Earliest memories? 1 from the 2nd grade, 1 from 1st grade:

May 5, 2022, 9:54 AM

1. When going through the lunch line in 2nd grade, you were only supposed to get one straw for your milk. Once, I tried to get away with getting two straws. I was so guilty about it, I guess I started walking funny and looking guilty and my teacher came over and asked why I was looking guilty. She Fing caught me.

2. Standing up and giving a report in 1st grade about what we did the previous summer, my report was on going to Edisto, and I described us "crab-fishing", and a girl in the class called me out and said it should be "crabbing". I was really embarrassed, and this girl was a real smarta$$ anyway, and ended up going to Augusta Prep for H.S. after the schools integrated, and to Smith College.

My whole life, my earliest memory has been a fuzzy feeling of being near water, hearing birds, and feeling a breeze while being in the shade....that's it...just feelings of those things at a moment in time.

In my 20's, going through old photos I found pictures of when I was a toddler (like 1-2 years old) and we lived in Mt Pleasant and my parents went to the beach and put me in a portable playpen on the beach with a sheet over the top to keep the sun out. It was exactly the feeling I remembered.

I'm claiming it as my earliest......I'd think it was a manufactured memory but they never talked about doing that and I never saw that picture until that point, so it's gotta be a memory I think.

Here's my next earliest memory

May 5, 2022, 10:05 AM

I dreamt I was as light as the ether- a floating spirit visiting things to come. The shades and shadows of the people in my life rassled their way their way into my slumber. I dreamed that Gale and Evelle had decided to return to prison. Probably that's just as well. I don't mean to sound superior, and they're a swell couple of guys, but maybe they weren't ready yet to come out into the world. And then I dreamed on, into the future, to a Christmas morn in the Arizona home where Nathan Junior was opening a present from a kindly couple who preferred to remain unknown. I saw Glen a few years later, still having no luck getting the cops to listen to his wild tales about me and Ed. Maybe he threw in one Polack joke too many. I don't know. And still I dreamed on, further into the future than I had ever dreamed before, watching Nathan Junior's progress from afar, taking pride in his accomplishments as if he were our own. Wondering if he ever thought of us and hoping that maybe we'd broadened his horizons a little even if he couldn't remember just how they got broadened. But still I hadn't dreamt nothing about me and Ed until the end. And this was cloudier cause it was years, years away. But I saw an old couple being visited by their children, and all their grandchildren too. The old couple weren't screwed up. And neither were their kids or their grandkids. And I don't know. You tell me. This whole dream, was it wishful thinking? Was I just fleeing reality like I know I'm liable to do? But me and Ed, we can be good too. And it seemed real. It seemed like us and it seemed like, well, our home. If not Arizona, then a land not too far away. Where all parents are strong and wise and capable and all children are happy and beloved. I don't know. Maybe it was Utah.

May 5, 2022, 9:58 AM

I can still remember kindergarten and the make-up of the classroom as well as a few classmates. I can remember the playground and some of the activities the teacher would do. I can even remember my daycare before that and that playground, even how I used to con the adults at naptime to get them to take me outside for another recess.

I remember stealing a stupid little army man figurine from kindergarten and feeling so guilty about it that I took it back the next day and didn't tell anyone.

Maybe my earliest is at my grandparents... they had a huge Collie that knocked me over one time and I freaked out. Just bawling and screaming. I was very small and young and can still remember her slamming into me (she wasn't attacking me but just got excited) and how scary it was. I feel like this was even before preschool days.

Japan serving on navy cruiser as an intelligence officer. We lived in a house with a wall out at the end of the front yard with a three foot drop to the sidewalk below. I think I remember we came home one day from pre-school and some douchenozzle had destroyed this tricycle/wagon toy that I had and it was in pieces at the bottom of the wall. Could be my memory someone else telling me, but still it stands out to me.

Probably 4 years old - JFK assassination and funeral.

May 5, 2022, 10:16 AM

Only 3 channels then and the funeral was on all 3. I was mad because I could not watch Superman that day. I also have a clear memory of riding a red rocking horse and being terrified when I heard a sonic boom, which was not that uncommon then, and may have been even earlier.

