How many of y’all were at The Rolling Stones concert in Death Valley

Jan 25, 2022, 8:03 AM

Seeing earlier post about concerts reminded me of this. These are my memories of that day:
I got in free because I had to set up chairs all day for $50
Pretty cool seeing the band come on and do sound check on the stage a couple of hours before it started.
They gave us a t-shirt with Rolling Stones on the front and Event Staff on the back
After the concert I sold that T-shirt for $100
One of the giant inflatable dolls on stage didn’t inflate on Honey Tonk Women like it was supposed to.
The police were hauling people out left and right off the field. Not sure what they did from my vantage point in the end zone, but probably weed involved.

I wish we could have another big stadium concert in the valley.

Yes, I was there.

A friend, his fiancée, and I were in grad school together. 3-4 hours before the concert, before the police blocked off the surrounding campus roads, we parked in front of Lowry Hall, set up a tailgate and waited for the time to head to the concert. We had keys to Lowry Hall so we were able to use the facilities.

At the concert, we watched one guy go absolutely crazy for Living Color, the opening act. And, yes, we remember the inflatables that did not quite inflate. And, the other inflatable had a cigarette in her hand, but it looked like she was flipping us off from our vantage point.

Great concert! But the traffic getting out was TERRIBLE! Worse than Gameday after a close win where everyone stays to see the end.

I was 15 at the Rolling Stones. I think the ticket I bought was about $15 just after the show had started. Later, I saw Pink Floyd, U2, and the Eagles at Death Valley. TBH, I'd rather see concerts return to LittleJohn over death Valley.
Funny story about Pink Floyd. Clemson Graduation commencment was the morning after. My brother graduated at 9:00am that morning. That side of campus was trashed after the PF concert and lots of people were passed out in cars and in random grassy spots. Really bad timing on that one.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I saw The Eagles at the Bi-Lo Center in Greenville.

Jan 25, 2022, 8:21 AM

The absolute best concert I have ever attended.

However, my chiropractor worked behind the stage at that concert. He said each one of the Eagles were extreme prima donnas. So, I asked him who was the best act he had the pleasure of meeting. To my surprise, he said Def Leppard. Said they were very nice and were really down to earth.

Remind me why Clemson no longer has concerts like pre 2000? Ordinance?

Putting on huge shows like that is a logistical nightmare.

It also destroys the field - they have covers that they put over them but it still causes damage.

Stadium tours are more done out of necessity for a very few amount of bands. They aren't designed for concerts so the sound generally sucks.

Major acts these days can "only" pull 20k or so tickets. Those shows are much better suited for a basketball arena.

Also, there isn't much financial incentive to come play a show in a college town. Why play in Clemson when you can play in Atl or Clt?

I think primarily because of Charlotte's football stadium opening in 1996

There were a lot of great stories from that concert. It was a ton of fun and you are absolutely right that there was a lot of weed, booze, and lack of moral judgement in DV that day. The Stones put on a good show for sure. They should bring someone like Garth and do it again. Saw him in Gainesville at the Swamp and it was similar but with a type of crowd.

Wife and I were up visiting friends in Seneca with no plans to go to concert. We were all watching tv when breaking news came on and they announced that extra tickets had come available due to the stage area not being as big as anticipated. We drove over to the stadium, got general admission tickets 4 rows back from the stage. And we stood up on those metal folding chairs the entire concert. Was very loud. My ears are still ringing

Loved the concert. Wife and I were in the lower part of the upper deck and had a great vantage point. Crowd was rocking, but not out of control. No issue in our section, save one young lady below us decided it would be a great idea to whip off her top. lol

I was at my girlfriend’s parents’ house on the lake, and her dad took us to the concert on his boat! He stayed on the boat during the show, listening to the Stones and watching the fireworks show, until we met him for our ride back. Great night!

I was too #### broke to get a ticket beforehand. Went and sat on the grass outside the stadium planning to just listen from there. As soon as the Stones started, the scalpers panicked and I got 2 tickets for $5.

Was a good time for sure.

Also saw Elton John and Billy Joel (The Piano Men) in Death Valley. I was on the 3rd row for that one. Billy Joel stole the show.

I was in the home stands around the 45 yard line 20 rows up. I saw them there and at Ga Tech. The GA Tech Steel Wheels had more ole school Rolling Stone songs. Thus that was my preference. However, bot we great as the Stones have such a strong repertoire.
Incidentally, this reminds me that Saban plays the Stones after every game. Anyhoo, I need more 13andRendfrow.
