Question about UGA kicker on last extra point.....

Jan 2, 2018, 12:24 PM

In regulation, when UGA was lining up for the last extra point. The kicker took a couple of steps forward (after he was set) before the ball was snapped. He then kicked it through. The announcers commented on the awkwardness of it.
Plenty of times we've seen kickers not quite have the timing right after the ball was snapped, but his moving early before the snap was unusual.
My question is: can a kicker be called for a false start?
Follow up question... if not, then would they be allowed to just run around back there and set up interesting fake FGs?

Well he's not on the line of scrimmage, so I think he can technically be "in motion" without a penalty.

RBs aren't on the line of scrimmage, but they can't move...

like that before the snap...they can go in motion, but a RB that just takes a couple of steps forward is going to be called for a false start....unless they play in GT's option attack.

RBs can move laterally but not toward the line of scrimmage. Technically it should be called but it won't ever be.

I wondered the same thing?

I have seen kickers rock back in forth but never move that far.

Me too. He is moving forward not horizontally. Thus I think it should have been a penalty.

I thought the same thing. They call it on running backs who are not on the line of scrimmage.

Yes he can (be called for it), and it should have been called. But so should a few PI and holding calls in last nights game.
By the letter of the rule, it should have been called but wasn't which is not really a big deal because he wasn't in a position to cause the defense to react. Just like the horse collar tackle, by the letter of the rule it was a flag, but should not have been called because the location of his right hand was not in a place where he could force the runner down. (i.e. there was no malicious or unnecessary roughness in the tackle) Of course this is all my opinion, but I don't get paid to do it

Yeah, it definitely wasn't a big deal...

and he would have made the kick five yards back also.
But I was mainly curious if there was some kind of special kicker rule or if the zebras just missed it.
I suppose if OU would've jumped offsides, they probably would have had to call it.

Only one player may be in motion and he must not be moving..

toward the LOS when the ball is snapped. While the kicker paused after moving forward he did not 'come set,' for a full second.

Not that a five yard penalty would have change the outcome of the kick. Honestly, they did UGA a disservice by not calling an infraction. Changing the kicker's position potentially threw off his rhythm and timing.
