I get the feeling that a whole lot of our fans

Jan 1, 2022, 12:49 AM

we're not around during the Hatfield and West years. Now I'm sure many will take umbrage at that and say they have been watching Games since Frank Howard was on the sideline, and that's fine. The point is, many of us know what bad years actually are, and seeing all the doom and gloom here is just cringe worthy.

I was also around during the Ford years. I watched us rise to greatness and regress to mediocrity under Ford. Hatfield was pure mediocrity. West was bottom of the barrel. I have been at the top and rode it all the way down to the gutter. I prefer not to have a repeat.

Ford's teams were nowhere near mediocre. Prior to Swinney they were the pinnacle of Clemson football. It felt like we were poised for national titles at the end of the 80's.

Those years were very different at Clemson.

Jan 1, 2022, 12:55 AM

College football was very different then as well.

Any “doom and gloom” here is relative to our program and the world of college football today.

I was a young fan for the first Championship and a student for the end of Ford/beginning of Hatfield. The "fans" that are doom and gloom now are the sametype of folks that were sending letters with checks in them asking recruits to not come to Clemson. [And yes, I saw the letters as a member of Student Government.] West hire was to bring in a good old boy Danny clone and the hire was a bust. We have been blessed with an incredible run that hit a blip, I hope. Regardless, had a good time in Orlando and cheered for our team. Was not shocked to read several negative posts that took place during the game and afterwards, mostly by people who claim to be fans, but were not at the game (and likely attend very few). I suspect they also wear the colors proudly when we win, but contribute nothing to Clemson, my alma mater. Sad that our society has become more about complaining and whining when everything isn't going exactly like you want. Really wish these "fans" would hit the portal. Proud of my Tigers and looking forward to supporting them in 2022.

Heck, yeah, I grew up hearing tales from my daddy who played for the Tigers. I've been with the team forever. I will always support the team and players no matter the record. The Dabo years have been the surprise of a lifetime and I enjoy every season. 10-3 makes me very happy. Back to the playoffs will make me ecstatic.

back memories of struggles of offenses past. I think it was especially surprising given the performance on offense in the two games Trevor didn't play last year. Killer defense for sure! The tight games and offensive struggles are certainly something not seen in years. Certainly added to the number it times my heart beat this year! Hopefully we can stay healthy next year and work out some of the clunkiness in the offense. Looking forward to 2022!

I dont get why some of the older fans say this crap? just makes you seem super old. No.. i wasnt around for the Hatfield years as I was 4 at time time of his departure. my parents were around for the hatfield years. Im just not super old like some of the T-netters. we younger t-netters certainly arent going to stand by while the older ones go "well we used to be good.. but we arent as bad as once we were back when i was in school." not gonna happen.

The older ones are wise enough to know we’re not entitled to winning and all teams have bad years. So when Clemson has their bad year(s), the fools who scream in a panic that it’s falling apart make us look like amateurs. Buckle up and enjoy the ride and be grateful when Clemson wins it all. We’re entitled to nothing.

Very well said. I lived through Ford’s departure and what a shock to the system that was. Entitled is a great word as I believe that’s what most people have become. I would love to win the natty every year but I live in a place called “Realville” and know that’s just not reality.

Right now, I’d be happy if Alabama didn’t win every year and wish the top kids would realize they should go to other schools to keep competition up. The nerve of ESPN idiots claiming “Clemson fatigue” while Alabama has already given any sensible fan fatigue.

I saw Howard, Ingram, Parker, Pelosi and all the rest. Dabo has accomplished more than I thought possible but the NIL and the transfer portal have changed everything. The 2 teams playing for the Natty are major players for transfers and Clemson’s last 2 playoff losses were to transfer QBs. You will not be competitive at the national level unless you are successful in the transfer portal.

Jan 1, 2022, 9:18 AM [ in reply to Re: I get the feeling that a whole lot of our fans ]

I've been a fan since the Danny Ford era but don't lump me in with the "this is great compared to the teams under West" people.

This season also doesn't have me singing doom and gloom though I am a little uneasy. There will be a lot of unknowns for next year and that is true whether you are a fan or skeptic of the hires. Next year we will go into it without a proven DB or WR. The defense will need a new leader and the offense may or may not. If you are not concerned about next year, then you either don't care if it resembles a Bowden team or have such unwavering confidence in Dabo to think that it can't.

Having lived through the Tommy West years should make us even more fearful of going back. Nobody here wants the end of this era. For us older folks, we have seen the downfall of Nebraska, Southern Cal, and Miami. The younger generation has seen FSU.

