If you needed another reason to hate Ryan Day

Oct 3, 2022, 8:10 AM

That Dbag calls a fake punt in the 4th up 39 points this weekend. It almost led to a big brawl among coaches. He's a jerk.

Not without a butt chewing. We had a punter do his own fake punt against unc in the acc championship game. Dabo lit into him for about 2 minutes. Day didn’t say a word to his punter. Didn’t even check on him as he got killed on the sideline.

But watching the replay, Rutgers was clearly lined up to block the punt.

I’m not sure what’s worse, Ohio State running a fake punt or Ohio State letting Rutgers block a punt just because they are losing by a lot.

probably just took over. I don't think he had the time to make a well-thought-out and logical decision there. He saw tons of running room, had likely been taught to take off if he ever got that look, and i doubt the fact that they were up 49-10 and Rutgers may be offended ever crossed his mind.

Re: Because he's a kid and he got excited and the moment

Oct 3, 2022, 9:31 AM

I wasn’t talking about the punter. I was talking about the post above that gives only 2 options- faking the punt or getting it blocked.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Have you watched the play?

Oct 3, 2022, 10:58 AM

Or are you just commenting based on what you think happened, based on an article you read?

Here's the link in case you haven't seen it:

https://youtu.be/awxDAxygywE

Rutgers clearly overloaded the right side of the line, knowing that their punter does rugby style kicks to that side. The Ohio State punter looks like he's going to punt, but didn't think he could get it off or, as someone else stated, saw daylight and instinctively ran for the first down.

I don't like Ryan Day, but turning this into a classless decision by Day or Ohio State is a reach in my opinion. Yes, it is "bad optics" as they say, but when you watch the play I don't see how the punter or Ryan Day can be faulted.

If Rutgers didn't want the punter running for the first down, they shouldn't have made it so easy for him.

Yes, I looked at the play. He has a CLEAR OPPORTUNITY to punt the ball, there is no way it's going to get blocked. Anyone who says otherwise must be trying to justify what he did.

Re: So if the other team is clearly trying to block the punt

Oct 4, 2022, 8:44 AM

You don’t fake a punt with a lead like that against a hapless opponent. If the punter is a foreigner with a lack of understanding about American football, it could be forgiven. If the coach calls it, he’s a punk. If the punter understands football, he wouldn’t do it.

Day at the very least should’ve pulled him aside and explained why this should not be done.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Exactly. There was no one outside the right hash. The punter

Oct 3, 2022, 9:05 AM [ in reply to On the surface, this looks bad. ]

is probably taught as a rugby-style kicker to run if all he sees is green for 30 yards. Now, game situation does not call for a fake at that time. I think the blame falls on the punter.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Exactly. There was no one outside the right hash. The punter

Oct 3, 2022, 10:19 AM

I agree with everything but the last sentence. It is up to the coach to tell a player when to do something other than what he has been taught to do in practice. Falls squarely on Day.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't expect Day to pull his punter aside

Oct 3, 2022, 11:01 AM

just before that play, and say, "I know we've taught you to run if you can easily get the first down, but in case Rutgers stacks the line on one side and tries to block the punt, don't run for it." Come on.

The punter did the right thing given the situation.

Purely from a single play aspect you may be right. But, the

Oct 3, 2022, 11:46 AM

overall "situation" is that your team is up 39 points, and there is no good thing to come out of further humiliating your opponent by a move that will be villified just as this one is being villified.

It smacks of Spurrierism. After running it up on teams all those years, it sure didn't take the Old Ball Sac long to take his toys and go home when it became apparent some of those out of town chickens were about to come home and roost in HIS Henhouse.

:)

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I actually agree with Spurrier's philosophy

Oct 3, 2022, 11:59 AM

that it's the other team's job to stop them.

I've never thought it was fair to players to tell them to basically stop trying just because they are winning big. If it's truly about competing, doing your best, building depth, etc., then this notion of players essentially falling on the ball and not trying is very inconsistent with that.

I'm not advocating for being classless in victory, but if the other team is still trying their hardest, why shouldn't you?

Rutgers made it really easy for that punter to run for the first down. There was no one close to him on that side. I think he did the right thing to run it.

I'm actually surprised you don't see this more often as long as the backups are in. I can certainly see the logic behind allowing your backups to run the normal offense in an attempt to get them the best experience. I'm not saying that was the logic behind what Spurrier was doing though.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

NOPE

Oct 3, 2022, 10:13 AM

He didn't call a fake punt. The punter did what football players do, and are trained to do - he ran into a wide open space because the defense decided to overload one side in an attempt to - yes - block the punt and give themselves a chance. That was the wrong move by the defense, and they paid for it. Why is their psyche any more damaged, anyway, no matter what happened on the play? They were down 49-10 and had to answer for it either way, either outcome. Football is football. And on any play, even a long pass, they have just as much a chance to stop it, intercept it, or create a turnover.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: NOPE

Oct 3, 2022, 10:23 AM

You are correct, he did not call it and the player did what he is taught to do in practice. It was the coaches responsibility to tell the player NOT to do it in that situation. So it is still Day’s responsibility. I am not bothered as much by the call as I am by Day’s behavior on the sideline after the play. Guy definitely has an attitude problem.
