Bring back the sit out 1 year transfer rule to stop “NIL” transfers

May 20, 2022, 4:38 PM

What do y’all think about bringing back the sit out one year transfer rule? I think it would fix alot of issues in college football. Star players would be way less likely to transfer for “NIL” if they had to sit out one year. You would likely only see transfers after someone balled out their freshman hear (Doesn’t happen that much). Most players being targeted for poaching older than freshman would want to go pro after their junior year and would declime transferring for “NIL”

Why do you hate capitalism?

College football programs are people and the ones that sell the most Jersies will win the most games. If I were Graham Neff, I would be focusing more of my attention on the sports apparel market and less on directing our athletic programs, the rest will take care of itself.

Re: Bring back the sit out 1 year transfer rule to stop “NIL” transfers

May 20, 2022, 5:35 PM

Nah, SCOTUS will not allow one scholarship student to be prevented from transferring to another college as or when she/he sees fit, but to not allow that same privilege to a scholarship student athlete.

What's the word for that practice ? ... oh yeah, that's it ... discrimination.

The NIL represents freedom of opportunity.

Discrimination, with the example that scholarship students are allowed to work in any legal job outside of school while still enrolled as a student ... but that same practice was denied to scholarship students athletes; they were not allowed to work in any legal job outside of school while still enrolled as a student.

SCOTUS said 'no dice' to the first example of discrimination ... enter Portal.

SCOTUS said 'nein, nyet' to the 2nd example of discrimiation ... enter NIL.

(???) What's going to happen when the first high profile FB or BB player with a big NIL deal doesn't play well, and his NIL deal doesn't pay out?

That, ladies and gentlemen, is when the NIL deals will really start to get interesting.

Let’em transfer all they want, just make’m wait to play ball

May 20, 2022, 5:42 PM

There has to be some sort of disincentive to transferring on a whim. Move on if you want to but there needs to be something to govern overly emotional or purely pecuniary decisions.

And yes, it wouldn’t bother me a bit if some sort of disincentive were placed on coaches jumping ship as well.

Just like the pretty common non-compete clauses built into many employee contracts ...

+1 for using pecuniary. Everytime the NCAA didn't give a transfer waiver for immediate eligibility and tried to make a player sit a year, they were sued and taken to court. I don't think they ran out of money, they probably didn't have enough attorney's and chose the easy way out. Now they are stuck with it.

Not a lawyer, so I'm just fishing here ...

If NCAA FB / BB scholarships in which more than just the value of the scholarship were in play (i.e., including but not limited to NIL money), and if this 'additional value' exceeded that of what a regular college scholarship student were eligible to receive, then could a contract be executed between each scholarship athlete and the university which is sponsoring the NIL?

Said contract would have binding 'non-compete' clauses and duration of for however long the NIL deal happens to be.

2 year NIL deal ... the player is 'under contract' for 2 consecutive 12 month periods, and the college must assure that the NIL deal is paid for the entire 2 year period (even if the player stinks and/or flunks out of school).

1 year NIL deal ... player is under contract for 1 year; cannot get out of contract for a 12 month period. School is responsible for full payment of the NIL even if the player flunks out / goes to jail the day after the contract (and NIL deal) is signed.

Best Is The Standard

Re: Bingo*** And, this!

May 21, 2022, 12:40 AM

Sit out a year!
If player X gets a NIL deal and leaves the school "whose name, image and likeness" were used to gain them notoriety: then player X pays back a portion of the scholarship.
If player X wants to leave school and start working in a Take 5 oil changing place; they do not have to pay it back. Why? Because that school isn't a potential opponent of Take 5.
Not giving one school a built-in advantage "other than one school is able to attract better football players to their school because of outstanding academics and campus life was "loosely what the NCAA was supposed to be doing"! Some of the transfer portal players; in my mind could have just as easily(cheaper too) been paid off to "leave school" in order to make the opponents roster weaker! You are naive if you don't think that's happening.
Whatever the case - curve it! Discourage it! Make it harder!

Somebody said, do we want to teach them all of those pro-sports-type things. My thing with that question is: "are you not looking at what is going on already with it with no intervention"? They are already operating in a loosely organized way! The players have all the power! They know it! They are already exploiting it! This is why all the suggestions on this and many other threads are being made on how it can be brought under control. We never had to teach them this; they have social media!

Ok, but with that comes

May 20, 2022, 10:11 PM [ in reply to Re: Bring back the sit out 1 year transfer rule to stop “NIL” transfers ]

Salary caps, draft, player unions, etc.
Is that what we should be teaching 18 year olds? I think not
And teaching them that their NAME, their LOOKS, and their LIKENESS ( whatever that is) are the most important things in having a successful career is sick.
Can’t give in to this very terrible oversight by the NCAA.

here here!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Transfer - yes. Play - no

May 20, 2022, 9:47 PM

It might be discrimination to hold someone where they do not want to be; "for whatever the reason"! But, if the NCAA wants to have some semblance of making a even playing field, they must do something.

I like the ability to not allow immediate satisfaction and immediate help to X-school with more money. Transfers in the middle of the season must sit out a full calendar year! Quit on your school in November, you can't play at your new school until no earlier that 365 days later!

If the other boosters/alums/NIL factions are willing to wait - so be it! But, everybody want "instant gratification"!
The ungrateful attitude of a student-athlete to the school that obviously took good enough care of them; so that a bigger funded school stepped in has to be curved.

Or my thing all along has been: "make it so you can transfer immediately after the National Championship Game is played until the end of your schools spring semester only"! No exceptions! Deal with it until "THE PORTAL" opens! Otherwise it's closed. It's sickening to see it during the season.

Re: Bring back the sit out 1 year transfer rule to stop “NIL” transfers

This one should be a no-brainer…

Absolutely the student athlete can transfer just like any other student can. HOWEVER, this does not mean that he or she should be able to *play* immediately.

The justification is academics, plain and simple. These are supposed to be students and if they are just transferring for NIL money (or playing time) this could seriously disrupt their academics.

The transition when transferring is challenging for many students. Giving the athletes a year to make that transition academically is actually doing right by them. Schools have an obligation to look after the students’ education and that includes schools’ athletics programs.

Again, this one should be an absolute no-brainer.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I was okay with the transfer and not sitting

May 20, 2022, 11:22 PM

out a year UNTIL the NIL came along. Those 2 together are not a good thing. With the situation we have now the transfer rule needs to go back to sitting out a year and NIL needs adjustments along with that.

May 21, 2022, 2:51 PM

a graduate, but everyone else should have to sit a year after a transfer. That's best for the game and the students also. Buyer's remorse on the former and you've accomplished the primary goal on the latter and should be free to move about the country at will from there. There's JUCO and lesser divisions for the tweeners. No one is restricting transfers or destinations at any point - just eligibility to play for that first season over, which should also be eligible for a redshirt designation if available.

Or 4 year contracts both ways. NFL players cannot bounce from team to team if they are second string. Create a cap and everything, but in the contract it must say if you flunk out it is null and void.
