Hit a nice five iron into the hole at #10 at Boscobel. Then my partner hit one about a half inch from the cup. Our opponents were waving white towels.

I don't play golf

Apr 7, 2022, 7:49 PM

but I will try to help you out. My brow was wrinkled as my sweaty palms gripped my shaft tightly. With a smooth pull back and a fast stroke I aimed my ball at the small hole......only hoping it would go in. Wait.....this doesn't sound like golf?

I’ve had four, but it’s the two that barely missed that I think about the most. One was at #12 at Pebble Beach and the other was at #4 at ANGC. I’d gladly trade those two for the four that did go in.

Marshall, my closest came at #17 at Pebble Beach. Hit a 4 iron, 170 yards to the flagstick, into a stiff wind and sun right in my eyers. The last thing I saw was my ball rising up right into the sun. Got to the green and my ball was resting 4" directly behind the cup. It had to have rolled right over the cup. I've played Pebble three times and birdied 17 twice. After my birdie I parred 18.

I had a camera with me, and somewhere in my house is a picture of me marking my ball on #12. The photo captured the pin, the ball mark and the ball a few inches from the hole. Just as memorable was the walk up #18 with a caddie.

I have played the game on and off since about 1974. In all

Apr 7, 2022, 8:32 PM

that time, back when I still had game, I hit the hole on Par 3's FOUR times. Butt, all four of those balls were evidently scared of the dark, because none of them went down the rabbit hole.

Nowadays, even hitting the GREEN on a par trey is unusual for Moi.That is, hopefully if the back corrects to the point I can ever even play that silly game again.

Ricochet off the trees behind the green at #13 at Southern Oaks

Apr 7, 2022, 8:40 PM

Just didn’t want to hit it in the water so I hit a 9 iron instead of a PW and hit it crisp. Hit the trees behind the green and was going to go back into the water if it didn’t bump into the stick and fall into the hole. Pure luck.

Number 9 at Maggie Valley, NC. Many years ago and was my first and only. Uphill shot and all you could see was the flag. I thought I hit it too far and when we got up to the green there were no balls on the green. I walked to the back of the green and my playing partner went to the hole and yelled that my ball was there. We were on a company outing so there was much celebrating that night! ????????

The tee shot on the next hole feels weird —

Apr 7, 2022, 9:07 PM

Almost like you skipped a hole

I have 7 but a 238 yard 5 wood for double eagle beats them all. Especially since it was first hole and quickly 3 under

Re: A hole in one...

Apr 7, 2022, 9:54 PM

In over 50 years of chasing the little white ball, I've been able to get 1 hole in one. In 2012 on hole #2 at the Links Course in Bloomington, IL using a 6 iron on a 178 yard par 3.

I had walked across the street to play a quick 9 and when I got to the 2nd hole I had to wait for a twosome. After they finished, they motioned me to play through and stood to the side of the green. I hit the shot at the flag but couldn't see it because of the elevated green. The next thing I know, they are jumping up and down and yelling it went it. They said it one hopped in the cup. The 3 of us ended up finishing the 9 together. Probably because they wanted the drinks at the end. ?? I still keep that ball in my golf bag (at least 2 bags removed).

Dog leg par 4. We were on the green and some dude crushed a drive over the trees. It landed about 10 feet in front of the green. We picked the ball up and put it in the cup.

Dude spent the rest of his life telling everyone how he made a hole in one on a par 4 hole...

True story...

Apr 8, 2022, 7:43 AM

Was playing with a buddy of mine at Myrtle Beach (can't remember which course, I've played so many). We were paired with a couple of strangers and arrived at a par 3 where there was a lady with several dozen golf balls on a table. She explained the deal to us - for $25, hit the green & win a sleeve of balls; hit within 10 feet & win a dozen; hole-in-one & win $10,000. My buddy was on the phone and didn't pay any attention to her. He gets up and hits, and you guessed it. One hop and into the cup. I told him about missing out on $10,000 and he said, "I always get in on that deal. I thought she was taking pictures."

I remind him of that every time we play.

I know a couple of A holes....

Have two, several *really* close

Apr 8, 2022, 8:33 AM

Got first hole in one on my 37th hole of golf I ever played. In grad school, some guys dragged me out a few times for nine holes at Woodhaven in Pendleton, and I just used their clubs. I bought a set of used clubs and was all ready for the next planned outing, but everyone cancelled, so I went by myself. This was like 4:00 on a Wed. afternoon, so no one else was around. Worm burner 5 iron rolled up the front of the green and disappeared. To my good fortune--playing alone and all--there was a guy who had finished and was drinking a beer on the deck who said "I think that went in." I was sure it went well over the back of the green and said so, but walked down there and sure enough it was in the cup. I don't know that guys name, but he got the pro-shop lady out as a witness for me I ran back to the deck and they both signed my scorecard. I've still got it in a little frame somewhere.

30 years later, I got another at Indian Hills, the club I use to belong to in Marietta, GA.

Almost got an ace on a short part 4 once. During drought in middle Georgia some 20 years ago, was playing at a friends club in Douglasville. Fairways like concrete due to drought. Short par 4 (315yds), and my drive hit hard and started rolling. Rolled up the front edge of greenside bunker ramping it up and over the bunker, landing on the green and hitting the flagstick. Sadly, it didn't drop in, but left a 6-inch tap in for eagle.

Also once got two eagles on the same 9 on the RTJ course in Opelika (like 2 weeks after the Barbasol event had been played there) holing out from fairway on two par 4s. Saw those same holes the next year on TV and joked "Heck I made eagle there..."

Not a hole in one story, but related> Many years ago, there

Apr 8, 2022, 8:39 AM

was a fund raiser tournament at a local club. They had a version of different prizes for hole in one on a particular par 3 hole. Sleeves of balls, etc. And, a big money prize for getting the elusive hole in one. (Nobody did.) But, the kicker which made it uniquely local, a former coworker of mine had a drop dead gorgeous daughter, who happened to be a high finisher in the Miss South Carolina pageant that year. She was on hand doing her part to raise money. Anyone who hit their ball "in the circle" on the green (IF they had paid their extra five bucks) got a kiss from her.

There was many an old man and a lot of younger ones emptied their wallets that day! I was just mad that I could not be one of them, her dad would not have let me get a pass, I don't think.

I was playing in a captains choice tournament...

Apr 8, 2022, 9:28 AM

at the old Anderson Country Club. The tournament sponsors had a hole in one contest to win a car. There was a line of players waiting on the tee box, and the group in front of us had a female playing partner. After the three guys in her foursome hit, she hits from the red tees and, you guessed it, she gets a hole in one. At least ten people witnessed it. Then the tournament sponsors tell her it didn't count since she hit from the red tees instead of the white.

Can only claim one Mulligan hole in one. Still chasing that elusive official first one.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I've had two...

Apr 8, 2022, 9:15 AM

My first was on the No. 12 Par 3 at Star Fort Country Club in Ninety Six. Way back then is played about 150 yards. The hole is slightly down hill so I hit an 8 iron. We were trying to get in a couple of extra holes before it got too dark. I knew I hit it good but it was too dark to see the green. When we couldn't find my ball, my playing partner look in the hole and there it was. No one in the group actually saw it go in including me.

My second was on the 130 yard No. 13 Par 3 (over water) at Southern Oaks in Easley. Hit a 9 iron a little long but it caught the slope and rolled down into the hole. Three playing partners witnessed that one.
