Speaking of grilling

Jun 20, 2022, 11:07 AM

What do we think of lump charcoal versus briquets (but NOT Match Light)? Used some lump last night and was pleased with the food, but dayum that fire went out quickly.

MauldinT, where are you???

depends

on the grill and what you're cooking and how you're cooking it

Wouldn't bother with it personally unless...

you are using a kamado grill. You can always get better quality briquets for a normal grill.

I have the rest of the bag to use up, so

probably will get some quality briquets and do a mix so that I can get the fire to last a little longer.

that's what I typically do

with my offset. I'll get a bed of coals going with briquets, then stack the lump stuff on top of that. Then get the logs on top of those. Keep adding logs and/or lump coal as needed.

I've also found, if you're using pure lump stuff, it pays to light with one of those electric thingies the guys use for BGE's or KJ's (kamodo style smokers).

I use a small propane torch

Jun 20, 2022, 1:35 PM

it works great for getting a fire going

Way better than the little starter squares that BGE and others sell

Some variation of this is the way

Lump burns hotter and faster than briquettes.

Jun 20, 2022, 1:18 PM

Lump is great for grilling, but less so for smoking or other long cooks.

The quality can really vary, too. I've heard lots of reports of people finding nails, rocks, pieces of flooring, etc. in bags of Royal Oak lump charcoal. Jealous Devil is the best I've seen, although it's pricey.

FOGO and JD are my go to lump brands

Jun 20, 2022, 1:33 PM

you are 100% accurate that they are pricier, but seems worth it to me

Was doing some reading

Jun 20, 2022, 1:44 PM [ in reply to Lump burns hotter and faster than briquettes. ]

Many of the lump manufacturers have contracts set up with flooring companies, cabinet makers, etc to take their leftovers from the manufacturing process, so I guess it is not surprising to find a nail, or a piece that looks like a 1x3, etc.