Not sure exactly how old I was, maybe 6 or 7

May 5, 2022, 10:24 AM

Playing with friends at the lake, jumping off the dock to see who could touch the bottom. We didn't know the bottom was 30'+ down. Jumped in 'like a pencil', got disoriented and thought I was going to drown. Somehow made it back to the surface, still scares the #### out of me.

Not sure how old I was, but I was young. 5 maybe. It was my birthday and I was having a joint party with another kid at one of those fun park deals with putt putt, bumper boats, etc. It was off Congaree Rd. if I recall, maybe someone will remember what that place was called. Anyway, my mom wanted me to wear a white pair of Keds shoes. I refused, for whatever reason I hated them. She forced them on me, I was pissed for weeks if not years. I was in high school before we were able to laugh about it.

Also, probably around kindergarten/1st grade. I had never been specifically told where my mom was from, just that she was "from the country". Teacher was going around the class asking where everyone was from, some first week of school activity. She ask where my mom is from, I say the country. She starts laughing and asks "oh, what country!" and laughs even harder. All of the other kids start laughing. I think that was the first time in my life I hated someone.

I was 3 and I was playing in the yard at my Grandma's house. I pick up a cigarette butt that was in the yard and put it in my mouth. My dad was watching me from the inside and tells me to put that nasty thing down.

I had a tricycle with a water gun

May 5, 2022, 10:29 AM

I guess I was 4, I remember driving it on our front porch.

Lots of mammories from kindergarten.

One time the teacher asked if everyone received a paper. I hid mine behind my back and said "I didn't get one". She went and looked for a long time and finally brought one over and I was like "TA-DA!". She did not think it was funny.

My earliest memory is of one of the moon walks.

May 5, 2022, 10:34 AM

No idea which one, I'd have been 2 1/2 in 1969 for the first and almost 6 in 1972 for the last.

I remember my father on the roof adjusting the antenna while my mother relayed the TV quality to him. I more remember how big of a deal it seemed for them, it seemed rather normal for me. Either I had no idea of the importance or no comprehension of what appeared on TV being real.

First grade, remembering our 3rd 1st grade teacher for that

May 5, 2022, 10:39 AM

year, in the second week of school.

We sent the first two home crying. The third stayed and her and my mom are still good friends.

Second grade I had the toughest teacher I've ever had in my life. I never thought I would get out of that grade. Also, my dad got me out of school early one day and took me to tail race canal because the shad were running. First time my dad used the "don't tell your mother" trick. Even though she was a teacher at the school and had to know.

I have three primary memories from Kindergarten/preschool

May 5, 2022, 10:51 AM

#1 - As ridiculous as it is, I vividly remember trying 'cheesy' crust pizza at my friends house for the first time

#2 - Around that time, I remember the passing of our wonderful dog. I came home one day after school and the hole that dad had dug in the backyard was filled and I couldn't find the dog

#3 - Pretending during nap time that I was sleeping no matter what until my crush would come to wake me up. I wouldn't budge for anything else

FIRST Grade, I had a beautiful girlfriend. I still remember her name, what she looked like and that she was part Cherokee. We sat together everyday.

Third grade was different. My first grade sweet heart had moved away and left me. And then one day the class was walking single file someplace, of courseI was right behind my teacher that day, and she spun around and shouted at me, I ought to slap you! Didn't understand why...I didn't grab or pinch her asss, but she accused me of mocking how she walked. Friends,I disagree. I don't think I did anything to warrant that behavior. That nut scared the daylights out of me.

I think I was in pre-kindergarten

May 5, 2022, 1:57 PM

I fell off the top of the slide and must have been pretty banged up. The school called the ambulance...I still vividly remember what the inside of that ambulance looked like.

I remember this time in Kindergarten I kissed this chick during nap time. Remember the build up to that.

I skipped first grade. I remember the conversation with my parents and the weirdness of walking into the 2nd grade room a few weeks into school...pretty weird.
