I have been in several hurricanes and most were over hyped

Sep 13, 2018, 8:57 AM

BUT when that one Hugo comes around like it did in '89 it was under hyped. I would much prefer being over prepared than under because Hugo was a frightening night I thought would never end. Then when I saw the damage the next morning I never thought something like that could happen.

Same experience . Was kind of a low level PTSD going around the lowcountry for about a year after Hugo hit .
But then Primus released Frizzle Fry early in 1990 and there was a desperately warranted uprising in positive mentality .

Bingo! Until you have actually experienced a hurricane up close you have no understanding of the the power and scope involved. Television shows a fragment of the event and having been thru Hugo I don’t care to deal directly with another one.

I agree with Hugo being under hyped. I found out I had debris removal responsibilities for West Ashley, James Island and Johns Island the Monday after the storm went through. Not a fun year.

Hugo. What a nightmare.

Sep 13, 2018, 10:40 AM

Does anyone know why the water was so disgusting for weeks after Hugo?
Was it debris in the water system?
Was something introduced to the water to keep it potable?
I don’t know what the water was like elsewhere, but in Charleston it was awful.

Also, no one hypes Southern Cal in SC.

I was 8 when Hugo hit in ‘89, and will never forget those

Winds! In all honesty guys, stay safe. Hope everyone is prepared. Go Tigers!

Pine tree debris in the water system.

The water tasted awful for weeks.

Re: Hugo. What a nightmare. Drinking water was funky

Sep 14, 2018, 3:15 AM [ in reply to Hugo. What a nightmare. ]

Because Charleston got most of its water from the Edisto River. All of the pine trees that were knocked into the river gave the water its distinctive and nasty Pinesol taste. ??

Hugo memories are like PTSD! Was staying home in W Ashley until the late Charlie Hall started crying on TV about a 20’ storm surge! I was in my 2 story home and did the mental math: 10’ + 10’ = I don’t want to be here!

Left late right before storm hit to join the wife at Roper Hospital (their policy was “if you don’t stay, don’t come back as you’re fired!). Drove 280Z in the parking garage and no open space til I hit the top uncoverd floor. Figured there was a reason no cars there so went back down and found a space right close to the last floor turn. Rode Hugo out at Roper helping watch over the children of the employees. Freight train description doesn’t do justice to the sound of Hugo’s direct hit!

When I wen to leave the next day I was Po’d as a BMW had parked so close to me I couldn’t open my drivers door and had to crawl through the passenger side. I thought “jerk bummer driver” and then noticed all his drivers side glass was completely shattered - the wind had picked up all the pea gravel off the flat roofs and it was like a shotgun blast against his glass! The irony that he saved my glass was sweet enough to take a little of the Hugo edge off for a moment!
