Bowl Payouts Broken Down

Dec 8, 2014, 12:09 PM

http://accfootballrx.blogspot.com/2014/12/bowl-payouts-2014-15.html

this doesn't include the Playoff $ each conf gets:

Power Five (ACC, Big XII, Big Ten, SEC and Pac-12): each conference will receive approximately $50 million, which includes $300,000 for each school’s football team meeting the NCAA’s APR minimum for participation in a bowl game.

for all those whining about Swofford

this is with the POC keeping the ACC out of the Citrus

IMO, moving Michigan State down just to keep the Citrus Bowl in the Big Ten was a total rip-off. Clemson should have been in that bowl! If there is a silver lining in this, at least the ACC now has a better shot at a winning record since every team got bumped down one bowl slot... Maybe a few years of winning the bowls will finally change some perceptions? (At any rate, I'm pleased with VT vs. Cincinnati in Annapolis, so I have no complaint there).

No way those numbers are correct....compare the O Bowl

about $17 million per team.

No more BCS money. The playoff money is already set how to distribute. They money is no longer in making the bowls but with the conferences themselves. The Orange bowl has an agreement with the ACC to pay 55 million that the ACC splits between themselves an an opponent. SEC/B12 (Sugar 80M) B1G/P12(Rose 80M). He isn't wrong in the Orange bowl numbers but I don't think thats the whole story.

The other big bowls are involved in the Playoff this year

Dec 8, 2014, 12:41 PM [ in reply to No way those numbers are correct....compare the O Bowl ]

thus the payouts are 6 mil to the participating conferences- and the bulk of the $ goes to the playoff split-- 50 mil per Power 5

Playoffs will rotate so #s will change from year to year.

we will get walloped in 2015-2016, 2018-2019, 2021-2022,

and 2024-2025 in revenue as we will go from 27.5 to 4 mil in the Fiesta or Peach. Meanwhile the other leagues will be getting 40 mil each for those years their bowls aren't in the playoff like the next 2 years

ND having a good year this year and filling the OB spot instead of MSU would have at least diverted $ from the SEC, even Michigan State getting the nod for the OB would have been better.

Just a guess but
ACC will get between 70-100 mil each year total while SEC will likely be getting on avg 90-125; B10 about the same as the SEC, B12 in the 70-100 mil range, Pac12 in the 75-110 range

This may or may not be the case as described below. The ACC ownes the broadcast rights and is selling them to ESPN for $55 million a year. That means they are getting paid every year. It all depends on who they are obligated to pay with that money.

I like the breakdown but I don't think thats how payouts will work and certainly not every year. The Orange bowl payout at 27.5 is correct but what about the 40 million the other conferences get for the Sugar and Rose bowls? Does that money not get payed in years it is part of the playoff? Also those figures really make you wonder how the B1G is taking the Michigan St. slight sitting down. 27 million is a big chuck that they will miss out of for no apparent reason.

Re: Bowl Payouts Broken Down

I've looked at that possibility too, and honestly, I hope all P5s do get paid for their Contract Bowls every year. Why? Because the Rose and Sugar are split 50/50 - which would be even in years like this one, I'd assume. On the other hand, the Orange Bowl is only contracted to ONE conference, so if it works that way, the ACC would (presumably) get all $55 million next year... which would make up for the shortfall in other years.

27.5 + 55 + 27.5 = 110
40 + 40 + 40 = 120

I thought about this also. I know in years the ACC get matched up with ND we will receive a larger cut. It will be interesting to see how the contracts work out.

From the ESPN article on the bowl...

"The agreement was announced Thursday. ESPN will pay an average of $55 million annually for the bowl, sources said."

Also the ACC not only is contracted with the Orange bowl but owns the television rights and is selling them to ESPN for $55 million a year. That means they will get paid every season. Now the ACC may have a deal to pay the participants in the bowl game but that money should have been set aside in the playoff funds. Who knows but either way it was a good deal for the ACC.

He is correct. The only question is do any/all of the Sugar, Rose, Orange bowl payouts come every year or only non playoff years.
