This is way too much glass half full.

I find it hard to believe than more than 10% of Clemson fans would be happy with an internal hire for OC, and maaaaybe 50% for internal DC hire.

If Dabo goes internal for both OC/DC it's pretty clear that he's phoning it in. There's a reason why the two most successful hires he's made were both external

Never can have too many glasses that are half full. I respectfully disagree and think a lot of Clemson fans will be happy with Streeter as OC and Conn/Goodwin as co-DCs. That move would be the complete opposite of phoning it in because it will be Dabo’s opportunity to prove that he can develop his guys into great coaches and that will be motivation enough for him to do his best to make it a success. There always will be the small but vocal minority that wouldn’t be happy with anything but I think and hope that most fans will trust Dabo’s decision making. I know I will. And if Dabo starts phoning anything in the first thing will probably be his resignation. I don’t see him going through the motions if he is not all in.

Venables and who else?

Morris

Dec 13, 2021, 12:43 PM

In addition to being a great QB mentor, he completely transformed the offensive scheme and insisted on (and improved) receiver-blocking, S&C improvement, etc. ScElliott took over the steering wheel. Limited data set and so many variables (especially DJU & newbie OL performance), but it kinda looks like Elliott drove it into a ditch this year.

That's one way to look at it. I won't argue against Morris being a key hire for Dabo. However, you could also argue that the internal hires of Elliott/Scott were even bigger considering we started our CFP run and won 2 NC's after those hires. Yes, you could say they just took what Morris brought in and used that as a basis for what they did on offense, but one could argue that's the thought process for wanting to do the same with what BV built here by hiring guys that worked with him.

Morris was most definitely the catalyst for the Tigers' upward offensive trend...

I gotta say, as much as I liked Streeter and Korn as players, I am...less than enthusiastic about the idea of either of them being named our OC. But if either of those happen, I hope history proves my skepticism wrong. It just feels Billy Napieresque.

With respect to comparing Billy Napier as a ~ 30 year old offensive coordinator when he was with us (re: 2010) vs. a 44 year old Brandon Streeter possibly becoming our offensive coordinator is a false argument.

Napier and Streeter are both smart guys who have paid a lot of attention to football & worked hard.

Napier is at a whole different level now than when he was with us back in 2010.

Streeter has proven that he can take a middle of the road Cole Stoudt and squeeze a great game out of him. That was 2014.

Don't under estimate B.Streeter. I know that everyone gets tired of reading posts like this, but if Dabo thinks Streeter is ready, then Streeter is probably ready.

Totally agree with most of what you're saying. A lot cite the stoudt game but imo, it was a one off and very small sample size. But he has been primed to take over. If not here, it will happen at some school. Guess I'm in that 10% group mentioned above by rag86 in that I'm much less concerned about our offense getting outside help. Really think Brandon will be a better OC than position coach... And I hope we get a new QB coach. Would love to see a cutcliff come on as an analyst and QB instructor.

We're not changing our offense or base defense. As stated 10k times, Dabo we trust, we all know he has a plan. My wish list is whatever position you call it, someone that can recruit on BV's level. Just as Bama or OSU have proven, don't matter who the position coach is, as long as you have the Jimmy and Joes, you can win at high level.

I think his point was that Dabo CHOSE to promote Napier.

Dec 13, 2021, 1:08 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Clemson vs. Iowa State: The Cheez-It Bowl never meant so much ]

He wasn't knocking a 30-year-old Napier, just Dabo's decision making to CHOOSE Napier.

Dec 14, 2021, 7:32 AM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Clemson vs. Iowa State: The Cheez-It Bowl never meant so much ]

I think those are all fair arguments and I'm 100% willing to give Streeter (or Korn) a chance, should they be hired. I don't want it to sound like I hate either of them. It just...I guess my thing is that having lost 3/4 of our football Key 4 figures in the span of 3 weeks (plus Jeff Scott last season), it may not be the right timing for us to have an unproven rookie in the role. It's just a feeling.

And Napier is certainly a far better coach now than he was with us. It just wasn't his time.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It won't be Korn and IMHO there are 2 good reasons why...

Dec 13, 2021, 12:53 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Clemson vs. Iowa State: The Cheez-It Bowl never meant so much ]

1) As much as I enjoy WATCHING Coastal's spread-option offense, it relies heavily on QB-runs. Top tier QBs won't likely come to Clemson to operate such an un-NFL-like, QB-injury-jeopardizing offense. Maybe Korn has designed and could run a completely different offense, but I doubt it, and it's unproven.

2) Although I respect Korn, I wish his career at Clemson had been successful and injury-free, and I'm happy for his success at Coastal, I don't think his personal story here is one that's great for recruiting and player development. "I came in as a highly-rated recruit but then transferred after getting injured."

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Obligatory: I trust Dabo more than myself... BUT

Dec 13, 2021, 12:27 PM

1. My initial reaction to internal hire for OC is positive. Streeter has good track record.

2. My initial feeling about Mickey Conn and Goodwin, over a national search, is negative.

My initial feeling about hiring Dabo (after SCAR win) was negative. So... there's that.

Cannot speak for you CSO

Dec 13, 2021, 4:44 PM

You have your own perspective.

But, I see Dabo as the creme de la creme program builder. And, I see coaches like Kiffin and Leach quickly playing chess with any QB or Offense they inherit ... while Clemson's Offense played beginner checkers with DJ on campus for 20+ months before the 2021 season started.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree with you completely.

Dec 15, 2021, 10:10 AM

I admitted that my opinion is not strongly held nor do I believe it has much worth, when it comes to coaching calls, compared to Dabo's.

+1 for honesty. I was excited about Dabo being hired due to his enthusiasm and the players enthusiasm for him. It would have been exciting to hire Mike Leach but he would not still be at Clemson one way or another plus I trusted the promote an Alabama grad method!

Losing to a mediocre ISU would speak volumes, not winning.

Dec 13, 2021, 1:22 PM

If Dabo goes internal with both coordinator hires and those hires prep & coach the bowl game, then...

If Clemson beats, but doesn't destroy, a mediocre, unranked ISU, I don't think it would say much about the coordinator hires. Clemson out-talents ISU by a mile. Clemson SHOULD win, even with mediocre coordinators.

But if Clemson loses to a mediocre ISU, then I think it would be a bad indicator about the coordinator hires... and it'll be a long off-season.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Losing to a mediocre ISU would speak volumes, not winning.

Dec 13, 2021, 7:41 PM

... and if they decimate ISU, and the offense looks better than it has all season long, while the defense keeps to their normal domination, it can say the opposite... that is if some will actually open the possibility he could have it right and admit it. That's easier said than done.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yep. If D maintains & O pillages, it'll be a good sign

Dec 13, 2021, 8:40 PM

... and it'll make many wonder if Elliott underperformed his player-talent.

If the O and D perform really well (especially if it continues through next year), I think practically everyone will credit Dabo for making good hires/promotions. Otherwise the opposite. But I don't care much if spectators admit that Dabo's choices were good, bad, or mediocre. I care about results.
