I was at the 1981 game against Wake Forest

Sep 4, 2020, 2:54 PM

My wife and I attended the game with her college roommate and her husband. He was a big Wake Forest fan and a graduate of the school. He had never been to a Clemson home game and wanted to see one in person. They suffered through the game and he told me that he didn't want to ever attend another game in Clemson. We used almost 100 football players that game and some said the water boys also played.

The Deacon Deacon mascot helped out late in the game!

And we could have scored 100 points.....

that day. I remember how Danny ran the most basic plays in the 2nd half to keep us from scoring.

I was at that game as well. Our running backs ran wild.

That was my Freshman year...

You may recall, up until the mid 70's the NCAA prohibited freshmen from playing. Consequently, most major universities had a freshman or junior-varsity team. Even after the NCAA appealed that rule, there was still a rule dictating the number of players that could dress for home games, so a lot of freshmen on scholarship watched the games from the stands. In the second half of the 81 Wake game, I recall the trainers and managers literally coming into the stands to tell some of the freshmen to go suit-up.
