL coach front. I.M.O in the QB Coach room as well! But, for this thread, let's see who's next for Wisconsin and get them on the roster!

Some people commented on the size of the Clemson OL - do we not look a bit undersized? I know these guys are 300+. But, it was said several times by people who barely watch football(so no bias).
