TBH, just numbers can be deceiving (y’know, liars figure and figures lie). So many other variables at play - Duggan’s tendency to scramble/run, WR production, talent or ability of TE’s, etc.

Lastly, TCU’s got nobody as good as that Briny guy…. ?

didn't use the TE, which wasn't the case.

A coach can say they value the TE, how important it is to a successful, multiple offense and then not use them?

To your point, Chad Morris could have Sammy Watkins, Nuk Hopkins, Jarod Brown[all NFLers] & Dwayne Allen can still win the Mackey Award.

More importantly, people can say all they want, but that doesn't make any of it true, it happens here a lot, which is why sometimes just giving the news is far better than editorializing it.

Oh, and happy Thursday Uncle Bill®.

Riley doesn't use the TE as much or that our TE's are more talented. Riley will use our talented group to his advantage and open up the running. IDK, we'll see. Just my thoughts.

Re: Tight End, 2022...

Our TE's were better weapons than our WR's last year so that is where the ball went. Pretty sure if you ran a WR comparison between the two teams, TCU smoked our WR production. Hopefully a new scheme will allow our WR's to have dramatically better production, mix in Bringingstool running seams up the middle. I like our chances next year of seeing offensive production explode.

Greater impact/change is with the QB, Cade much better...

at throwing WRs open.

Cade's 50 completions in the UNC & Tennessee games included Clemson's first 100 yard receiving game in what seems like a decade. Ngata looked like the possession receiver he was intended to be, the ball was coming out timely. It was fun to see.

More likely, you use the TE as a matter of course, as with Chad Morris and Dwayne Allen winning the Mackey, or you don't. Other than that it's lip service.

Offensive production

Feb 2, 2023, 9:18 AM

2022

Clemson

5788 yards this season
33 points per game

TCU

6825 yards this season
38.9 points per game

Re: Offensive production

3

Feb 2, 2023, 9:31 AM

80 more yards a game and 6 more points.

With more production from WRs, the TE production could drop. I prefer the TE inside the red zone.

Now if the RBs jump out and start getting 100 yards a quarter…..guess what?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Great numbers to finish 27th in Total Offense? Maybe...

if TCU had used the Tight End more, Kansas State might not have lifted the trophy?

Coach Swinney is the best to ever do it at Clemson, Oh Captain, my Captain always until he's not, including and not limited to hiring Garrett Riley. OP was a check of expectations here as a lot of things are being bandied about with little background in support.

3

Feb 2, 2023, 10:09 AM

CBS, the same thrill I now have for the opportunity Coach Riley now holds.

I'm almost always serious, even though the way I wrap it might not be palatable, pleasing, inviting or as obvious to all as it is to me. The fun is in the winning, but it's sports, not life. I'm anxiously looking forward to Coach Riley putting his stamp on things. It'll be great theatre.

He's a Clemson Tiger, nothing better.

TCU did not have a TE of Davis Allen's quality...don't know how many do! Every post season team doing well knows how to use TE`s...I still don't think we used DA as much as we should...KC knows what to do with a TE and theirs might be as good as DA...only time will tell! Kelce makes Mahomes look like an all pro...they read each other's mind! Mahomes learned his craft from a great offensive mind!

Both TE's for TCU were transfers after 3 years with their

2

Feb 2, 2023, 10:48 AM

prior teams. Spivey had 17 total catches for 162 yards and no TDs in his first three years at Miss State. He had only 3 catches his 3rd year. He caught 11 passes for 136 yards and a TD in 1 year with TCU.

Wiley had 24 catches for 245 yards and 4 TDs in 1 year at TCU. That was after catching 19 passes for 248 yards and 3 TDs in 3 years at Texas. He was 5th on the team in catches and yards this past season at TCU.

Both players in one year at TCU basically matched their 3 year totals with their prior teams. If they couldn't get any playing time in their first three years with Texas and Miss. State and decided to transfer(Jaylen Lay?) to a lower profile program, perhaps they just weren't that good, but Riley was able to maximize their potential.

At SMU in his first year, his TE was his second leading receiver with 35 catches for 536 yards and 5 TDs(Allen had 39/443/5 this year). His TEs caught 45 balls that year. In his second year, his TE was his 4th leading receiver with 38 catches for 465 yards and 4 TDs. His TEs caught 51 balls that year.

My guess is only one of his tight ends(Kylen Granson Riley's 2nd leading receiver with 35/536/5 Riley's 1st year at SMU) the last 3 years at SMU and TCU were nearly as talented as the two NFL tight ends we had last year.

A good coordinator should recognize the strengths and weaknesses of his team and players and utilize/maximize the strengths and not force feed the weaknesses.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agree with much of that and far more involved...

Feb 2, 2023, 11:07 AM

than most of the tripe spatted here - far too many leaps with no justification, ground work, basis.

Allen was not highly recruited, more in line with Wiley's status out of high school, while Spivey was held relatively higher on the national scene, similar skill set to Lazy Leggett as he's played on the outside as well. As for Briningstool, he still needs to develop physically, has some growing to do to hold up to the bulk of the work.

It's very seldom one thing or the other, more likely a myriad of things including the QB, and oft times heavily reliant of the opposing defenses ability/inability to limit an aspect of the offense.