I agree with Midlands Tiger, "I will not go easy into that good night." Go Tigers.

I was born the last year Frank Howard coached Clemson football.
I remember Charlie Pell as the coach I first saw on a Clemson sideline.
I remember Danny squatting and chewing grass under that Block C cap. I remember Hatfield coming in and tanking soon after. West never getting anything going. Bowden...ohhh Bowden.
Dabo sure has spoiled some of us , myself included. The expectations are completely different now for Clemson football...how can they not be after what has transpired since 2009?
We're expected at the top , a place has been set.
Saying that isn't even outrageous anymore. Not overconfident. Not arrogance.

I do enjoy the fact that so many are so loudly disappointed in a 10-3 season with a bowl victory .
Means we're aware of our potential greatness each and every spring.
Go Tigers !

As Tardog points out, Hatfield was not a bad coach, but he had the unenviable task of following Danny Ford. He was also a very religious man and wore it on his sleeve, and at the time that didn’t go over well. Then he lost to Virginia - I think we were something like 29-0 against them all-time until he came - and that was the final straw.

My freshman year was Red Parkers last so I’ve seen bad. I think we finished 3-6-2, and remember Duke tying us last play of the game on a field goal. At least that’s how remember it. We drank a lot in the student section in those days

Yeah following Ford was about impossible. Ford was loved at Clemson and still is. I’ve had the chance to meet him a few times and even sit beside him in church. He’s a great guy!
There’s 2 things that stand out in my mind about the Hatfield days. I remember Mrs Hatfield later telling the story about getting off the plane and meeting the first “fans”. She told her husband “we’ve made a big mistake”. I also remember member a fan saying in a very negative tone , “Hatfield cares more about the players souls than winning football games”. So, Hatfield never had a chance. By the way, I think Dabo also cares more about the players souls but he has enjoyed great support and that’s a good thing.

Hatfield was a decent coach but in all honestly won a lot of games with Ford’s players. What became obvious fairly quick was that he could not bring in really good ones to replace them.

program IMO lest the powers-that-be allow programs to remain or devolve into mediocrity.

Frankly, I believe that lack of fan passion is a major problem among a number of our conference members. Hence, the day Clemson folks adopt some of those ho-hum attitudes, we're going to be in big trouble.

Even nearing 75, I'll put my burning passions for Clemson and its programs, academically and athletically, up against anyone's. I like to win and win big. I despise losing. I revel in any Clemson success. It's been that way since my freshman year in 1965, and will remain so. And I like seeing my Tiger comrades willing to lend their voices right here on TigerNet...good, bad or ugly! Why? Because I know they care! Sometimes, we might not say it the way others wish, but at least we're willing to say it. And that, my good Friends, is a sure sign of a healthy program!

Washington, and many others over the years have strived for the consistency we now have yet have not been able to produce or reproduce it. They all have passionate, involved fanbases. They all have made shortsighted decisions based upon pressure from said fans, especially prominent boosters. Many are a complete mess.

We're not Alabama. Until Saban they were a mess for many years. Just like us before Dabo.

Let's not let fall into that trap because right now we're not Bama

Those of us that disagree with the way 2021 has gone for us are no more or less passionate than those of you who feel Dabo is a genius, can do no wrong and think everything is exactly on track. It's sad to say but I think we are going to see much of the same look this year that wqe saw last year. That's what happens when you promote from within and frankly what the boss wants to happen. What I can say is that if some of us say something negative about the team or something that you believers disagree with, it doesn't mean we are coots and it doesn't mean we don't love and support our school and football team. I can't tell you how many times I've heard the statement "I believe in what Dabo is doing, he's way smarter than me". Well he's not way smarter than most of us. He knows more about football than most of us but I can assure you there are a lot of very intelligent Clemson grads on this board. He's certainly no more of a Clemson man that any of us are, that's for sure. Point is, we all love Clemson and want the best for the team and school. We just disagree with what exactly is best for the team. Doesn't mean we have to fight about it.

Hatfield was Danny compared to Hootie Ingram and Red Parker. Like Tommy West later on, the Clemson job was just too big for either one of those. And, due to circumstances, Hatfield would have been hated no matter what. His dour personality made not liking him even easier.

Charlie Pell would correspond to Chad Morris. He took the first bus he could get out of town.

All that being said, if these things DO run in cycles, we should all feel BLESSED with the cycle we are in right now.
