Best 3 point shooter in Tiger BBall history?

Mar 19, 2018, 11:45 AM

I’m a young guy, so I didn’t start watching Clemson BBall until the Ed Scott/Larry Shyatt days. Was there anyone in the past that might’ve been better than DeVoe, Rivers or Oglesby?

Banks McFadden never missed a three point shot. Just wanted to point that out

Jordan and Bird wouldn't let Banks play in the famous game of horse either they said it wasn't fair. Banks even offered to kick his shots.

KC Rivers and Will Solomon come to mind in the recent era.

David Young from greenville was deadly

Mar 19, 2018, 11:53 AM

Otherwise I would say oglesby

I'd say Rivers or Andre Young...

Mar 19, 2018, 12:01 PM

i have a friend who was a manager when Andre Young was at clemson and in practice he would hit 17-18 out of 20 during drills and would be ticked about missing that many.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Young was very good too. He dipped a little his SR

Mar 19, 2018, 12:12 PM

year after Stitt and Grant left (likely due to defenses being able to focus more attention on him), but he was still 37.5% for his career and shot close to 40% his JR year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Sidy Djitte

Mar 19, 2018, 12:01 PM

shot 50% from 3 point range... not going to find anyone much better:

IMO KC Rivers was the best I've seen in my time watching

Mar 19, 2018, 12:08 PM

Clemson basketball (basically Rick Barnes era onward) though you could probably make a good case for Oglesby as well.

Solomon was 36.6% for his career which was quite a bit lower than Rivers (38.5%) and Oglesby (39.5%). Ed Scott had a good SR year shooting over 36%, but was only 31.3% for his career. Scott and Solomon were both high volume, inefficient offensive players - largely out of necessity because their supporting casts were garbage.

Devoe is only 34.6% for his career, but is having one of the better shooting seasons of any Clemson player i can remember sitting at 40% from 3 and an eFG% of 56.4%.

Re: IMO KC Rivers was the best I've seen in my time watching

Mar 19, 2018, 12:15 PM

Butch Zatazelo was a pretty good bomber before the days of three pointers

Jim Phillips gave the name “the blond bomber’ to a player who could/would shoot but I can’t remember the name,
maybe Bruce Martin but I’m not sure. Some of you older fans help me remember.

There have been several others. I remember a kid named Benedict who shot from downtown too.

I believe you maybe thinking of Van Gregg.

he could dribble and create his own shot and shot well.

Chris Whitney is the best that I can remember

Mar 19, 2018, 12:19 PM

He played in the early 90s. According to the stats I found, he only played the 91-92 and 92-93 seasons but show 41.3% from 3 pt. I remember him hitting some absolute bombs.

He was on some pretty good teams, too.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Anthony Jenkins was very good but the 3PT line was only

Mar 19, 2018, 12:36 PM

there for his SR year I believe. 45%+

Whitney and Tait were probably the best but the other 5-6 guys mentioned are up there also.

One thing to consider, I believe the line has been extended twice over the years. They are also talking about moving it again.(being tested in the NIT)

if I have to go with one, it's Chris Whitney

Mar 19, 2018, 12:50 PM

he was a JUCO transfer but started from Day 1 and could shoot or penetrate... what a point guard needed to be.
Vince Hamilton didn't have the 3 Pt shot in his era, but as a 2 guard, he was a career 50% FG shooter, and his range was definitely 3 Pt range. My only wish is that he could have had the 3 Pt line to really judge his proficiency. Billy Williams is another that didn't have the 3 Pt line but was a careet 50% shooter as a 2 guard.
With that in mind, I have to drop Michael Tait second to Chris Whitney.

Clemson has had some bombers come through but some didn't stay with the program: Michael Best, Michael Brown are two that I saw play but didn't balance student and athletic life...

Oglesby would be my pick also.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Oglesby had crazy range, Tait's got..

Mar 19, 2018, 1:29 PM

.. the % but was not a big scorer. I remember David Young could stroke it. Jurkunas had a great freshman streak with 3s but stank it up after that. For his size, McIntyre not only hit open 3s, but create some space and elevate when he got hot. Whitney was more of a point guard that could also hit the three ball. I gotta say on just the 3-point ball, Oglesby was the man.

Dave Thomas

Mar 19, 2018, 1:35 PM

They only counted 2 back then, but he did not miss from the corner. Lefty Drisell complained that he was shooting from out of bounds.
